As you may very well know, it’s impossible to place superior runes on Masterwork (the highest obtainable underwater breather level) items. It’s not an issue in PvP of course, but I’d like my 6th rune slot to function underwater rather than not be there at all in PvE/WvW. I haven’t seen any discussion on this and the search function failed to bring up past threads, so I thought if start a discussion and remind ANet about the underwater breathers they seemingly forgot about after launch.

EDIT: Apparently my Gavbeorne’s breather just sucks and won’t take superior runes ;-;

I saw a dev post in the “help” forums about sticking another superior rune on your underwater breather, so I bought several cheap Superiors to test it, and attempted to place them on my Gavbeorne’s Underwater Breather of the Afflicted (level 80 masterwork) to no avail.

You can actually place superior runes on the best aqua breathers.

Yet another instance of Ruby Orb’s superiority!

I placed plenty of exotic sigils on my masterwork weapons already. Why would rebreathers be different?

The ones you get from the karma merchant in Cursed Shore. Maybe you have a bugged aqua breather? It should work with all runes.

No <.< I meant rune. I have 5 runes of Lyssa sitting in my bank that I attempted this on.

Maybe try getting another aqua breather from the collector and add a rune to it then?

I don’t see how you guys have trouble with this, I have a superior rune on my Gavebeorne breather.

Between one monthly carnival and one temporary minigame, they’ll add exotic aquabreathers… Eventually… Maybe…

But yeah, I would like Exotic Aquabreathers. Right now we’re stuck unable to choose a prefix and lesser stat points underwater.. Then again, underwater combat is already so kitteny a few stat points wouldn’t make any difference.

I never had trouble with this, and yes I have put a superior rune in my breather.

I got several Gavebeorne breathers with superior runes on them. I’ve been waiting for a long time to get exotic breather, it would be cool to have some nice skins for them also. Good thing I’m not holding my breath cause it almost seems that Anet forgot that breathers were in the game.

All of my alts which have Gavbeorne’s Underwater Breather have superior runes in them. Not sure why OP’s one can’t? o_O

We need the ability to craft rare and exotic beathers. It would at least make crafting professions have something worthwhile to craft without finding a dungeon equivalent for free.

Should just remove aqua breathers and let us use our helmets underwater. Can continue to display a breather graphic on the character if ‘necessary’. Currently there is really no support for aqua breathers in the game and they are just annoying (and probably confusing to some regarding armor rune bonuses).

Aqua breathers go in the same bin as mounts, dueling and a lot of other things for me. No, no, no!!

The first thing I do when I hit 80 is head down to Gavebeorn for his breather. The second thing I do is put a superior rune in it to match the rest of my armor. Of course you can use the best runes in Masterwork items.

edit: would like an exotic aquabreather though. that would be nice.

I don’t see why anet don’t just remove aqua breathers and say the oxygen content of the water in tyria is breathable.

I have a superiror soldier rune on my water breather.

I got my breather from karma in Orr.

Superior runes are level 60. My breather is a green, I think level 76.

Did they change things and mine didn’t break? All my underwater shouts remove conditions.

I would like to just be able to craft them.

Did you take the breather off before you tried to put the rune inside? I just noticed this week that this is necessary for back-items… so maybe it counts for the breather as well. I know that I’ve put my superior rune inside my breather before I equipped it and I think many people (maybe all of those that already posted here?) did so… so yeah… try to unequip the breather and then put the rune inside.

No I did not, I’ll have to try that when I get back to my computer.

I just tried to put a rune it works. I didn’t actually put it cause it wasn’t worth it but I got up to the confirmation dialog

Yeah, slap even a cheap one in there if you want. It’s better then no rune.

…keep in mind though: that the Rune has NO EFFECT when on land, even when its hover-text claims that it’s counting with the ones on the rest of your Gear.

Higher rarity would be nice but more important would stat sets.

I know that. I’m just unable to place any rune on my breather (Gavebeorn karma breather from Orr). I will however try to unequip it and see if that’s my issue.
