Q:

Two days ago a friend and I played toghether, we were in Devona’s rest server. Now that I want to play for some reason he’s logged in on another server/world and if we want to play toghether I need to enter as a guest or pay 500 diamonds to transfer to that world.

What happpened and is there a way to play toghether or change server if we create new accounts or something?

Servers only matter if you plan to do WvW. Just create a party together and you should join the same map. If not, right click their name and choose to join them on the map.

What if it doesn’t show the option to join them on the map when I right click their name? does it mean that we’re on the same place?

It means that one of you isn’t on the same map. So one of you could be in Queensdale and the other could be in Kessex Hills. I can’t think of any other thing that would prevent you from joining each other’s map instances.

You’ll know if you’re on the same map instance if their picture isn’t that black silhouette.

You have to already be on the same map to get the join option, all it does is move you to the same copy of that map.

In case you’re not aware in GW2 all PvE maps are shared between servers, but those servers are capable of running multiple copies of each map. Which is good because it means if 500 people all want to be in the same one the game can share them between 5 maps so it’s not too crowded and doesn’t cause (as much) lag. But it means meeting up with friends can be tricky because you can go to the same place and still not find each other. That’s where the ‘join in…’ option becomes useful.

So in summary:
1) Form a party with the person you want to meet up with.
2) Go to the same ‘physical’ location in the game world.
3) If you can’t see each other one of you should right click the picture in the party window and choose ‘join in [map]’.

If you’re in the same area of the game (like Diessa Plateau for example), but you don’t see the ability to join on their map, then you’re already on their map. However, if you’re not in the same area, it won’t show that option at all until you’re both in that area first.

Also, in-case it isn’t clear: when I use the word “area”, I’m referring to the place in the game you’re located (Diessa Plateau, Snowden Drifts, etc. would be “areas”.) When I say “map”, I mean the particular version of that area (Diessa, Snowden, etc.) that you’re in.

There are two data centers where account information is stored. One is in the United States and one is in Europe. The players from those different data centers can’t play together. Devonas Rest is an NA (United States) server. If your friend transferred to an EU server then you won’t be able to play together until one of you transfers to that data center. If you can’t party up ask him what the name of his server is to make sure it’s the same data center.

I would hope his friend would have told him if he’d gone and switched regions since they last met up.

But just in case it could be worth checking. Especially if the other stuff doesn’t work.

The only game mode where what server you are on vs your ability to party and play with your friends is wvw. Now other specific instances (such as fractals) may show a server beside your friends name, but that does not necessarily mean that’s the server they are on, just the specific instance they are in.

Wvw Relinkings (guest servers switching hosts) happen every 2 months on the last Friday of the month. The last relinking was Aug 26th, the next is Oct 28th. But of you dont wvw, you don’t have to worry about you or your friends server.

1 thing I have noticed though since wvw linkings have started, the instance most maps you port into, will most likely be filled predominatly with people from your wvw server, their host/guest as well as the servers they are fighting that week. But, in standard pve, because of mega server, there are no restrictions or a need to transfer servers in order to play with your friends.

You party with that friend and click join in instance.

Thanks to everyone who posted. You were right, we just needed to join the same party and join being on the same area. Also I dodn’t knew about the WvW stuff that HazyDaisy talked about, so thanks for that info.
