I have server Anxity and Depression and try to live with it on a day to day basis the current jumping puzzle that is setting me off is the one above the canopy in verdant Brink to grab the mastery there. I get to a certain point ( normal 3-4 jumps away from reaching it) and start panicking and I mess up and I’m left to start again from a lower point or having to go from the Broken bluffs waypoint as I got stuck with no way out. I’m wanting to know if I’m the only one who get’s anxiety spikes on these puzzles or if any one else gets them.

You’re not the only one, that jumping puzzle was hard once i got the 1st time that i needed the mastery. Now that i don’t need it, feels pretty easy to get there >.>

I don’t really get the anxiety or depression that you are describing but that particular JP you mention did have it’s moments and problems.

All I can really suggest to do is what I did. Jump on my Mesmer and place portals where I usually had trouble. Doing this gives you another shot at that particular spot if you manage to land somewhere safe enough to place another portal to go back to your last spot.

If you have a Mes alt I would def suggest giving that a shot!.

Good luck.

I used to get them, but fortunately they have been less and less the better I learned to jump in this game. What helped (and still helps) me a lot is to not go into those puzzles alone, but bring a mesmer friend, and preferably go in as a mesmer myself, too.

The one in VB I conquered in team with my youngest daughter, with our two asura mesmers. Whenever one of us fell, the other one would portal her back to the place where she fell off. Those last few jumps on that one are rather tricky, and it took us several tries each (and a good bit of patience to wait for our portals to get off cooldown ), but eventually we made it up there and both felt great.

If you don’t have a friend or guildie interested in teaming up with you on this you might find somebody in map chat. Or whisper me if you see me online and happen to be on an EU server, I like to redo jps occasionally especially since they aren’t particularly easy for me but good fun with company that goes at a similar pace.

tbh Fade To black it’s every single jumping puzzle just that’s the one that has my anxiety WAY up there to almost cause a panic attack.

tbh Fade To black it’s every single jumping puzzle just that’s the one that has my anxiety WAY up there to almost cause a panic attack.

I will give you a few more tips if it truly is every JP that gives you these issues:

1 – Get comfortable with jumping. A good way to do this is to do what I crazily do sometimes when bored or tired for some silly reason. That is jump everywhere! Don’t walk or run, just jump, I am serious lol. In no time you will have mastered exactly how jumping works and be so in synch to how your char moves when jumping.

Use the environment to test yourself while doing this. See a fence with a gate open? Try jumping from one side to the other. There are lots of things in the world you can try like this to sort of make your own mini JP’s and practice your skills.

2 – Change your “a” and “d” keys to strafing and not turning, those functions are redundant in these games and only work against you. Next you want to master the art of “jumping sideways”, that is strafe jumping. In many JP’s it is easier to get up to the next spot by jumping sideways than it is jumping forward while moving. This is especially true for some of the more chunkier classes such as Norn and Charr. Also not to forget to mention how annoying the camera can be at times even when you have all the best camera settings chosen.

3 – If your char has any speed buffing traits or skills (usually signets) equipped you may not want to use them. Likewise with and speed increasing skills. Temporarily disable them until you have mastered jumping as you can then train yourself how to master jumping with speed buffs. I have been here since the beginning of this game and do have all JPs done except for the mad kings clocktower. However even with all that experience with jumping, speed buffs can still catch me out at times if I have not done a JP in a while. A good example was yesterday as I had to complete the Iron Pig Mine JP for an item for a collection. Had not done that JP in a while and had a few mishaps. I remembered to disable my speed signet and bang, instance fix, I easily completed the JP.

4 – If you have issues of accidently dodging at times you may also want to temp disabling double tapping to dodge while doing JPs. In my early days here I used to do that as I guess the anxiety did hit me a little then and I would hit dodge by accident a lot. I don’t have that issue anymore as I now have my dodge set to mouse wheel click and that is a lot harder to accidently set off lol.

Again I wish you luck!

I managed it but I think I gained it more as a glitch then actual jumping. Moved to a new map and it droped me ontop of the mastery point O_O./ Still I’ll give the jumping every where trick a try XD. Thanks for all the help.

I’m always scared of jumping puzzles because I start to dread the terrible camera system and often floaty controls that makes this game NOTHING like a good 3D platformer like Mario games.

If you want a portal, I’m happy to jump it and port you up there, if you’re on a US server. Just message me in game. If’ I’m not busy with the guild I’d be happy to help. Sorry you’re getting stressed…it can be sort of stressful.

I have the same problem, which is why I made a mesmer and took my time going through it. Portal and mimic are useful as a sort of a savestate sort of tool if you’re set on doing it yourself.

As a 48 year old with Myasthenia Gravis (which translates to slow, fumbling fingers at times), I can definitely relate to jumping puzzle anxiety.

There are tools and skills that can definitely help, but I’ve found what helps me is the most is simply taking my time. It’s almost like therapy for me now, exercise for my brain and fingers. I refuse portals that mesmers off to the top because I want to to the whole thing on my own, I want that exercise.

I used to worry about jumping puzzles, especially the big ones, now I look forward to them when they’re in dailies.

Lots of good tips here but I wanted to add leap skills can be a huge asset for particularly tough jumps. Thief’s staff 5 is a low cooldown leap that lets you pretty much point your mouse where you want to land and end up there.

I have fear of heights and with games nowadays having much better graphics and depth in them this fear of heights also affects me in game. It started with a game called Unreal Tournament where some maps were on top of skyscrapers and such and falling off was certain death for your character.

So for me these things are really challenging. Sweating hands and all that, but I do push myself to prove that I can do it. So yeah, it can be challenging but I managed just the same.

It’s a game forum. The truth is not to be found here.

I can’t stand jumping puzzles – they are the thing I hate the most in this game because so many things are gated by them. If I wasn’t missing out on a lot of things because of them, I wouldn’t care about them at all and would go about my gaming very happy.

Some players talk about practice – I play games for leisure, not to work at them as though I was back at school or at my job. I don’t have anything against skills getting better as you play – my jumping has improved over the years of playing this game just from getting to Vistas and stuff. But JP can be so difficult for me that it would require many hours of practice for me to complete even one that is slightly harder than most people call “easy”.

A lot of people talk about getting someone to port you, but I feel bad asking guildies to go out of their way to do this. I shouldn’t have to feel like a beggar to play a game.

I don’t get anxiety and I’ve never been diagnosed with depression. I also really enjoy jumping puzzles. But even I find them stressful, and that one was especially bad!

The main thing that helps me (as long as it’s not a timed puzzle) is taking breaks. When I catch myself getting stressed and nervous, and especially if it’s making me rush things, I’ll stop for a bit. Sometimes I’ll just join in guild chat or quickly check Facebook. Other times I’ll actually get off the computer for a bit and do something else until I’ve calmed down. Then I’ll come back to it.

As far as actually being able to make the jumps I think the main thing is practice. I was really, truly terrible at them when I first started playing. But then I kept practicing – not just in puzzles, just trying to climb the scenery in random places helps learn what you can and can’t stand on, how far your character can jump and tricks like jumping around a corner.

Now, 4 years on, I go back to some of the puzzles I remember being an absolute nightmare and they’re not too bad. I even did Dark Reverie (the nightmare court one) on my first try a few weeks back!

Thing is my no means am I new player to GW just JP’s can be pretty hard for some one with Dyspraxia and Anxiety when one or the other could trigger from something small. Might finish getting all the mastiers I can from the HOT content then go round the map doing jp’s just so I’m not as shaky etc.

I find that mild anxiety causes me to fumble on particularly testing JPs. It’s a vicious cycle, because I can feel myself getting worked up and know that it’s going to affect my jumping ability.

It’s much better if I complete the JPs with my partner. For really difficult ones we both go on our mesmers and use portalling to our advantage as a way to “save our progress”. Knowing that our work isn’t going to be completely undone by one mis-step is a great way to reduce that anxiety.

Take breaks and distance yourself too. If you feel yourself getting worked up, watch something relaxing and take your mind off of it. Leave yourself where you are and switch to another character.

I’ve also gotten a lot better since I accepted that I could always use a Teleport to Friend if it got really bad, or ask nicely for a mesmer portal in map chat or LFG. I’ll resort to Teleport to Friends pretty quickly if I can predict myself getting frustrated or panicky within the next couple of tries. I don’t see it as giving up, I recognise that I’ve given it my best shot at that time and allow myself to continue to something much more enjoyable. Accept help if you need it- the players around here are almost always very kind and willing to help. And if I feel like I’ve inconvenienced somebody for dropping a portal, I’ll send them a tip of a few gold. It’s a win-win!

I’ve spent a bit of time on that JP and I’ve gotten close but haven’t quite made it to the end. For me I don’t really have that much anxiety. For me JPs are just massively frustrating. I’m just not good at JPs. That one frustrates the crap out of me. It also bothers me when people propose getting good at JPs as the solution. It’s not going to happen. Easy ones I can do fine but most just frustrate me to no end. It just doesn’t make sense to spend that much time and frustration on something I don’t enjoy.

Zephyr’s Ascent is another one I’ve spent a lot of time on but never completed. There’s one jump in that one that just seems impossible to me.

I’m not a huge fan of JP and they are more difficult for me when there’s a crowd or if I’m taking someone through one I can easily do, alone.

And please think of your fellow players at JPs. Turn off your minis, pets, hide you backpacks (such as wings). It’s crowded enough on small platforms as it is without bears, wyverns or moas joining in.

I too can get quite stressed out on some jumping puzzles, mainly because I am terrible at them. Be sure to take advantage when one pops up as a daily, because there will frequently be kind mesmers porting people to the end on those days. I’ve finished loads of the JP achievements that way.

A stack of cheap Quaggan tonics helped my big fat Norn through plenty of annoying jumps.

I’ve tried that, but I find that the quaggan “tilts” over to a ludicrous angle when there’s even a slight unevenness to what you’re standing on. If there is another shrinking tonic that can help my fat charr characters through jumps, do let me know lol.

It’s actually gotten quite funny. There are usually so many mesmers that the top of a puzzle is a pool of purple half the time. Daily JP’s are some of the most fun I’ve had with my mesmer in a long time.
