I really like this game but there are some choices the devs made that leave me thinking they didn’t put certain thought into the game that it needed, for example:

1. When walking around as certain human characters like the ranger or thief how come it look like I have a corn-cob stuck up my butt? I mean we have to watch our char walk everwhere how about you make it pleasing to look at and put weight behind the steps instead of kitten footing around.

2. Alot of the skills for thief and rangers just look stupid, they do what they need to do but it looks like they don’t know how to handle a weapon. We have to watch these chars do the skills time and time again and since this game is basically all about aesthetics why not make the skills look cool or at least professional.

Maybe I’m just more vain then others but I really liked how the animations looked in Dragon Age 2 (excluding 2H), they were pleasing to look at and they looked as if they were done with finesse and precision, so maybe take a look at that and see what they did right.

You are comparing this game to Dragon Age 2? This is an online game. Dragon Age 2 is game that barely sold half of what the first game sold. I’m following development on DA3 and they are dropping those animations because the majority hated them.

You really should compared another online game to skills and not a single player RPG.

In all fairness I think DA2’s issues were well beyond simple animations. Also I’m not sure why GW2 being an online game automatically excludes comparing its animations or graphics to single player games. But with that all said I really don’t have any issues with the animations.

It’s very time consuming and maybe not hardware friendly to have the highest of high quality animations for millions of players. That’s why you can’t compare. It’s 1 guy vs. thoustand of players.

This ^. If we had epic animations and styling the lag from blood, skills, would make the game barely playable. In anion when there was around 1000 players at a fort, you had to pretty much turn off every graphic option just to get the somewhat less lag. In an RPG its important to have style and interesting animations, along with incredible scenery to make you money worth it. Because there’s usually little chance of an expansion, or improvement. When the game comes out it sells as thought it is at its 100% point, or polished and ship status. In an MMO we have updates, and expansions, and they try to tweak things slowly to keep us entertained or interested. An RPG has 1 shot, that’s it. You either buy it or don’t.

The games animation is definitely lacking.

Look at females swinging a scepter. Looks like itstheir first time using the scepter.

And the elite skills don’t have a very elite animation.

I think the animations are supposed to be more realistic than flashy. But I guess they could work on some basic weapon animations.

shrug I like the animations. I like how my Sylvari girls hold their greatswords like they can barely lift them. That’s how it should be, those swords are huge!

Realism is good, but I think too much realism isn’t good. After all, this is a fantasy game, which isn’t real. A bit of flashyness wouldn’t hurt. This reminds me of when my brother argued how hollywood fighting scenes seem so fake, but it is definitely more flashy, and thats what appeals to a wider audience.

I gotta agree, most animations were very boring imo, and definitely didn’t look like your character is good at using the weapons.

I like the animations. I personally think they are very fluid and well done. I also like combat a lot. In fact I like combat in this game probably the most out of most mmos. The fast characters feel fast, and the slower ones feel slow. I played WoW again for a few weeks after not playing it for a couple of years before GW2 launched, and it was just gross. It was so clunky and odd looking, I couldn’t log in anymore.

Ya I didn’t take into consideration hardware limitations sorry about that, and this is basically the only MMO I play so I can’t compare. It will never change so I’ll just have to get used to it.

When you’re making an MMO, you think of hardware limitations.
Of all the MMOs i’ve been playing since 2005, this one has been the smoothest looking yet in animations and graphics.

And please don’t compare MMORPGs to single player RPGs in terms of animations and combat.

Can’t say I’ve really seen many animations I disliked (maybe my Charr Ranger’s evade animation while stationary) but I think my favorite might be Asura mesmers with their greatsword. I love how they look like they’re dragging it around and how they flop it onto their shoulder to carry it.

While I can definitely empathize, is making the animations flashier really going to solve anything?… You’re just going to say “these animations are boring, I want flashier ones!” 6 months down the line, and then Anet sighs and adds more sparkly effects, and 6 months further along you say the same thing, and then eventually they just give up and turn Guild Wars into Dragonkitten.

I don’t know. I like my ranger animation. She turns her bow in different directions for different shots. Her running/walking doesn’t seem weird to me.

If I’m in combat though, I’m generally not looking at my character animations. I looking at my health and my opponent’s health. As long as theirs is lower than mine, I’m good.

Are you nuts? The animations are superior. Don’t forget that you can change the animations in the graphics menu (ok, maybe it’s just the effects, don’t know). Just take the asura, they have absolutely great animation. I never had the feeling of ‘bad’ animation? What do you expect then? Animations like in Devil May Cry or what?

The only one that bugs me is the Male Norn’s animation for auto-attacking with a Sword as a Guardian/Warrior.

I can do thirty Five-Dolyak Arm Curls.

It doesn’t matter one bit if it’s online, the client does the rendering same way as an offline game. Secondly, character animations don’t make rendering all that harder, every frame is redrawn with the character in a different pose anyway so it really doesn’t matter which sequence of poses is drawn.

So true, just like Ride the Lighning, I love it. Honestly, I never played an MMO with better animations. Sure there are some games with stupidly sick and good animations like the Final Fantasy Games but this ain’t a single player game.

It matter’s plenty when you have every player on screen

you think are problems with culling are bad now, just emagin if the animations were bumped up and a mid level PC had to Render all that stuff.

Ride the Lightning doesn’t have a character animation but yes the effect is rather good.

I love how my character’s hair (!!!) interract with the animation of Drake’s Breath for example, little details that make the animations look awesome.

I wonder OP do you have animation set on max?
