Q:

The reason I am posting this thread is not out of anger, but out of being seriously concerned.

The title here says it all. I have almost never posted in the forums, as I try to give the developers the benefit of the doubt. I have been playing GW2 since launch, still actively play GW1, and am incredibly active within GW2 currently.

Since Heart of Thorns launched, Guild Wars 2 has been a mess. Unwarranted unending game and client crashes, Falsified Network Errors, Fumbles by the maintenance team in which the game just stops operating to thousands of people…the list goes on and on.

I keep up with the latest news and happenings in GW2, so I downloaded the 64 bit client the day it was relased, and like most of my guildies and so many other people in the game, not much changed. I still began having game crashes, error codes, and network errors. Im currently running an amazing gameing setup (comp and dual monitors with nvidia chipsets), I have great network connectivity and am hardlined in… In other words, I know these errors are not on my end.

I am thankful, however, that the maintenance and tech team is releasing patch notes consistently, and I understand that they are probably swamped over their heads. Aside from that fact, I think both myself, and much of the GW2 community needs to hear some real stuff coming from the tech/maintenance staff on what the heck has happened to GW2 since HoT launch.

I am currently typing this because we just had a major game crash, that was cross servers, and left many people, including me, without the ability to play. Currently I am back in game but guild chat is not working, and the trading post is “down for maintenance.”

Here’s my point: Is there any way that the Arenanet team can let us know in advance when some sort of maintenance will be performed? I know I am not alone when Im experiencing sudden in game crashes due to maintenance that was unannounced. This can be very frustrating to the community and can cause unwarranted results from players.

I propose a couple quick and simple solutions: adding advance warnings to the gw2wiki page/forum’s/ or couple hour advanced worldwide in game notification when unsheduled/scheduled maintenance will be happening.

Anyway, I hope this helps in some way, and hope to see things getting smoother in game soon! Thanks for all your hard work at Arenanet, and I still love this game!

Since he said this was the point of his post, maybe this is his question.

I’m not sure emergency or non-scheduled maintenance can be announced ahead of time.

I’m not sure that when the servers have issues, it is maintenance-based.

Except, of course, when said maintenance is announced beforehand.

Main OP post not question. Just use question tag for attention to post. That my point. Abuse of question tag feature to get attention.

I wonder if that same server-wide issue was also why I couldn’t log into the forums. Anyone else have trouble about an hour ago?

Yes. Pretty much everyone. The servers were down and the forums also.

All the people that posted about it, I’m sure. You can find other threads about it, here, and in the Support Sub-forums. The servers were down; the Devs posted about it on Twitter; (I’m guessing because the forums were down for many, as well).

Good luck.

I was busy packing boxes so I wasn’t too fussed. Only just sat down now for a break.

Ok. OP. As to your question

Read the announcement forum. Server maintenance scheduled 23 November

Gaile Gray
ArenaNet Forum Communications Team Lead

We will be undertaking server maintenance this evening (Pacific time). We do not anticipate that there will be major issues, although a few players may experience intermittent disruption to chat, whispers, or to the guild or party system. Transactions and interactions with the Black Lion Trading Company and our purchasing portal (Buy.GuildWars2.com) may be a bit slower but all transactions will process during the maintenance or immediately following its conclusion.
The times are:
Start: 9:00 PM Pacific time (5:00 AM GMT 24 November)
End: 1:00 AM Pacific time (9:00 AM GMT) 24 November
If you experience issues outside those temporary situations listed above, please post in the Bugs Forum.

They announce planned server maintenance there. If you’re talking about the recent server crash, that was a bug and unplanned so of course it’s not announced ahead of time.

This was unplanned maintenance… if they’d known in advance servers were going down, they would have let us know via various channels in advance.

The client crashes are a serious problem for sure. Close friends of mine who had very few crashes prior to HOT have been getting them very frequently ever since, regardless of client binary.

Particularly punishing for the metaevent maps if they can’t get back in to a full map.

Unfortunatly I don’t think any devs play Chronomancer. If they did they would be able to announce all server emergency maintenance.

But is there a true, factual, one answer to it?

I always thought that question based threads were for questions that had one answer to them. For instance “Did the gold rewards in dungeons get nerfed”, and the answer to that one is a simple “Yes.”.

Then the answer is, read the Announcement Forum. That’s where they announce in advance any sort of planned maintenance.
