An ugly world completion badge...
Maybe a button to display the icon?
I actually do not have world completion on any character. But I do have the little 1 next to my name. Sorry to make your eyes bleed.
I earned my PvP icon (mine happens to be the green one because I spent some time getting to the next level), the same as you earned your World Complete Icon. If you don’t like it, just turn off name plates. I should be allowed to show off my icon anywhere I want to.

The difference here is that pvp icon is on full view all of the time, they should make it the same as mastery or world completion, that it is hidden until focused. It is visual clutter, and tbh unless you have a legendary rank icon then its really not something worth showing off.

I earned my WvW rank too (platinum in “real” WvW), where is my icon?
Why should you as a PvP player that already gets tons of extras including tracks and the xp boosts every other weekend get more than I do? You might want to reevaluate your ego here, some of us have achieved milestones too yet we get nothing for it.

I’ve earned my mastery points by playing the game also and getting to those next levels. Why can’t I show my Mastery levels in PvP and WvW? I should be allowed to show off my Mastery points anywhere I want to.
ANet may give it to you.

I think you should be able to! And I also think that you should be able to show your WvW rank. You can see everyone’s World Completion Icons in all game modes.
Hell, I think you should be able to choose what you show.

This has NOTHING to do with my ego, I don’t have much of one I am pretty rubbish at pvp I just enjoy it a lot and I want to see it grow, the same as I do with WvW which I think ANet REALLY needs to step up it’s game on. I was talking to the OP about them saying the icon is ugly. I enjoy my icon. And I think there should be more icons to represent accomplishments in all game modes.
And since when does not parroting someone’s opinion automatically mean I have some kind of an ego about it? I simply enjoy the icon and what it represents.

you can even change it before getting into the game….to avoid your eyes get hurt again.
and then you can press “ALT” or hold it down whenever you felt masochistic and wanted to hurt your eyes again.

You shouldn’t do that in wvw though where it matters how many enemies you see and how early you see them – ths requires the name plates of all players and you can see the pvp badge of your allies. And like someone said somewhere: it is distracting. But alas, we’ll probably get used to it.

you can still see the enemy name plates since there is a different option for them.this one just disables friendly name plates.
Still, holding down alt or ctrl is not a tedious task before fight neither is tapping them in the middle of fight.

Here are the options one has got:
(I rather live with the yellow thingy clutter)
ETA: My usual shouts are something like this:
“~15+ RS, QL, heading Gol”
I need to estimate the 15 within a second-no time to click them through.

The timing is also a bit off.

Except nameplates actually provide useful information(number and position of people around), not always useful but at least sometimes useful and toggling all the time gets annoying. There is nothing useful about these icons that I can think of.

I know.
Also, TBH, I don’t want anything displayed next to my name.
I don’t even show titles, in games, unless they’re funny, pointless ones (I find most of them boastful).
So, I definitely don’t want stuff like ranks shown next to my name.
Whether they’re high, or low.
It’s bad enough that my char runs around bragging about nothing, without me being forced to, as well.
As I said previously, it almost feels like games are designed by aliens, sometimes.
It concerns me, to an extent, that these games are virtually bringing up people’s children.
What kind of adults are they going to turn into?
Oh, that’s right, we know, because it’s already happened, lol.

But, what if you want to see their names?
For example, if you do WvW, you may want to see if there are characters you know around you, or not.
Also, reading other people’s name choices adds a certain amount of flavour to the game.

Haha! I’m loving Icon Wars. “Hurts my eyes”, rofl.
There are much bigger and better things to agonise over.

Oh, that’s right, we know, because it’s already happened, lol.
The good news is that these people are easy to spot in RL.
You’ll see them in a crossed-arm sulk outside a shop because they can’t buy what they want NOW for half the ticket price.
You’ll also see some of them sporting bruises where they learned that some behaviour and/or comments are not acceptable in RL.

Well, I’m not entirely sure about the first example, as I don’t think most games encourage people to think they can get things cheaper than the sticker price.
..and of course, quite a lot of older people try to haggle, too.
I do think the second example has some merit, though, sadly…
Having said that, many of the ruder people you encounter online are older (often, quite a lot older) people.
So, rudeness is definitely not limited to people who were “brought up” by online games, to be fair.
I do think encouraging people to brag is inadvisable, though.
It’s hard to say if games affect younger people, in that way and if so, how much.
Especially as very young people do just tend to brag more, anyway; as they may not have really learned that most people don’t react well to it, yet.
But, it can’t help, if some of your main social interactions, growing up, involve glorifying bragging.
That has to reinforce that tendency, surely, rather than discouraging it?

The icons themselves simply do not look very good at where they are placed. A little more decent design and a similar placement to the other badges would make them less annoying.
Is there a way to show your own name without someone targetting you in group? I want to see my icon.
This is probably pretty low on the to-do list.
This thread reeks of envy.
Maybe PvP more?
Easily ignored as far as I’m concerned. Give PvPers their ego-peen. Like I care.

They added that a bit back. I have it on an alt key. I’m not sure if that’s standard or that’s what I changed it to. However it only shows (in white) your name, guild tag and any title. Nothing else.
ANet may give it to you.
This game is starting to remind me of all those budget f2p korean mmos that put like ten little icons and titles and pictures all over ppls nameplates -_-
Like, I don’t mind the idea of displaying this stuff, but it needs to have a more streamlined, compact look. Maybe for league, a coloured border around the nameplate or something or even put something around the target portrait, idk.
Also, kind of weirded out that I can see my emerald, but not my star or masteries.

Just give people the choice.
I can’t guarantee no one here is envious, but in my case, don’t want ANYTHING next to my name.
No title, no WvW rank (however high it might get); nothing.
If it was envy, on my behalf, I’d want the thing I’ve done a lot of, or done well at, displayed; but, not anything I haven’t.
That is not the case.
I want it all hidden.
I’m not sure what’s happening to the game, but it doesn’t feel like the type of game I first joined, in this way.
Feels suspiciously like a bait and switch, ATM.
Anet, you have a beautiful game, here – it’s not perfect, but the way to “solve” that is, obviously, not to ruin the things that were good about it.
One of those things was its clean look, without lots of extraneous visual clutter everywhere.
I get that some people like to brag – I don’t like it, but I recognise it – but, it doesn’t mean we all do.
So, please let us hide it.
I don’t mind the league icons in general, but the way they’re tied to the name plate right now feels out of place. I could see them being attached to the same point the world completion star and the mastery point number are placed, so that they fade out if you’re not directly focussing the other person, and only show up when the start and mastery level show up, too.
Right now, if you enter the Heart of the Mists, where pretty much everybody around has tried the pvp league play, it feels a bit like stumbling into minecraft, with little colored cubes all over the place .
They should keep PvP badges in PvP and not include them in PvE based areas.

^ Yeah. Please, they need to make it to display only when focused/hovered the char/name.
I want a badge for gathering soft woods.
I think that the PvP Rank Badge is a healthy addition to the game, however in the future I can see it being a promoter for toxicity in the game with player behavior; such as players looking down on others or refusing to cooperate with players with lower ranks than them. How soon into the future may this happen? Too soon to tell.
I will say that the Badges design is bland, boring and dull looking. It’s simply a colored square with a number.
The things I would change or improve on them would be to firstly, do not make it present next to the characters name all the time. Have it be a hover-over feature like the World Completion Badge. The second thing I would change is the design. Instead of it being a colored number block, I would change it to look like the gem of the division that’s the same size as the block currently. Sort-of like a recolored GEM icon that represents GEMs in the store. Having them vary in shapes is optional.
Just food for thought if any Arenanet Devs happen to read this.

Gone are the days where online communities were brought together by their shared character similarities and relatedness in-game. Now replaced by any number of visually and cognitively obtrusive ‘reward badges’ that serve only to highly everyone’s differences.
How sad it is that the basics of human psychology that once were commonly known and used to tighten communities have these days been lost to this hedonistic materialistic desire to show off how good we are. It only achieves one thing: Fragments the player base and perpetuates an ‘us and them’ mentality.
… and everyone has one.
Anyone else find that the new PvP league icon things next to people’s names are really obnoxious and ugly? Earlier, I was in LA and I looked over at the forge and I could see like 20 of these horrible, yellow squares. I find they literally hurt my eyes.
Also, I really don’t care what PvP division people are in. Please put things like stability by people’s names instead, I’d rather that being shoved in my face, really.
Have you earned your world completion badge?

I would actually be fine with that IF these badges actually showed anything worth caring about but none of them inspires any sort of “wow this person actually did _”.
I guess having maxed out all mastery might mean something since I assume there are a few points that are tough to get and that is assuming you can’t be portaled to it.

As far as I’m concerned, the colors are too eye catching, making them hard to ignore. If PvP ranks must be given special treatment and appear in PvE then make them appear at mouse over, like the Mastery points do.
ANet may give it to you.

Hell, I think you should be able to choose what you show.
This is the best idea!!!
Just as we choose which Title our character shows, we should be able to choose which achievement icon the character shows whether it is for pve, pvp, wvw, or whatever….but it should just be ONE. I also hate the unnecessary visual/ugly clutter.
One of the very first things I do when I begin playing an MMO is turn off every name, icon and number the UI allows me to remove. I want to see the world not a load of floating text. The options to do this vary a lot between games but GW2 has one of then more limited and inflexible systems.
The problem isn’t whether people should be allowed to display the information; it’s the extent to which others are able to filter it to their preference. More filters are a universal good in my opinion. GW2 is poor in that respect. It tends to be all or nothing. Since I want nothing that is manageable from my point of view but it could clearly be improved to suit more people than just the extremes.
