Q:

Hi all.

Dear arena net team i was wondering since this game has such huge open world fights will arena net support amd mantle tech in the future updates of the client?. I ask this because of all the tech demos i have seen shows mantle to be very effective when there are many models on the screen simultaneously. By the benchmarks shown it is 40 45 percent faster than dx 9, 11 and has a less overhead than the latter.

its most beneficial in cpu limited applications. Guild Wars 2 is most notably CPU intensive and would seems a likely candidate to benefit. Currently they are looking to help developers interested in using Mantle technology making the present a good time to get involve if they are willing to offer assistance. They plan on announcing an initiative to work with nvidia/intel to bring support to their graphics architectures so their new API will have a shot at competing with dx. Meaning, time invested in early adoption would not be to the exclusion of nvidia card owners and would benefit all your players hitting a cpu bottleneck and opening the door to players with lower end computers. As much magic as they pull of with dx9, the game needs an api upgrade of some sort soon if it can net them large fps gains in the process why not go that path.

Considering how “dated” the engine was even at release (no DX 11, no 64-bit optimization, poor multi-core support) I doubt GW2 is really much of a Mantle candidate.

I feel like GW2 was programmed for PCs in 2009, except it didn’t come out until 2012.

overhauls aren’t simple but they happen all the time and often become inevitable. I’m not saying “do it now or ill be anrgy” but there are a lot pros to starting soon. Even if they feel its best to wait though a time will come where they will have to start thinking about it and mantle offers an interesting advantage for wvw where the performance gains are most dramatic (48%) in scenarios with lots of on screen characters (40+) while still delivering a significant 15% improvement in single player like content. This is with first release of mantle, very beta mantle drivers, and dices first mantle patch. Given maturation this could be big for WvW where players struggle the most allowing one of the games best elements to really shine. Its at least worth considering. XP is finally starting to fall off after all these years in user numbers and its actually happening pretty fast. Dx11 or Mantle. I’ll be happy, but as of now it (seemingly) undecided, i cast my vote for mantle and if enough others do so as well maybe they will consider it.

I would assume that this will never see the light of day at all, they can barely work up the stuff to produce a competent living story update let alone find the people required to patch the game for mantle. This would be something I would be expecting to see released in an expansion along with alot of other additions to the game but we all know that an expansion in not in the current foreseeable future for GW2.

Guild Wars 2 was originally supposed to come out in 2008, so yeah, that explains it.

I don’t see it happening OP and I explain why. Anything this year has taught us the GW2 development team is not good at multitasking. They ended up doing away with there dungeon design team to put them on living story.

They have ignored major game breaking bugs since the release of the game (Half the temple events in Orr are unplayable).

The Apple client has been in beta since the game released with no true support in sight.

The game (windows) client and the server’s them self’s are in dire need of optimization. Great examples are Lions Arch on one of the 3 populated servers. On average it takes 1-5mins to login to Lions Arch. WvW any medium-large zerg not only causes frame rate spikes but also skill lag showing the server cant keep up with the calculations.

There is also the fact recently (last 6months) they seem to be more focused on bringing items to the GEM store then the game its self.

Before I forget the game is in dire need of balancing and AI tweaking. The way the game plays right now there is only one type of viable player DPS. Any other roll is a hindrance to the team and holds them back. Please dont take me as a elitist when I say that. My stance is bring what you want play as you like. Personally I have a Mesmer and Necromancer I occasionally run dungeons with. I just understand when I do run with them vs my warrior I am holding back the team some what.

Another nail in the Mantel coffin is that it only works with newer Radeon hardware. Chances are there not going to spend valuable resources and time to program for something that maybe 5-10% of the player base will be able to use when they could be spending that time on Living story or Cash Shop.

I have just tested bf4 with mantle and kitten just kitten i have a 20 percent increase over dx11.

Dear arena net again i would really liked if some from the net tech team could respond to this topic because this is the perfect time to update the api for gw2 because amd is pushing this thing hard. I v read somewhere that amd paid 8 million to ea to push this tech and as a fastest selling western rpg in history i would believe that amd would love to jump to this. I mean c mon even wow has a dx11 path.

this is exactly why I think choosing mantle makes a lot of sense because amd may be able to help provide the resources necessary for Anet to pull off an api overhaul that they might otherwise have wait years for if they choose directx. With AMDs grip on the console market and their plan to leverage mantle to maximize performance on said consoles as well as PCs it will make sense for Nvidia to embrace whatever performance gains the API may offer for their own hardware with the hundreds of next gen console ports that will support it so they won’t find themselves having to compensate for the over head by offering 20% more horse power at the same price point only just to net the same real world results on PC’s and Steambox utilizing their hardware. With AMDs expressing a plan to approach NVIDIA along with Intel and others and declaring a willingness to let mantle take whatever shape it needs (including a mutually reagreed upon name) to get the hardware support necessary to give it a winning shot at taking on dx I see this as a really good chance to gain buzz for the game, ensure its longevity, spark new interest, bring in new players and back old ones. I see this as part of an expansion/major update down the road sort of thing if it were to happen but I don’t think it would hurt if ArenaNet at least approached them and said “so we keep hearing about this mantle”

Since they hadn’t done a Dx11 port, a Mantle port is like expecting NASA to announce their next project is building a FTL Starship when all then have are the same old chemical fueled rockets we’ve had since WWII.

The whole renderer would need to be scrapped and rebuilt for multiple core scaling and Dx11 before they take on Mantle. Mantle is probably more straightforward to do with a Dx11 engine than the restrictive nature of a Dx9 renderer.

So until we see or hear about a major rewrite of the core tech in the game, don’t hold your breath. It takes a major effort in time and experienced manpower to replace the guts of a game while leaving the assets and other functionality intact.

Like i said. I figure discussion of it now might lead to something several years down the road but i have no delusions of them revamping the game any time soon.
