The problem with this is that if there wasn’t a gear progression a lot of people would say there is no endgame.
If there is, a lot of people will cry about it.
That’s why they found a middle ground, they give us a tier between Exo and Lege that needs to be aquired by doing content (while exotic can be merely bought).

This will not be reverted or they would incur again into the “no endgame” critic, nor will be extended or they will incur in the opposite critic.
Anet found a good spot to be, it ain’t going to change guys. It won’t change.
If you can’t bear it play another game.

One of the major GW2 selling points was that you ll be able to get the best gear in many different ways: buy, loot, karma, tokens, crafting. That has since been reduced to doing one dungeon over and over. Now they ll partially revert it back to doing stuff in the open world aswell and many of the “progression” crybabies ll start crying again because everyone ll be able to be just as powerful as they are.

So no this is not a good spot for ANET to be. They ve already lost much faith with their existing community and now by reverting the “endgame” partially to what it was they ll loose even more support. You cannot cater to everyone and that s exactly what ANET is trying to do, even to the extent on giving up on their promises and visions.

As for the last sentence: why didnt the whiners that demanded “progression” and “endgame” go play another game instead of bearing with it?

“Otherwise, your MMO becomes all about grinding to get the best gear. We don’t make grindy games.”

Warhammer had a good model for PvE gear gating and progression: the “PVE STAT”.

Vaguely similar to “Agony”, all gear had a PvE tier rating in Warhammer that had a significant adjustment to damage output and intake. Every item slot where your “ward level” was too low for the PvE content, you dealt 10% less damage and took 10% more damage (up to 50% more damage taken and -50% damage output, with 5 under-tier armor slots).

This enables gated PvE gear tiers / progression without affecting PvP.

The other option is to correctly remove WvW from the PvE gear context, enabling sPvP gear only for WvW.

And that is why WvW players have and will leave the game.

I just want the game I was advertised for 7 years, instead of this stupid Korean grindfest garbage.

Any sort of hardcoded gear gating in PvE is a terrible idea. Agony mechanics is a very unimaginative and cheap way to increase difficulty. Much better idea would be to improve mob AI and introduce new behaviours with the new fractal levels.
