An idea for WvW
There’s still some resistance to open world pvping and dueling in the population, so if ANet would want to do anything of the sort, it would be after they acclimatized the majority of players to the idea of PvP within the PvE world. It probably won’t happen for some time, if at all, but it’s certainly doable. They can already have players of different teams spawn and attack each other in a PvE map, as BWE2 demonstrated.
I definitely understand. I’m not really a fan of open world pvp either, because you can have so much griefing and trolling that result from that. However, if it was implemented in a sensible way, such as the invasion example, then it wouldn’t bother me as much. If they had systems in place that gave alerts to all players in the area – kind of like Rift’s event system, but with players instead of AI. I think it would give a nice addicting sense of danger to the PVE world, while not promoting random acts of killing/trolling/griefing.
From this, you could have new player titles such as “World guardians” who show up to defend the PVE world.

Actually there is a major resistance to open world pvping and dueling which makes it very unlikely that ArenaNet will ever introduce a feature like that unless they plan on loosing even more players than they did due to ascended gear.
GW2 strictly separates PvP, PvE and WvW for a good reason, most players just don’t – at least, that’s how it seems – don’t want to be bothered with PvP or WvW while they are doing PvE (and vice versa). Starting an invasion event on a server that gets dominated in WvW wont help that server, it would just kitten of the PvE players.

NCSoft already has a game like that called Aion. It too is free to play.
The thing is, what PVE are players doing now in the open world? Most, if not all are busy running instances and FOTM. Most of this open world PVE is pretty barren, especially the mid level zones.

Players are still doing events (at least in Orr), are farming highlevel mats or leveling up their alts. And, as I said before, since they are not doing this in WvW they probably don’t want to be bothered with it.

While I do agree that GankPvP is a virtual impossibility. There is no evidence that they lost any significant amount of players with the introduction of ascended gear, that’s completely baseless nonsense made up by the forum herd. GankPvP is however incredibly unlikely to be implemented because the developers don’t like it, and don’t like games that have it. Not because of any imaginary sway the forumites may think they have over the development team.

I’d PvP if they were fun. I really enjoyed the themed PvP arenas during the Mad King and Wintersday events. They should bring those back.
