I am from the Tarnish Coast server, the un-offical GW2 RP server, and I love it.
RP, short for Role Play, is when players assume or represent the the current game-world is real, and participates in assuming a personalty and a personal story.

There are some who lash out on role players in GW2 for no other reason than just to be a huge misery to others.

I would argue the roleplayers make the GW2 servers feel alive, it certainly make the cities seem busy when player walk through them and making small talk.
When you look at the alternative of a normal non-rp server, you find that it’s dead. No one talks, and mapchat is reduce to “looking for groups”, trolls, and dead silence.

Roleplayers actually appreciate the story and world of the game, and should have some respect for making everything interesting.

What do you think?

EDIT: The subject is about RP, I have to make this clear because people are clearly confused.
IT IS NOT about potentially illegal sex-chat (aka ERP)
If you try to solicit sex via the internet/game you do not know the person’s age or sex, you clearly asking for trouble.

I think you should just ignore those people, and happily roleplay with the people that do like to do so.

We’re playing a MMO-RPG for what it’s worth most of the people complaining about roleplayers are kids that just want to spoil the fun for the people that just want to emerge in a world that isn;t their own.

People have very little understanding towards it.

I myself, don’t roleplay in that proportion that i feel the need to emerge into the world wholly but i wouln’t bash on someone for doing so.

It might be a worthwhile thing for arenanet to actually represent a roleplay server ’’officially’’
But i don’t know on what length it would hit the other servers population.

But, it’s nice to know some people appreciate guild wars submersive world like that.
I’d say people like you make the game great.

This is par for course for MMOs, so if you’re not used to it by now, you’ll get used to it eventually.
Roleplayers will always be seen on the weird side, simple as that.

I don’t roleplay, but I do like being on RP servers for immersion’s sake.

After trying RP in AoC, I stopped because I prefer tabletop, and I do not type fast enough for the interaction to feel natural. On the other hand, I have nothing against others RPing in an online game. I also try not to annoy anyone, including those who RP.

One of my tabletop RP friends has a T Shirt with the quote, “An armed society is a polite society.” Haters exist, but will only manifest that behavior when they can get away with it. There are rarely any real consequences for griefing in an online game. That is the problem.

I don’t RP either, but the last 3 MMO’s I’ve played, I ended up on RP servers. In my experience, the communities on RP servers tend to be more mature, helpful, and cooperative.

I’ve RPed sarcastically (“What are you guys talking about? What GAME? What do you mean ‘just a game’?? This isn’t a game! I can totally fall to my death here! YES, I’m afraid of heights!”), and have encountered maybe one person that did it back in GW1 (he spoke in Shakespearean for an entire mission), but otherwise haven’t encountered any on Dragonbrand. I would like to actually RP in-game, but am too bogged down with guild stuff to really have time. I actually thought about “retiring” my character after he helped take down Zhaitan, going back to Queensdale and taking up cooking, but that was before the guild stuff took over. Eh well. :T

RPers represent a relatively small population of the game. Then there are players like me who enjoy law and story but don’t actively RP. I consider myself an immersion player but not an RPer. I’m also on Tarnished Coast, which I chose because it’s the RP server.

People often ridicule or even hate that which they don’t understand. Learn to use the /ignore command and move on.

Because you’re never going to change the mind of those people who don’t get it…and there are enough people who do to build a wide community.

^ This exactly. I’ve busted out my RP skills on occasion, but I mainly chose TC as my server because other people RP.

Oh, and although RPers may represent a relatively small population they are certainly one of the most individually represented populations ^^ It seems like more than half the people on the forums are from TC, maybe that’s just because RPers are more invested in the game.

Either way, you can’t let the ignorance of others bother you, they don’t know what they’re missing.

Because RPers on an MMO are a bunch of godmodding morons who claim they are invincible. Or they are ERPing in /e near an event causing the Leroy npcs to die. RPers on MMOs are pretty comtemptable.

For those who dont know what godmodding is, an example:

HappyHippo: Dave was lounging by the window, waiting for his friends to arrive. He gazed out across the dark grounds, and sighed. They were all late, and he was getting bored.
Klaus65: Gina walked into the room, and saw Dave by the window. Quickly, she whipped out her wand, and cast a spell that killed Dave instantly.
HappyHippo: ((Hey!)) Dave dodged the spell. “Cut it out!” he yelled angrily, and sent his own curse Gina’s way, one that would make the girl sneeze repeatedly.
Klaus65: Gina was unaffected by the curse. Gina killed Dave.

This is how prejudice starts. Saying all RPers are the same. They’re all the same is the mark of every bigot who ever lived. Right next to “some of my best friends are”. It’s intolerance and bigotry and there’s no room for it here.

Half the time I agree- RPers do make the server more alive.

Then I see a human female in Divinity’s Reach say to another human female “You… you’re pregnant. I can smell the increased pheromones. It smells like… a girl!” and I suddenly feel the urge to log off, turn off my computer, and just go outside. Don’t care what I do when I get there, as long as its away from all technology. Forever.

Some people folks begin to realize how utterly silly their RPs can appear to other people. Even my little sister, when she was six, would be embarrassed to roleplay some of the “scenes” I’ve seen >_>

Either way, I don’t mess with the RPers or give them grief. I just shuffle along quietly to my next location.

That’s not a mark of anything at all, and you know that just as well as everyone who is reading this thread. You’re just taking a preemptive shot at anyone who does happen to have close friends who RP and don’t agree with your way of thinking, hoping that by making such an obviously incorrect assertion it will somehow validate your future claims that they are all “bigots” simply by saying “Told you so! Someone claimed to have an RPer friend! He’s a bigot!”.

tl;dr- No one is going to fall for that.

Totally untrue. Bigots stereotype entire groups of people and when called bigots, the first line of defense is “some of my best friends are ______”. It’s a way they attempt to justify their prejudice. It’s pretty well known, so no one has to “fall for it”. They teach it in classes on tolerance even.

If you’re not a bigot, then you don’t have to say some of my best friends are to justify your feelings. Because you’re not talking down about a group as a whole. The person I was replying to spoke about what “all” RPers are, and therefore, he’s stereotyping and therefore, displaying bigotry.

You may not like what I said, but a lot of people who have experienced prejudice would whole-heartedly agree with me.

What do you think?

It’s a tricky issue. I used to play table top RPGs (AD&D, Dark Conspiracy etc) and MMOs are something I got into about 7 years ago. The key difference is that with the old pen and paper games only your group of players exists in that game world, if you had hundreds of players you would have the same issues you do online. At conventions there was always someone who was fixated on their +9000 Vorpal Trousers at the expense of team work and dialogue.

Different RPers RP in very different ways. There are the god moders and there are those who try to re-use the setting (“This my fort!”, “No, this is my fort!”, “Uh guys, the sign says Vigil Keep”). That is always going to draw some ridicule even among other RPers. Now factor in that many of the other players around you are not RPers at all and you can see where these attitudes come from and over time can become the default response.

It is a shame when you do get a negative reaction though. I do enjoy it when I overhear an RP conversation, one on par with the dialogues we hear from some NPCs in passing. It adds colour to the world when done well and harms nobody. I do appreciate it and the respect you are seeking is the kind that should be given to all fellow gamers, you do your thing and I’ll do mine.

Personally I don’t type much or engage in ICC, on the rare occasions I do it’s often via mail or whisper. Which is ironic considering how much I enjoy the conversations I overhear. This and the ability to play musical instruments are the two things I miss most from LotRO.

I suppose the best middle ground option is to pick your locale. Outside the Fractals gate is probably not a hive of RP but there are so many great little pubs and dens just off the main drag. Aside from that, use /ignore for the most persistent cases and grow a thick hide to fend off the others. But step out around the crafting area once in a while, there might be a Norn having a quiet chuckle over what you said while he is tanning his latest kill.

I went on TC for a bit just to “experience” RPers for the first time. I was in wayfarer foothills leveling my mesmer, I see in chat “_ sits.” “_ sits.” So I thought I was gonna encounter roleplayers, I finally find them sitting in a little lake naked, female, blond, big breasts, you name it. They were talking about regrets in their life and how the warm water is getting them relaxed, they continue on to do the “emote” chat and touch each other. That’s when I logged off TC and went back to BG. No matter how much you guys say people are missing out on the immersion GW2 RPers bring…I can’t stand RPers. I felt that they just pretend to be girls all day and cyber each other. Yep….I was right.

So why do you guys get trolled? Everyone gets trolled? You are taking the game too seriously, if someone is trolling you, zone into LA/ heart of the mists, w/e and go offline. I guess that’s too immersion breaking for you.

Before charging for server change it took a week to change servers to hinder WvW server bandwagon problems.

This is why I firmly believe that EVE Online is the only MMO that really supports roleplaying. Instead of just typing about what your character does, you actually do it. I consider “roleplaying” that’s not backed up by rule or mechanics to be just talking funny and composing fan-fiction.

In most MMOs, you can say “I am Lord Awesome, General of the Black Legion, feared by all, blah blah”, but you still play the game in exactly the same way as everyone else—you run around and kill monsters and whatever. “Roleplaying” exists purely as an added layer of talking on top of the game.

Compare this to EVE, where you can actually do things you can only talk about in other games. You can be an admiral of a fleet of hundreds. You can be a trading tycoon and control the economy of large regions. You can be a pirate, preying on the weak and unprepared. You can be a diplomat that creates coalitions of thousands of players. You can be a mercenary who fights for the highest bidder. EVE’s mechanics actually allow you to do the things you want your character to do instead of just talking about them.

This is why I think most roleplaying in most MMOs is pointless. I instead prefer what I call “immersionism”. I try not to talk about out-of-world things, but I also don’t type whole paragraphs describing what my character is doing, because to me, that’s not roleplaying—that’s just talking funny and writing bad fan-fiction in realtime.

All that said, I don’t insult or otherwise pester people who chose to do so.

See, that story I just don’t believe…

So you logged onto TC after spending the money, and spent more to jump back…
and if you are going to say it was BEFORE the charge for server change it still wrong.

Before charging for server change it took a week to change servers to hinder WvW server bandwagon problems.

Not me I’m no RPer but I love the RP community. Ever since experiencing that community on LOTRO I’ve preferred it because they seem to have great manners and help people who need it with everything. They sometimes even are very generous people with their time. That’s why I’m there to avoid the nasty WoW-esc crowd with their gimme-everything-and-get-out-of-my-way attitude I’ve experienced in every gaming community that’s had dungeons or pvp as the focus.

Rrrright. Your whole story and attitude is the problem.

Yup I saw what I saw, believe me or not. Using guesting before you question how someone else uses it. I hate RPers attitude towards the whole MMO community. I think it’s better for table tops/instances or:

NERO is hardly the same thing as what’s in mmo’s seriously lumping those people together with RPers in mmo’s is like saying that walkers for causes to raise money are the same as marathon runners. Two totally different sets of people.

It’s probably because the "ERP"ers ruin it for the normal ones by making everyone uncomfortable and generally creeping them out. :s In the end it can’t be helped.
This is why you can’t have nice things: Bad people corrupt them and make bad stereotypes.

I went on TC for a bit just to “experience” RPers for the first time. This thread has taken a strange direction, but for the record, Lunar’s story is legit. I myself popped over to TC from Maguuma a few nights ago just to see what it was like. It really is as simple as clicking a button. And when you log out, it automatically brings you back to your home server. There are no holes in this story.

But yes, certain seedy and/or awkward elements of the RP community tend to over-represent and paint an unappealing image of said community as a whole. That’s just… a reality of every community. I assumed RPers would be well aware of the stigma against them.

Its kinda sad there is no official RP server. I have always went to the RP servers not because I RP but because I have always had an interest in the Lore and the way RP’rs living up a community. I was disappointed to see RP was not encouraged or was given a home among the GW2 servers.

It was been a few weeks since I began my journey through the game and I am not impressed. There is no… thickness to the story or the game… Being an old GW player, I was excited to see a GW2…

I really dislike that the Gem store getting priority development. Guess content/class balance/pvp balance/bug fixes will always get the back burner with a business model like this. Now I see why sub based MMOs have good (lore)story lines. You pay for class balance/lore(content)/bug fixes not for dyes or gold.

That is the funniest thing I’ve ever heard in my life. the only and I stress ONLY leetist group i have ever encounters in every mmo or mp game i’ve ever played are the gear treadmill/dungeononly/raidonly crowd EVER. Seriously, you must have encountered a single rare kitten in a iceberg of diamonds to say that because every RPer larper and even Nero players have all been very kind to me, EVEN a satanist I once new was kinder then any of the dungeoneers/raiders I’ve met in my time.

That’s what I’m guessing they too aren’t lumped in with the RP crowd like so many here have done in this thread. It’s so hilarious when people can’t tell the difference between RPers and ERPers, smh, bigotry exists even in mmo’s I guess.

How many people on Tarnished Coast are vampires? I hate vampire RPers with a passion, except in settings where there ARE vampires, where I tolerate them and sometimes even join in.

I just realised there seem to be a confusion between roleplayers who exercise their fantasies according to the game elements. And people who seem to enjoy cyber fondling.

Until people can distinguish the two, this thread isn’t going anywhere.

I’ve been playing MMOs for over 12 years and I’ve just encountered way too many emote sex chats over the years to not be super creeped out whenever someone mentions roleplayers.

I’ll never forget thinking that a roleplay server might be fun and interesting in WoW, only to find it full of… well you know :\ A word of advice- never go into an Inn or any place with a bed on a roleplay server.

I’m a roleplayer myself, or used to be back when job and career didn’t mean so much to me, but why do people not see that RP is just a theater and everything people do is acting?

Sex is a big part of real life, why should it not also be a part of RP?

Anyways, that’s off topic. RPers can do whatever they want and if you are too narrow minded and too scared or too insecure that you need to hate on other people to maintain a sort of selfworth you shold just go do something meaningful in life or read more books and analyze yourself!

Please respect your fellow man (and woman)!

I think a decent amount of the animosity towards roleplaying comes directly from what Rekia described above. For all the term ‘ERP’ describes, ERP is to roleplaying what porn is to film-making. Sadly, a large portion of players considers them one and the same.

Unfortunately, I’ve never played in any online RP setting that didn’t have its share of people who used it for their variety of cyber.

However, that being said, I’ve actually found Tarnished Coast to be one of the most pleasant communities for roleplay that I’ve encountered (the best being a toss up between Landroval in Lord of the Rings Online, and Virtue in City of Heroes). I’ve seen very little anti-RP sentiment in general.

If there is a server or guild officially or unofficially dedicated to something, people will show up just to grief them. Usually they don’t even have a problem with the activity itself – they just want to grief, and will go where they can do it most effectively. I know about this sort of thing – I was an officer and then leader of a WoW guild known for its Christian values. We had people who would create a fake online profile, spend a couple weeks in the guild pretending, then wait til no officers were online and grief guild chat saying the most horrible things. It’s sad really, that these people have nothing better to do with their time.

My turret is so much better at this game than I am.

Allow me to take a moment to pontificate that most you, in fact, nay, mostly everyone alive these days, was brought up on a lie. A terribly perverted and insidious lie: Everyone needs to respect everyone. Everyone needs to respect you, and you need to respect everyone.

No they don’t, and no you don’t. Respect isn’t even something you can give or take freely. Respect is an emotional response. It’s something you gotta earn. You don’t simply decide to be afraid or to love someone, and you don’t decide to respect them either. You can say you do, but that doesn’t mean any more than saying you love someone you don’t.You can say it, but it’s not true.

“But you gotta respect…” Why? No you don’t. Nothing happens. Especially not in an online game. It’s not like someone says “you’re stupid” and suddenly your account gets deleted. Or your fully exotic level 80 gets re-geared in whites. You don’t wake up with leprosy. Nobody has to like you, and you don’t need anybody to like you either.

See, personally I don’t much like RPing. In my view, it’s awkward and juvenile. But I’m not about to stop you doing it either, so long as you don’t try to force me to play along. I’ll probably crack a few private jokes with some friends, but you won’t see me jump in your RPing going “U ALL kitten M8S!11!” or whatever is the current fashionably delinquent insult. Because… why would I? There’s nothing in it for me.

Some people, however will go “that extra mile”. They will jump in and shout, whine and kitten… They will be “rude”. Who the kitten cares? I’m serious, why would you care? The people who do that are not doing so because they are legitimately interested in informing you of their opinion. They’re crazy people who want attention. If you were walking down the street and saw a dirty guy with ragged clothes and the acrid stench of alcohol loudly spouting bigotry and racism in the middle of the street for no apparent reason, you wouldn’t stop and engage in a conversation with them would you? You’d just walk by without even registering it. At most you’d go “Some people really have kittened up their lives haven’t they” inside your head and carry on with your day. Why would you change the rules of engagement here?

So someone says something you deem “rude”. So kittening what? Ignore them. Don’t interact with them. There is no PKing in this game, and they can’t even body block you. They are literally powerless to affect you in any way. Let’em be the ignorant kittenheads you honestly think they are and just go about your life. You’ll live happier the second you realize you don’t have to like or be liked by everyone you meet.
