My favorite : “We don’t have anything we can say right now”.
(…)
Why on earth are you doing a kitten interview than?

Because they were presenting some stuff from GW2 and were asked by a bunch of young people standing at their both and thought it would be rude to say just “no”?

I watched the video and thought “Why are they asking him theses questions? Do they really believe A-Net would reveal some new things this way, that no one else knows?”

I generally think A-Net has no learn to communicate with their community (their customers) much better but I also think the growing kitten-storm is an overreaction.

Greetings.

basically part of what i believe is that we are consumers.
we bought the game (some of us spent $270 on it(cause i had faith arenanet would provide))
we wanna know what we are paying for( we were paying for more than just, eh lets face it, not the greatest personal story)
and then again when we purchase stuff from the gem store.
i want to know what projects the money is going toward.
I still have alot of faith in arena net, and can see things are improving.
however it is slow going and there is not alot of transparency as to whether its going in a direction i want to pay for.

It’s really very simple. I have a ‘no cash for trash’ policy. If Anet (or any other dev team) wants to get in touch and find out what I what I will or won’t pay for, all they gotta do is ask. That’s the only communication that is necessary.

Dramatization:

Q: Will you give us money if we give you ascended gear?
A: No.

Q: Will you give us money for more Living Story?
A: No.

Q: Will you give us money for Guild Missions your Guild will never be able to play?
A: No.

Q: Will you give us money if we give you Megasuffer?
A: No.

Q: Will you give us money if we give you a new trait system?
A: Details.
Q: Like so (provide details).
A: Hell, no.

Q: Will you give us money if we ditch Living Story and make an expansion that will effectively double the size of the explorable game world and also more than double the amount of available content, including, among other things, new races and professions and weapon-independent skills and free pony rides?
A: YES.

Q: Will you give us money for a petless ranger?
A: No, that should have been an option all along.

Q: Will you give us money if we increase the level cap?
A: Bye.
Q: (perks up) Buy?
A: No, but if you lower the level cap to 20 like it should have been all along I’ll consider adding GW2 to my second Guild Wars account.

The table is a fable.

@Afro Dude, you are right indeed.

I’ve learnt to not bother asking ANet of anything. They have one of the worst dev-to-player relationships in MMOs, tbh.

Thanks for your post, though. I’m glad to see I’m not one of few to think the same for a longer time now.

People are so easily satisfied nowadays that they couldn’t care less about the major weaknesses of the game as well as suggestions, as you pointed them out ( look at those “you know kitten”, “your 5k hours mean nothing” etc. comments above ).

If they are one of the worst developers, why are you here and why are you playing this game? Why are you still posting? Move on….

I don’t believe that people are easily satisfied, in fact, I think it is the exact opposite. I think there are so many people who feel they are ‘OWED’ information, etc. on this game that they get all nasty about it.

This is a darned it you do and darned if you don’t situation.

Could you name me one MMORPG that’s fully released in which a developer responded or remedied immediately or shortly after receiving a huge wad of complaints on the forums?

Rift

Easily with one of the fastest update times even after going F2P all without gauging the public by limiting loot or causing waves like requiring people buy their store currency for progression. It’s really not that difficult to do honestly it’s been done multiple times Rift is just the most recent.

LMAO. Yes. Rift is amazing. They listened to people and did what they said. And lost a huge percentage of their population after the first expansion.

Maybe they listened to the wrong people.

Rift was a huge nasty problem. I was there playing and left because what they did made no sense for the game. Trion listened to the whiners and complainers on the forums and not to their basic design and ideas in the game. The players were concerned with little parts of the game, not to the whole connected game. The lore was interesting in the game, but they threw it out the window to please the players and then no one was happy.

To add to this though not refering to any specific game something what players want isnt what they need. It is easy to identify a problem but its not always that easy to fix it because MMOs are complex and need to cater for a wide variety of people. Addressing directly a concern players have without looking at the big picture and making sure the fix will not negatively affect anything else is probably worst then leaving things as is.

… lets switch back to Gw2. In the manifesto they said " it doesn’t make you spend hours preparing to have fun rather than just having fun". What a lot of people understood by that is, it will be easy to get BiS. What Arenanet did was make gear entirely optional. In truth both are a solution to the same problem. While in MMO X I need to repeat this raid to get this gear tier which will then allow me to access fun content A much less beat it, in Gw2 right when I reach max level without bothering to get a single piece of gear beyond what dropped / was awarded to me through the personal story I can go in play whatever content and finish it successfully. But based on how often that line is quoted as a lie because of how long it takes to get a full set of ascended gear it is quite clear for a lot of people its not about an implementing something that satisfies “a promise” its about implementing that feature in the way I am expecting it to be implemented.

Honestly, I never based my dislike for Ascended on that quote. I based it on the quote from Eurogamer about “Best statistical loot by level 80.” The quote you’re referring to is very ambiguous, just like, “GW2 is the perfect game for those who loved GW.” Considering that that was exactly the way gear stats were obtained in the original GW, it’s not a stretch to assume that meant flat acquisition curve for BiS in GW2. If others are basing their argument on the “manifesto” quote, they’re off-base. The manifesto was hype.

My point was that the relationship between ANet and its customers in these forums is vastly different than the relationship between a hasn’t-launched-yet crowd-funded game and its supporters. Whether the latter will revolt later is irrelevant to where they are now. Those who bought into GW2 before launch were not complaining then, either.

You mean when they tried to keep the subscription model during the worst time of our economic problems? Yeah that’s not due to design flaws buddy that’s due to the economy. look it up it’s not that hard to do the math and actually see the history behind it. Which btw here’s another bit of history. Since they became F2P guess what they got all those people back. Yep. Have fun rolling around in that truth juice for a while. The fact is they aren’t the only ones. Games in which they have a vision and then keep an open honest conversation going with the community ALWAYS do better than games in which they are quiet and squeamish about saying anything. Always. It’s historic fact. PoE is one of the most recent to adopt this system, guess what, they aren’t crying nor is the game dying they are thriving. So here’s a challenge, name a single game in which they actually had an open conversation going with the community that died directly because they listened to the players and we’re not talking about the niche community now (like Wildstar is doing and is now paying for for being too hardcore) we’re talking about the entire community.

I want nothing in this game more than I want first-person view. There are a lot of people in this thread who agree. I wouldn’t use it for combat; I am well aware of the problems that would occur if I were to do so. I think the vast majority of people who want this feature also understand that using first-person view would be a terrible idea for any combat situation.

We do not want first-person view for combat.

We want first-person view for screenshots, machinima, and simply being able to enjoy the magnificent artwork. I want to be able to do something as simple as look up. I want to be able to take a picture of the landscape that isn’t what I can see while looking through a vista. I want to have the option to use something that I know already works in the engine, if not perfectly. We don’t want to run around in first-person view all the time. We want to look at the game environment in better detail. We want to walk up to a person and see them, and their armor and weapons, without having to do a ridiculous dance in which we walk past them and try to zoom to the right location.

We want something that is one of the most basic features of any MMO. Many other games allow first-person view, and people don’t seem to have any problem at all understanding when to use it, and when to zoom out to third-person. I had never even considered that until interview on norn in jumping puzzles. I don’t know how anyone would be confused about when first-person is a good option, and when third-person is needed. But we know people have managed to play other games and it hasn’t caused problems. I bring up other games not to say I want Guild Wars 2 to be like other games; I do not. But we know from these other games that having first-person view does not cause the sort of confusion you seem to say it will in the recent interview. People just are not quite that dense. They know when to zoom out and play. Please do not let combat be a concern for this feature.

I don’t think there is any single change that is simultaneously so easy to implement, so often and broadly requested, and that would make such a large improvement in the quality of life for so many players.

The game is beautiful. We want to be able to really look at it, sometimes, instead of our own backsides.

Their really isn’t any heavy armor that is too revealing, that’s onething i feel anet is out of touch about. More revealing armor, stop designing armor that only the amish would like.

We do not want first-person view for combat.

See… the reason you may want DOESN’T have to be the same as the reason a developer decides not to implement it. I’m sure they understand quite well what players want to use it for, but they decided that the problems it CAN cause in OTHER areas wouldn’t be worth it, at least at this point.

Perhaps a solution can be found later (like an auto-kickout of FPV when in combat), but as of right now, that solution isn’t in the code, and they don’t want to just force it in.

Just because you don’t LIKE the answer given doesn’t mean it’s not a valid answer.

Now this is something I like to see.

I’ll add:

Q: Will you give us money if, in addition to the new content listed above (dungeons, zones, classes, weapons, skills, etc.), we also add large numbers of new additions to the costume shop?
A: Yes, I will support the game by buying costumes and skins, but only contingent upon you also releasing lots more content.
