Anet, how can this be fair ?
Maybe you’ve watched some old video and it’s quite normal that, at the start of the game, prices weren’t that high like now because none had any amount of gold. 60G in the very first months of the game was like 600g now, there weren’t all these method to farm money and was (in my opinion) more difficult to earn them.
Why didn’t you wait? They said they’re releasing a way to craft precursor. Instead you took a gamble that didn’t pay off. Sadly most of the time, mystic forge will end badly.
You should definitely have waited before blowing your gold. Anet have already said they’re going to revamp Legendary weapon acquisition.

They said that in december 2012, the wait period is so long that some people actually have more than 5 legendaries
Is currently emotionally unstable because Breaking Bad is over
easy to say that you should wait but when you have all your gifts ready to go it is really hard to resist the temptation.
They didn’t give anything solid back then but now we know they’re lifting the cap for crafting up to 500 and allowing precursors to be crafted. The only reason why they would back out of this is if there is this huge backlash like with the introduction of ascended gear. So far there hasn’t been much. If anything, it’s most likely a welcome addition to the game.
Its definitely unfair but I don’t think Anet can be faulted too much.
There were many occasions since the game started when the economy spiked in inflation, and every new content added gives another opportunity for players to find a way to farm gold. While its difficult to a$$e$$ whether its exactly similarly hard to obtain 40g back then compared to obtaining 700g right now, due to the large number of factors, it would be unfair for Anet to rectify inflation by providing cheaper ways to obtain precursors (in this sense, the planned development regarding other ways to obtain them will actually be tricky) – unfair to players who might have paid real money or worked hard to obtain their legendaries before.
Therefore, one way to think about it is that the current system of obtaining precursors (based on RNG) was just too poorly designed, but because it has been left unchanged for a year, its very difficult to rectify properly without being unfair to one party. (This is not really the case though, since current legendary owners can still benefit from new systems if they craft another legendary after all)
Another way is that you can simply consider it as a reward for the players who played the game early, or at least worked for their legendaries early.
(note to editors: why is the word “a$$e$$” being censored?)
You could have always done the forge with weapons from dungeon tokens. This way you would be gaining gold from running those as well as selling the non-precursor exotics you got back. Just run the various dung’s and save the tokens, trade them in for a GS, get 4 and forge. I do this with daggers regardless of the legendary that I’m working on as the daggers cost fewer tokens than a GS and spark sells for a lot… which you can use towards buying the precursor that you actually want.
Personally I also save up my rare weapons from those daily events (maw, kitten, jor, etc.) and toss them in the forge at the end of the week as well. I set aside the ones that have expensive precursors and forge those together (ex 4 rare gs/ 4 rare dagger/ 4 rare staff). The ones that I don’t want that type of I toss in randomly to increase the chance of them coming out as something else. Again, if you get an exotic that’s not the precursor that you want, sell it.
On a side note, the rare armors I get from events I salvage for ectos and forge the runes to try for superior runes.
I’ve never felt the need to spend gold to try to forge out a precursor after using these methods. At worst using these methods you’ll increase your gold over time and get yourself closer to being able to just straight out buy the precursor if you need to.
I do agree that precursors can be a kitten to get unless you get lucky though. Make sure you wine and dine Zommoros first.

As others said, 60g had a lot more buying power back towards release. Everything was cheaper, because there wasn’t as much money in the system. Heck, I still remember buying 250 Ancient Bones for 18c each. However, people have added more and more money to the system by farming CoF and they will continue to add money to the system by running dungeons. Money is going in faster than it is being consumed by gold sinks, so the prices will continue to rise. Eventually, precursors will become craftable, so at that point their prices will fall, but the prices of the materials used to craft them will spike.
Also, a note about using the Mystic Forge. You chose to gamble, it is not in any way “unfair” that you didn’t get a precursor. The Mystic Forge is all about luck and you are not entitled to getting a precursor after putting 200g in. If you lost 200g, you probably were not efficiently using the forge. When I went for my precursor (The Legend), I put over 1200 staves into the forge. Because I used buy orders and sold my exotics instead of reforging them, I only lost about 40g. Ultimately I got my precursor elsewhere, but by making smart choices, I would have had to put almost 20,000 staves into the forge before using the forge was more expensive than just buying the precursor outright.
Back at headstart and for like a month after, 60g was a less attainable goal than 700g is now.
Back then 1g was worth 400 gems. I know I stocked up a couple $100 worth.
60g was $300.
Crafting a precursor will probably be much cheaper than their current value, though you’ll probably only get to make 1.
