I really hope so. I really do. From my perspective, there is always more community hype over expansions over stuff like underwhelming feature packs and tidbits of fan-fiction-style living story chapters. Gaming websites would have something more fun to advertise and dote over while the players both new and old will have something to go crazy over. All the extra attention from an expansion likely means more long-term profit for GW2 than relying on the gem store cash grab philosophy.

Did GW2 put out enough content to match all of the GW1 games together? I’ve heard that it has, but those games are in the past now and technology has advanced so we shouldn’t be comparing how much content this game has with games that came out a while ago imo. They should be able to produce an expansion by now.

I’d love to see the vast cities of Cantha or the amazing expanse of Elona! Tyria has always seemed so plain to me even in GW1 and I think it’s about time for a change of scenery, and not by unlocking small maps fractions at a time. These are my opinions on the matter.

Golden shackles are still golden.

I hope there is an expansion. If I hear the word expansion from Anet I will have 3x the fun in GW2 pre-expansion, purely from the hype for the upcoming expansion. This is why this kind of thing is important in MMOs. Even if it is not an expansion there have been hints towards new types of content, the kind people have been asking for, so I think it’s safe to say this game will finally get some big updates at least.

I’m only here because sometimes I just like to watch things burn.

Cantha and Elona are both rich with lore, either continent would be a joy to explore. I tend to favor Elona as I found the main storyline inspiring.

A traditional expansion would net ArenaNet major dividends. Based on what I’ve been reading on Glassdoor.com I’m not sure they currently have the manpower for such an endeavour; however, between Anet and NCSoft there’s more than enough free flowing cash to make it happen. The reasons for undertaking an expansion would far outweigh the cons.

Excellent point. Even if the expansion doesn’t hit until Fall 2015, players will return just to familiarize themselves with the world, or wrap-up past achievements. See? We’re not asking for something tomorrow, we’ll wait for something good (if there’s something worth waiting for).

I just really hope that an expansion has been in the works for awhile now. Hopefully something in the first half of 2015.
I think I may be in the minority because I would rather see Elona before we see Cantha.
We can only hope that Colin isn’t in charge of what is in an expansion. We know that won’t amount to much.

The Living Story has the feeling of supplemental content. RIFT made bi-weekly releases popular, but they have continued to develop expansions. In fact they have a new expansion releasing soon. Three new zones, six dungeons, mounts and skills.

In theory an expansion would contain a new class, new skills, dungeons, a new continent to explore, quests, and QoL improvements. The current iteration of the Living Story is one large quest broken up into bite-size chunks.

FWIW there is no actual talk of raiding content being produced. It’s only speculation by some people based on a job listing for anet.

And the job listing may not even be for GW2 for all we know.

An expansion into Elona would be a great way to show off a new Elder Dragon and new areas and lands. First into the Crystal Desert where Kralkatorrik is then onto Elona fighting Palawa Joko and his armies.

Even going to Cantha they could introduce the “deep sea dragon” and make the whole story be about it. When you heard the past story of Destiny’s Edge Caithe says the fought dragon minions in the Jade Sea.

Kill stuff to unlock weapons skills, most confusing thing I ever heard of. (sarcasm)

I would hope for an expansion to Elona. We do have much more reason to go there, and in lore it states Order of whispers has been helping smuggle people out of there for a while. That and having Kralky sitting right on top of it, a horde of neat and dry undead, as opposed to the soggy kind. Djinn, could even be a possible race for Elona, or possibly even heket.

Judeing from the last part of LS I think we will be going to the Crystal desert and perhaps we will need to become ascended before fighting old bramble bones.

You mean those investor meetings that were talking about a 2010 release for GW2 and an “expansion to come in late 2013”? I don’t trust anything GW2-related that comes out of NCSoft, they’ve been proven false so many times in the past that they are not a reliable source of information.

Also, no to Elona or Cantha, there are still too many areas of Tyria (continent) yet to be explored.

I think an expansion would be a fantastic idea at this point. Although people seem to believe the living story generates as much content… It doesn’t. Yes, It is free which is nice and gives quite a bit considering! But It lacks many things that a real expansion offers, new classes, races, weapon types for different classes and so on. I do like the living story, however now would be the ideal time for an expansion.

The main reason they should make an expansion is for the hype, as mentioned many times the Living World doesn’t offer much hype outside of the GW2 Community. Expansions are a great way to show newer people “Hey! We’re releasing more content, come join in!”. Still, If they decide not to do one… Doesn’t matter to me, the game is free after all.

Anything to put some lasting content in to keep us busy long enough for another shipment is an A+ imo. This weak bi weekly updating system just isn’t working even if the formula seemed promising, there just isn’t enough you can add in 2 months (4 teams for LS I believe, each taking turns). Good content needs good dev’s and time, I can only hope they turn some of their efforts towards a larger update that justifies the time spent on it.

LS team wouldn’t be bad to keep around but it definitely shouldn’t’ be the only team releasing pve content, have them shake up the story while we play in it kind of like letting the player base decide a certain route in various parts of the story so people really never know what to expect, but have a bigger team for the expansions. Even if they require a small fee, I think if the content was good enough it would more than likely bring people back after seeing a change being made to the game’s formula. Also would help revenue so that they can keep the effort going strong.

Concidering how long it took for the game to be developed, I think an expansion is a quite some time away. Unless they have been working on it already for a couple of years.

If the person being employed for raids is going to be contributing to an expansion, and or new content, they will have to spend time getting upto speed before any Dev work is undertaken.

It’s really good to see that end game is the next thing on the agenda but don’t expect quality work to appear over night.

As raids would be a significant change to the existing content, they are going to want to get it right from day one.

People that disagree that Living story gives anything like what they expect from an expansion.

If you look at what that segment of the player-base says they want from an expansion, you will see “Living Story” does Not meet this need.

Someone labeled it " Fan fiction" That is bad. Anytime the writing of a professional company that owns the franchise is compared to " fan fiction"… you have to question if the Company is actually meeting the needs of it’s player base.

We as a whole have gotten used to a certain cycle. Expansions 18 months to 2 years post launch is part of it.

NOT hearing about any expansion plans… leaves many players a Bit…restless. And if Anet cannot help, their eyes wander.

Asa their eyes wander, Anet faces losing players to competing MMO’s. That leads to a lower player base.

Maybe they come back, maybe they don’t. And before anyone says that " Oh, they will be back." Some might, but even World of Warcraft Bleeds players.

Anet needs to realize it is not immune. It will lose players. Then the only question is, can it interest new players fast enough to make up for the older players it loses that are getting restless for something new.

I think that expansions with living world updates to keep the game fresh between two expansions is the way to go for Guild Wars 2. The expansions would bring a lot of nice stuff to the game that would otherwise be gem store only, and while it is not related to content it would also bring back a lot of the buzz the game has lost and hopefully make the game exciting again.

How I see the Living World mesh with the expansion’s story content is that the expansion would unleash a whole new continent and in the expansion story you work with the b/iconics and other important people towards establishing a strong presence on that continent, with bases, towns, etc. Then the living world kicks in a little bit later while you go after the main villain with the biconics.

Hoping for a 2015 release based on what NcSoft says is like hoping Santa Claus brings us faithful GW vets Alienware rigs for X-Mas. It’s anyone guess outside of Anet what they plan to do, and they do not share information freely. They will open the table for discussions (CDI threads) but beyond that it’s pure speculation. It’s better we hope Anet decides to even begin thinking about an expansion right now, at least that signifies a possible change in direction.

An expansion would be nice but from what I’ve seen so far and what I’ve seen people from Anet say.. My guess would be Anet will plan to open up more of the game world through living story similar to how Dry Top was done but I think many can agree on one thing, if Anet wants to keep the majority of players happy they might want to consider adding a bit more.

Dry Top wasn’t bad but that’s just going to be part of an already existing area, simply more of it opened up. From what I’ve seen, I think many people would like to see new continents opened up. This could work through living story if Anet simply just does it. Anet also needs to realize that the market for MMOs gets more competitive every year and Anet really is going to have to step it up if they want to have GW2 as a top MMO over the next few years and not lose a ton of players to other MMOs releasing over the next couple of years.

The thing is, maps are not all that an expansion sells. There is also the idea of increased functionality. More races, more professions, more weapons, more skills.

None of this is addressed in “Living Story”.

Not saying for most, as I can only speak for myself. But It seems to me there are many players that expect similar content from an expansion.

In the minds of the developers..“Living Story” is " expansion-like"

In my mind, it’s expansion -lite.

You go toa fancy dinner, you expect dinner. You may get cheese On a cracker as an apperitif. But that is Understood to “Hold you till dinner is ready to be served.”

For me… an actual expansion, is dinner, I am waiting to be served. it seems that for Anet, cheese on a cracker is enough. For me it’s Not. And I am sure there are many like me, that at the moment, since Anet is making no announcements, about an expansion, are looking around to see what else is available.

I wanted to give my money to Anet for an expansion. I am sure that this is just an occasion where the devs over-estimated the reception of “Living Story” and dropped the ball. Many players that wanted to give $50 or $60 to Anet, may be giving their money to someone else.

Anet dropped the ball here, and Lost out.
