I hate encountering other players out in the world. They steal all my nodes and tag all my mobs.

It’s more the fact that I dislike that nothing is a challenge anymore and the atmosphere is kind of ruined for me. Is a newer player I find it hard to even “tag” mobs before the level 80 players nuke everything in the event and I dont get participation.

If I wanted to join a guild I would have no way of knowing who was from my server and meeting people to join with.

Sense of community is gone, and it feels like instead of a challenging experience with group events – it is a competition to see who can tag enough mobs before they no longer exist to get experience. That is the new challenge I guess. How rewarding.

it’s hard even for 80s to get mobs tagged, as they fall so fast now. in the harathi hinterlands chain I used to loot 40-60 bags from centaurs before the megaserver. now I’m glad if I get 20 – despite being one of these 80s doing considerable damage, the mobs are dead before I can hit them. I’m pretty sure they’ll change the way crit damage scales in lower zones eventually. first it didn’t work at all, now it works too well, I guess the next time they address it will bring it somewhere to the middle (probably in the next few months).

as for community – being from a nearly empty, language specific server (german millersound) I like megaserver in most places. I often guested to english servers because they have people and I don’t really care which (somewhat) foreign language I speak ;-) scaling aside, it feels great to actually see people at events again. I don’t mind soloing some of them (golem mark 2!) but for others it’s nice to have someone around.

my only concern is how communities scattered over multiple guilds will get together. now we guest to an empty server and kill the wurm. with megaserver on bloodtide coast, I have no idea how we will manage. even after the scaling changes tries have failed if we had to many people not on teamspeak and following the leads. with megaservers our commis can’t even decide on an empty server so at least the teamspeak people do get in first.

I know that’s a DIRTY WORD in MMO-land, but honestly the megaservers are killing the game in a way that server merges could never hope to do. Nobody wants to play a game where tagging mobs is impossible, where doing guild missions is like waiting in the queue at the post office, and where I hear nothing but hate speech because someone dared to type to map chat in a language that isn’t english

I’ve been to Tokyo and I can say that it doesn’t even nearly feel as overcrowded as Moscow simply because the infrastructure is superior.

The point of my analogy: if ANet managed players distribution as effectively as Tokyo does (by sorting languages, grouping guilds, maintaining server population, randomising boss events), then it wouldn’t have ever felt “overcrowded” even if it was.

Because the servers aren’t exactly empty, they are populated but some are busier than others, meaning if any expansion comes out or any other kind of content that bring players back, the merged servers will crash.

It is a way to ensure population in the zones and give Anet the chance to release new ones, that’s what Colin said. Anet have been, for a long time, worried and unsure about how to introduce new areas to GW2 as they didn’t want the old areas and cities to be ghost-towns. This system will make it possible to make new areas and still, the old ones will most probably always have a decent population.

Without tweaks in the current system they will always have an overpopulation, actually. These ‘uberoverflows’ will not allow for any breathing space, no matter the number of zones. For as long as there will be enough players to entirely fill a single zone, they will get crammed into it.

It wasn’t a server populations problem, it was a map population issue. Some maps just didn’t get that much traffic.

It’s also a way of future proofing the game for when they open new zones this year and the older ones will naturally have less traffic.

For the record I’m loving Megaserver tech. Needs a couple tweaks but it’s a very good change to see a city like Hoelbrak be a bustling metropolis.

They should probably add a new cap cause as you meantion, most people are reporting GW2 areas to be ‘’tokyo populated’’. Perhaps they should tweak the cap later when new areas actually get released and older ones get emptier.

This might be crazy, but I don’t mind empty mid-level zones as long as the server population itself is healthy. For me, megaservers are not healthy when they destroy server communitites.
It’s not our fault that nobody wants to do anything in some zones. That just means they’re boring. Maybe Anet should make zones worth going back to instead of forcing us into megaservers.

Well…they added it to Sparkfly…effectively killing a server teq kill…. Just as a I predicted It was a hot mess filled with casuals who refused to listen to tag. I tried to join another “megaserver overflow” but they were equally failing. I like the idea of megaservers for SOME desolate areas…however…the opportunity for teq comes up only 3 times a day. And there is a reason why you need to be able to guarantee who is going to show up for a kill. The normal server I kill teq on downed Teq by 6 mins. From what i gather the normal people who organized the server kill failed teq with casuals too. Its a good idea for some maps. Just not all of them. Also… they promised that you would be able to join with your guild and world. Funny story about that. The overflow server( im going to refer to it as such since its just overflows without a fancy tag on the minimap) was capped and i ended up being whisked away to some other overflow unable to meet up with my guild. This is honestly a very crude and messy setup probably to justify dying server populations as I’ve encountered more bad than good from this

Excellent idea! Push this one to the top.

I’ve been trying to use the Join feature, and I haven’t seen it available. That might just be from overpopulation in the destination area, but I find it a little disconcerting that the option isn’t there when I need it.

I only have two problems with the mega server….
The first is: it’s too busy for your average wilderness… When I’m walking through the mountains, I don’t want to see a dozen people in real life (and our European mountains are tame compared to the areas in Tyra!), so why would I enjoy it in game? I rather like to come across somebody now and again instead of following in line…

The over population caused by the mega server was a bad idea as there is no middle of road limit for the amount of people allowed in each one, this causes the game to be unplayable for those that do not have the best computers on the market.

How is it that not one company out there does not think about us poorer players?

The company should have worked on making the game more optimized and not worry about vacant maps.

The better solution was to have players that needed help on dead maps to go get help from “casual content” friendly guilds. That is, if those said players actually tried hard enough to get help.

Problem with WvW is that there are only 4 areas, and they can all 4 be full. Besides, I doubt the WvW community would like if half the players would just hang around, chatting :P

Hello everyone, ladies and gentlemen, and especially to players
that are on the European world servers, “bonjour” from France !

Yes, I’m a french player, present on Tyria since the open beta access,
it makes now about 2 years, and I was on GW 1 since april 2005…
9 years on Tyria for a videogames player, that’s not nothing.

Sorry for my English typewriting, I have simply learned at school
about 30 years now, because I’m not young, the man here is 43 years old.

…So, I see here, with lot of a despite too, that this megaservers system,
with that great mix on all the maps, with people coming from all the
european servers, makes exactly the same kind of problems on the
official GW2 french forum, regrouping no less than 5 “worlds” [FR] servers ;

I read these days ingame, on the various maps channels that’s the same thing,
the same feeling, for the [DE] german, and for the [SP] spanish players, and,
of course, with all the players that are on all the international english speaking servers !

Yes, there are actually a lot of players complaining about that massive and general mix,
now on all the maps, without respecting of the language used by our “native” world
servers, that should be the criteria number one, and the exclusive one for that system.

We have and express all the same problems, from here and beyond all frontiers,
that’s really international.

So, please, ArenaNet Team, take in consideration of all that problems caused expressed
on the official forums in the various communities, especially for the non-english
speaking (and/or reading/writing) players that are actually on Tyria.
Some of them even are actually expressing that they are not interested at all by
that concept, leaving GW 2 for the benefit of other video games (MMO or not),
because they initially chose GW2 for that spirit of community servers that some
of them, among the more ancients in Tyria, already knew and appreciated from
the Guild Wars 1 server system.

I was even surprised, and with some old game friends, at the beginning of GW 2,
that the genius system and interface for server’s tongue and continental zone
choice (even including the Asian, with Chinese, Corean, and Japan tongues),
was not the initial system retained for Guild Wars 2.

Thank you very much for your comprehension,
and sorry again for involuntary mistakes of my english
typewriting, I guess that I’m at low level for that.

Best regards, hope that troubles will be resolved soon by the ArenaNet Team,
counting too on a good and clever communities managers communication,
for the returning of international peacefull and friendship between the players,
and for the spirit of gaming just for fun !

Has anyone else from high population realms noticed how very dead the maps are now by comparison?

It took about half an hour for enough people to gather to be interested in doing Dwayna in the Megaserver Malchor’s I was in earlier today.

Similarly, no one on map responded to Arah Defense in a CS I was in just now. Nobody cared to help me kill the Champ at Anchorage to restart the event either – only two people responded to map chat, and too late to matter at that.

It seems like Megaserver has had a very interesting effect on those of us from higher population realms: Spreading the population too thinly across the megaserver fractals.

After exploring some low level zones and world bosses (though I admit I didn’t go to far out of my way to see the population differences) I believe this problem is exclusive to those world events not on a timer. Before, people knew when Temple bosses like Dwayna were up using API programs. Now, however, no one knows when a temple chain is about to start (and very few people are going to wait around for 3 hours to do it).

Overall, from my experiences it seems map population has increased even on the servers with a very large population.

That said, I do believe there are problems with the current Megaserver system, just that a decrease in (most) map populations isn’t one of them.

We can’t publically recruit in PvE chat for WvW activities without giving the game away to other server players too!

Perhaps the home cities and 1-15 maps should be off the megaservers? I always believed the 1-15 maps had a fairly decent population when I’ve been exploring – I always thought the higher level maps seemed to have lower populations.
