Before you reply to this, please consider the classes you’ve played most with. My main is an engineer, but i PvP a lot with thiefs and mesmers (for obvious reasons)

Let me first say that I know many of this stuff they are working on, I know that they only have a couple devs working on balancing and game bug fixes, and I know this post seems like a bit of rant.

Ever since release it seems Anet has shown favoritism to classes in all aspects. Not just the attention they pay to them, but items also. Now playing mostly as an engineer I’ve always felt left out. They have yet to (though they say are) make us up to par when compared to other classes. But it is not just the gameplay that I feel that they are paying favoritism it is also the following.

1. Armor. Have you seen heavy armored compared to the rest? The level of detail and pure coolness of it was amazing. It seemd to me that they spent a lot more time creating the armors for them and making each unique. When looking at Medium armor they all seem to be very…lame. Don’t get me wrong, they are some really cool ones. But here is when the other problem arises, the armor seems to go with speicific classes. Most of the medium armor looks like it should be with a ranger (Such as the WvW armor, Arah armor, etc), then the other half seem to go great with thiefs (just about all the starting armor, commando, whipser, etc) while engineers get the dredge armor.

2. Weapons. I use rifle mostly and pistols. Not so much shield. It seems they made some weapon skins look…well amazing. Most of the unique exotic focuses, staffs, scepters, shields (yes i know we can use these, but so can many other classes), ESPECIALLY greatswords, regular swords, axes, and some longbows. I took the time today to write down all the unique named exotics and look at them online…WOW. Those weapon classes that I just listed had some amazing looking weapons. Don’t get me wrong, rifle has some cool ones. But many of them are eh. Hyperbeam and Charrzzoka are about the coolest. Most pistols just look bad except for maybe 3 (the rest have skins you can easily get) and combine that with the concept that every peice of light armor seems to have some kind of small skirt/trench coat that hides the weapons you hardly see them unless your in combat. Take the Halloween update. Chainsaw swords, Cool looking staffs, amongst the other cool skins. What do rifles get? A vine with a small pumpkin…

3. The attention they pay to classes in patches. I know this is turning a bit into an engineer rant, but since release we have only been nerfed for some reason. I dont know why, because every other classes can otu class us in everything we do.

4. What anet is concentrating on after post launch. PvP seems very neglected (honestly felt unfinished at release) and gets stale fast (many of my early pvp friends have stopped playing because they feel ranking up is too much grind and it gets tiring), the PvE dungeons have been amazing. Every month we’re getting new PvE stuff (which is great). WvW had a ton of hype around it pre launch, but it seems overly hyped. I never feel like im doing something important. I capture a gigantic keep that will either be lost in a couple hours, or by tomorrow.

5. Guilds seem a lot more useless than they should be. Since you can join 4 it allows you to join more that suit your playstyle and I don’t have much of a problem with that, it is the lack of uniqueness and guild community compared to GW1 that has got me sad. No guild halls, no awesome capes that are noticeable by all (now we get bad looking dungeon armor and have to choose between that look or another endgame look), things to do as guilds (GvG, various PvE things). It just seems they gave little attention to them.

This was a bit of a rant, ill admit. But I keep seeing all this content being pushed out every month while some classes traits are still broken and the things we have can do currently are bland. I’ve been thinking of taking a break from the game till I get some stuff that keeps my attention, not just gets my attention (like new holiday content and what not).

Virtually every class feels the same way to be honest, you need to be able to step back objectively and speak to all the classes to see it though.

Necro has more broken skills than you can shake a sceptre at, while being overall lacklustre. Ranger is so direly underpowered and boring they need to take the whole thing back to the drawing board, no simple buff will change that. Even the much maligned mesmer has got no less than 3 pages of unresolved bugs that have been present since Beta2, and despite that the only attention the class ever gets is nerfs, not fixes.

Against this background, engy is actually one of the least buggy classes

I have played them, and I personally don’t seem that as bad. I’m not saying they are without bugs. Engy, while you may consider least buggy, is probably the most underpowered, if not for the ranger. I’d gladly take a necro over an engy at its current state. I would definatly take a mesmer, warrior, any other class besides engy.

To me the only part of the OP that held true is the neglect of pvp in GW2, which I don’t think is by design, but by failure of that team to deliver. Maybe a little bit of design problem, too.

Complaining about gear as a engineer is silly. The whole focus of the profession is a multitude of kits. Complaining about gear in GW2 is a bit silly, too, as every weapon type is used by 2 or more professions.

Guilds and basic tools for social organization are lacking. Heck, guilds were so badly bugged at launch, it was clear they weren’t ready to launch. This weakness I think is systemic, that the devs don’t consider social relationships anything they need to support or engineer encouragement for.

I just wonder when the GUILD WARS aspect of Guild Wars game franchise will be implemented. In GW1, the guild halls helped people to get to know each other, create a unity. Then there was GUILD WARS, which we don’t have here. Wpvp and Spvp are not GUILD WARS, guild wars are wars between guilds.

Culling bugs can be best exploited by mesmers and thieves. that’s why they seem favored.

only thieves know how to play, they chant “L2P” every time their god mode is challenged.

Mesmers and thieves are just plain better than engineers. Also, having played all 3, I found engineers to be boring. This seems to be a consensus.

And thieves aren’t?…. I’ve played every proff and thief is just bland as hell. We rarely swap for anything other than escaping or getting around, whatever your build is based around, it’s one weapon set. Meaning you are spamming 3, 5, and 1 on one weapon set 99% of the time. Wooo so fun. A pve rotation in WoW has 10x the variety than this, which is sad.

IMO ele’s are the most fun to play because they are very action oriented on D/D you are switching elements every second of every second using a ton of all your skills.

Thieves at least have the stealth mechanic going for them and the ability to kill a target fast. Engineers should have crazy gadgets or impressive machines or something but just… don’t.

1. Armor. Have you seen heavy armored compared to the rest?

Yeah, I have. Every time my warrior friend shows me a new outfit, I go like “dear, you plan on, like, wearing that in…public?!”

2. Obviously, it’s easier to make big weapons detailed and “shiney”. But this is, again, a matter of taste. You liked the Halloween staff skins? I didn’t. I thought they were too on the “dark side” and having in mind my current staff skin is a blue ball on a stick…your pumpkin on a vine actually sounds good…

I dunno about you but stealth doesn’t make my profession any more exciting and the last time I fought an engineer he had a bunch of turrets that shot missiles or w/e at me that kept knocking me down. That’s pretty cool… it’s something. Not to mention laying a ton of bombs on the ground. IDK, maybe it’s not that great I never tried an eng but it sure looked fun compared to what I had.

I have to disagree on armor completely. In my opinion, about 90% of heavy armor looks mediocre or outright terrible, with a few great looking sets inbetween (CoF, Vigil, Priory, Arah, Koda, some cultural armors) that tend to be popular. Medium armor, while lacking in diversity, usually looks fantastic. Just off the top of my head: Stalwart, Whispers, CoF, Conquest, many cultural armors, Noble, Rogue armor, the skin used by named sets, etc. all look great.

YMMV; I play excitin’ Thieves most ah the time, what are always lookin’ for new ways ta do stuff, tryin’ out new things, new builds, new zones, with new weapons. I’m almost never bored with me Thief, but it’s ah matter ah what ya like an’ what ya don’. (an’ I’d guess PvE vs PvP, I only do PvE)

Every class has got its problems – ya wanna talk Nerfs? We got two whole CC powers ta our name an’ the last update killed one of em. Thieves get nerfed so of’en we jus’ leak sawdust now when ya hit us. We’re the squishiest class in the game an’ the way the nerf bats ah comin’ it won’ be long ‘til that’s the only way we’ll stand out at all.

From what I can tell Warrior’s the only one what has nothin’ ta complain about … an’ that makes sense – how do ya mess up a fighter?

But, ya know, wait an’ see … they’re doin’ their best – I believe that. I don’ think, for a second, they’re sittin’ in their offices thinkin’ up new ways ta drive us nuts, (well, maybe sometimes) an’ we just gotta ride the wave, ya know?

I’m sorry I stepped outta yer box, don’ worry, if
ya whine enough they’ll put me right back.

They are definitely biased towards Greatsword… But that’s because they’re… Great.

Seriously though, all the other weapons look lame compared to GS.

The funny thing is that I like the Heavy Armor sets the least and the rest is rarely great as it is.

But then I have noticed that some Heavy Armor sets look great on male characters and I play female ones. If I remember GW1 there were a lot of elite armor sets that looked great on female toons as well.

Overall I think they had better designs for armor then.

I do think the OP has a point that the teams that are working on various parts of the game are probably smaller than they should be to gain more momentum on fixes as well as new content. The AMA should they were sorry that Los Shores was released as it was and this is probably a decision made because they had to bring something out but it wasn’t ready enough.

It’s all part though of people’s unwillingness to pay for a service like with subs. You could wonder why a game like WoW manages to keep 10 million subs for so long. It could be that they have enough people working on the game and are more in tune with what’s needed in a MMO to please customers. I don’t know but it’s what I can imagine.

This game is sub free and that puts limitations on the cash flow for Anet. A direct result is that some things take longer because they probably have small teams working their tails off. Sadly, skeletal crews have a higher risk of mistakes and we see that in many games that downsize teams. Bugs take longer to fix and new content takes longer to come out or comes in smaller doses.

Class balancing will take more of an effort but isn’t really needed that much until they start focusing on sPvP. I would say they do what they can with the means they have.

Whether that’s good enough for you as a customer, is another thing. It is funny to see how many classes can use a greatsword though….

It’s a game forum. The truth is not to be found here.
