This is the first time I really had a major complaint about a release. Us long time Guild Wars fans played our hearts out in the original series. We paved the way for what evolved into a true MMO in Guild Wars 2. When the Hall of Monuments came out, and allowed us to save our exclusive weapons in it, some of us assumed that we’d be able to pass these weapons down to our ancestors in GW2. Fast forward to release day, we were disheartened to learn that wasn’t the case, and that all our efforts to fill our HoM only gave us Achievement Points (although the boost to 50 AP in each category was a nice gesture later on). So no Tormented weapons…

Then… today comes. And what do we see? Gem Store Tormented weapons. Say what??? The weapons we worked our butts off for aren’t exclusive anymore. New players to the GW series didn’t know just how hard it was to get these weapons. When the Domain of Anguish first came out, we had to grind grind grind in order to get enough Gemstone sets to trade for one. I remember fondly that my friends wanted to be the first ones to get an Armbrace, so we did a 16 hour run, from start to finish, to get the bonus gems for doing the entire 4-part raid run. Waking up at 2am in order to coordinate a run like this is pure dedication. The run took longer than it should because one of our tanks over-napped on the scheduled break at the midway point… To add, this was before we knew about mechanics and pull locations, so we suffered greatly trying to succeed. To further my rant, I was the only Heal Monk, so keeping everyone alive was a chore. Anyways, Torment, Margonite, Stygian, and Titan Gems. Those were our prize for working hard. By doing a 4-part run, we could trade our extra Titan Gems for the other cheaper ones with other players. All in all, we worked for our weapons. We earned them, and proudly showed them off in Kamadan. For a time, they were like Legendary weapons because they were so hard to get. Over time, they got cheaper due to duping scandals which made Armbraces more common, but that’s another story.

To me, the price of having to buy Tormented weapons with tickets, or from the TP isn’t the issue. I can afford to do so, so access to these skins aren’t the problem. What I do feel strongly for is that anyone can purchase these skins now. In my opinion, Anet should have kept these weapons as unique HoM skins for only those players who had them stored. Or, what they could have done is let players from GW1 have a better skinned version (like more glowy or something), and sell a lesser looking one on the Gem Store. I would have been fine with that.

With all this said, Anet needs to really consider their old school players. Bonus AP is nice, but give us something that we can have that Special Snowflake feel. 50/50 HoM took effort, and effort should be rewarded.

Are you saying there was grinding in GW1? Ack!

I have some weapons in my HoM, but it doesn’t bother me if they appear here in GW2. Seems lots of people have been asking for skins from GW1. So, I guess ArenaNet listened to the playerbase. =)

No, the playerbase is hungry for great content. Like expansions. Dungeons. Parts of the map that have been locked since release. Anything but this living story/cash shop dribble of pointlessness.

GW1 is an entirely different game. Game GW1 players do not ‘deserve’ rewards in GW2. It’s nice that they provided a link, but that’s because Anet chooses to.

If Anet released a Torment weapons in their gem shop in GW1, hey, I can understand.

But GW2 is an entirely different game and you shouldn’t be holding it as a leash to GW1.

Different games, but they’re both linked with the HoM, thus the reason why I would have like something that was pass downed through the ages.

I do understand that sharing awesome skins with GW2 players is good overall. But my insides ache for some ancient rewards that my current character’s ancestor left for him. If not my Tormented weapons, perhaps my Obsidian armor?

Gw2 would not exist without Gw1 and the players who spent their hard earned dollars(or other tender) there to support that game, Gw2 players should be mindful and at least somewhat thankful or respectful in that sense. 50/50 was a bigger grind than anything in gw2 to date yet including making all of the current legendary weapons. They also outlined you would get rewards for the HoM 30/50 would have item rewards anything past that was titles. They’ve given us (Gw1 vets) some decent things even if they chose to take the fell blade and release it as a purple champ weapon re-textured and 1 handed.

Imagine a Gw3 is made and you can buy rng boxes for a shot at a twilight or sunrise skin because that’s the level of prestige that the torment weapons were for gw1 players.

But to be honest this game is getting really tiresome with its constant Gem-Store only Gw1 themed or existing content. With the seemingly endless supply of white knights who defend garbage practices that insult the players who supported the franchise, its no wonder why fewer people who played since launch disappear day by day which is sad since most core game-play elements are actually solid x.×.

I may be harsh but i care deeply about the game.

I understand that many players from GW1 bought and supported GW2 but don’t expect to get something from that, why should you expect to get something, and you still get an armor skin, titles, achievement points, exclusive pets for the ranger, isn’t that enough?
You should be glad they add skins from gw1 in the game, buy them to support gw2 if you want. You speak about how hard was to get those weapons in GW1…yea in GW1,this is GW2,we have here other weapons hard to get aka legendaries. This is not GW1.

Gw1 is dead and the lore from gw1 is fading get over it already just accept it for what it is.
This is gemstore wars 2. Not even the same developers that was working on gw1.
Everything that connect to the lore in gw1 they try to eliminate , see a pattern?
For those who didn’t play it there was no such thing as a dragon there.

This topic doesn’t even make sense. This offering of Tormented weapons is a nod to GW1 players, not a weird backwards way to ignore them. Only those of us who played GW1 would even know what a Tormented weapon is. I played hard to get my Torment items and gleefully squeed when I saw they were being offered in GW2.

Keep in mind that this is a game. If you refer to any part of it as work, then you are doing it wrong.

It was more along the lines of “Why are people getting to enjoy my exclusive weapons that I worked hard for in GW1”. So the proper way to give a nod to us is to allow only us GW1, HoM players to retain the weapons in question. Of course, this is only coming from my self-centered opinions.

Adding new skins through the black lion chests is a cheap move Anet. If it was garunteed i could get the tickets from the black lion chests would be fine but the Rng is too much. With a game’s own end game focused on asthetics and making your character looking the way you want it too, im so suprised that almost all these skins require you to buy keys from the gem store and then have Rng to get a ticket to decide your fate. Personally, i find this slightly insulting that there is no way to get them in game besides being lucky with chests or dropping an inordinant amount of gold to get on skin. Skins is one of the best features in any MMoRPG and though we dont require to have the skins why cant their be some alternative method for those that dont have credit cards or alot of gold or for any other reason?? Why cant they just drop in with the rest the champ boxes or add a new way to obtain the skins? I know you get money paying for the keys and all but… idk this, i dont think is a fair way to do it

I do agree that Tormented weapons should have been part of the original HoM rewards, but they decided to go with a few other iconic GW1 weapons along with a few new things. But I’m still fine with the fact that they didn’t put the Tormented weapons there, and that they are now available to anyone. I would actually be disappoint if the current GW2 versions of Tormented weapons were my only HoM skins, because I think most look much worse than their GW1 counterparts.

What I do think is a problem is the fact that every new skin we get is gemstore RNG box only. There have only been a handful of new skins added outside of what is available via Black Lion Claim Tickets. And much of what is available via the tickets are old skins from GW1 or obvious reskins of existing GW2 item. What is needed are new skins that are available in-game. And I don’t count buying it from the TP as in-game, since the supply of those items is still dependent on BL keys, which are primarily gemstore items.

The most insulting part is that they feel they deserve the same price for a re-used skin/model and a completely new design. I just don’t feel that slapping some fire onto a common armor skin warrants the same price as making something as original as Zodiac or Aetherblade armor.

I think the Dragon Bash and Bazaar were the best living story events in terms of the reward availability. More so for the Bash, but the Bazaar still had Aetherized weapons as rare drops. That probably changed in later events because the gemstore bags weren’t selling enough.

I understand that Anet exists to make money, but there is a point at which the desire for money outweigh’s giving the players value for their money and a good game experience. That’s a line I think Anet has crossed more than a few times.

ANet isn’t the same company GW1 players remember, lots of new people joined the team. GW2 is a cash cow, nothing more nothing less. Why bother release a proper expansion when you’ve got people paying 15 euro for a few gems? Unfortunately it’s the way they seem to think it.

Your argument would be more compelling if Anet hadn’t also given a tormented weapon to every GW1 player who completed a pretty easy quest at the the end. Maybe you didn’t stick around long enough to experience the Wayfairer’s Reverie quests, but they were pretty simple quests which rewarded everyone a Reverie Gift, which gave you one Tormented Weapon. They were hardly rare anymore. And honestly I appreciate Anet bringing in designs from GW1, there were some fantastic ones and GW2 has a distinct lack of armor and weapon diversity. I just wish every release wasn’t some form of RNG, that seems more disrespectful to GW1 fans.

In my 10 years of playing MMOs (15 playing PC games, 25 playing console games) I’ve only paid a sub fee to play one game, EVE Online. I did pay for a Minecraft server for quite some time, but that’s a bit different. I just didn’t feel that any of the pay games were worth the extra cost. I did play more than few free ones over the years. Some had ridiculous cash shops, but others were quite reasonable.

It has been GW2 that finally made me fed up with the cash shop idea, and come to actually prefer just paying $15/mo and not having to deal with crap like every new armor being gemstore only. The only saving grace of it is the ability to trade gold for gems, but that is still a concept I never did like. (but that’s not something to discuss here)

I never played a game with a monthly fee mainly because I can’t afford to pay those fees for games I don’t play very often. I did hear many good things about EVE Online, I imagine it’s a good game.

If this game was free to play I wouldn’t say a thing about this stuff, mainly because I understand it’s the companies main method to generate revenue, but with GW2 this isn’t the case.

My quarrel with this game is only one, the fact that I paid full price for a game that is buy to play but acts like a free to play one. I knew there was going to be a cash shop and all, but nowhere I expected ANet to go this far.

For the way I see it, enough is enough. I may still play the game for what it is but no way in my sane mind I’m going to buy any expansions or will ever buy gems with real money. Too many bridges have been burned.

Yeah, I’d be ok with their business practices if this was a free game. But it’s not ok when you’re charging a AAA title price of $60.

As for an expansion, I’m not sure if I’d buy it at this point or not. But I am definitely not giving any real cash for the gemstore.

I completely agree. This is coming from a GW1 vet too. And yes I myself had 2 tormented weapons from GW1 which I worked really hard for (same with my full fissure of woe ritualist armor – and quite frankly, if they put that in the gemstore in GW2 I wouldn’t care either), do I expect special treatment? Heck no, GW2 is a different game, and I’m glad we now have the opportunity to have them in GW2 via whatever means necessary.

Sure there could have been better ways to implement/re-introduce the tormented weapon skins, like perhaps as a reward from a ‘return of Abaddon’ living story or something epic like that, but nevertheless they’re here now and it’s great. I don’t know why people are moaning about it, I seriously don’t.

Post made by Operetta on the GW2 reddit.

I’m not one to complain to much. Ive been with Guild wars since it released 9 years ago. But this kinda stuff is a bit annoying. When we do get skins that aren’t tied to the BLC it always seems to be 3 pieces of armor and not a full set, and with weapons it seems to be only available to half of the classes.

The first S.A.B released with weapons missing and it took a full year just to get the other weapons added to it. And with the recent worm world boss only a rifle was added, but when it comes to the BLC they seem to be able to make weapons for every class. The Ascended set the only full set to not be sold in the gem store. I wouldn’t be surprised of they put Obsidian armor in the gem store now.

I’m glad they got away from the entitlement you guys who played a 10 year old game have. Instead you should think of it as something like “man the whole community really likes the look of these items and the devs made it so everyone could get them that’s really cool I can get this again and have nostalgia town all over my character”, instead of this you owe me attitude for buying a game years ago. I’m sorry you got tons of free stuff that was carried over into this game and it wasn’t enough.

I could care less about taking prestigious items from GW and bringing them here as this game has it’s own set of rules. However, I did get upset when they took and rehashed the Fellblade skin into the 1hander. Those items should be left alone.

What I dislike about the approach so far though is placing these weapons skins into lottery boxes instead of just selling Black Lion Tickets or eliminating the chest/keys altogether and just sell the skins.

OR…God forbid give us some new content where we actually get new armor and weapon skins. Let’s face it…crafting sucks. Unless it is an integral part of the game, it has never been great in any game.

As long as they don’t neglect to also add skins that are earnable purely through in game means, I don’t see a problem. And they have, not terribly frequently, but they have (they would do well to up the frequency a bit though).
My only real complaint is that they once again stuck them in those infernal black lion chests.

I’m kinda bugged that they’re a gem store item, given so far 90% of the cosmetics we’ve had are gemstore. x: Aside from that they’re.. Okay, I guess..

How many sets have actually been added outside of the gemstore/BL chest system? I might have missed a set or two, but I think this is all of it.

Fractal weapons
Zenith weapons
Ascended weapons/armor
SAB weapons – partial credit, because they aren’t actually available outside of short periods
Wintersday toy/wooden weapons – same as SAB, limited availability
Champ reward weapons – partial credit, these were reskins

Then we have weapons that were temporarily available ingame, but later transferred to gemstore items.

Dragon’s Jade weapons
Aetherized Weapons
Incomplete Halloween weapon set
Scerlite weapons

And then finally the list of gemstore/claim ticket exclusives, which currently includes the above category.

Tormented
Lovestruck
Dreamthistle
Zodiac
Fused
Wintersday

Plus the fact that we have no armor sets added ingame, aside from Ascended. The gemstore currently has 12 new armor sets, not included the 3 that existed at release and the 3 reskinned Flame armor sets.

It’s pretty clear that adding non-monetized skins/armor is very low on the list of priorities. And even the ones available ingame currently are part of additions intended to be longterm goals (timegated ascended crafting, high level fractals, achievement rewards).

Haven’t given a single $ to Arena Net since the release.
If I were to buy gems with real money, where would my money go? In supporting mediocre 1 hour bi-weekly Living Story content I haven’t even touched for 6 months?

They’re worth a few hours if you bother getting all of the achievements. But yeah, about an hour sounds right for seeing all there is to see in this release(and quite a few others). And quite a bit of the time for achievements is spent repeating things due to failures or achievements that are locked till after your first success.

The living story has at least gotten better with the last few releases, in both terms of the story and the content/event design. Unfortunately, the events tend to be added in very broken states that require several days of patching.

Still, the amount of content that’s actually been “added” (quotes because it’s all temporary) over the last year is small compared to what we would expect from a single retail expansion. Being somewhat generous, and giving an average of 3 hours of non-repeat/busy work content per release, that’s only 72 hours of playable content over a year worth of bi-weekly releases.

That is a decent amount of ‘free’ content, but how long would it take you to get through all the content in a full expansion? How long did it take to get through everything in GW2’s initial release? Every zone/heart, all the dungeons, etc. How long did it take to get through the added campaigns and expansion in GW1? Sure, you can rush through the main storyline in GW1’s campaigns, but that is only a small portion of the unique content each game has.

I think the part that does bother me the most with Anet’s statements is that they have claimed to have added an ‘expansion worth’ of content. It’s a claim I definitely challenge, and it doesn’t stand up very well at all after you see the fact that all but an hour or two of that content no longer exists. If a friend that had not played for 6-12 months asked you what was new, how much would you have to tell them about? And how much of that is only a story of events long gone, that they will never see for themselves?

Living story is certainly a good idea, and a good addition to the game. It just doesn’t work when it’s the only addition to the game.

I think they have, but technically they haven’t at the same time because >75% of the content was temporary any way. You can’t include content you can’t even play.

This isn’t the first time skins from GW1 have been offered from the Weapon Trader, and it won’t be the last. If anything, this wasn’t a bash against players from the first game, but rather a tribute to them, to give them a taste of home, as it were. There will be other skins coming from GW1 again, I’ll bet. Relax and enjoy them, and be glad ANet is trying to bring them back at all.
