Any *must have* items to buy with gems?

Q:

I’ve returned from a two year hiatus and am finding the game quite enjoyable. Looking at the trade company page I’ve noticed quite a number of convenience items I can buy that weren’t there before. Any recommendations on what to get and when to get them? Do any of the items tend to go on sale before others?

A:

  1. Bank Tab Expansion
  2. Copper Fed Salvage-O-Matic
  3. Watchwork Mining Pick (extra watchwork sprockets)
  4. Consortium Harvesting Sickle (harvests faster then other sickles)
  5. Any Permanent Axe – any one you like the looks of, as there is no advantage of one over another
  6. Home Portal Stone – use this all the time if you have nodes in Home instance and Merchant
  7. Basic Cloth Rack – This is useful as cloth is usually harder to come by then normal harvesting nodes
  8. Character Slot Expansion – as needed
  9. Storage Expander (Don’t confuse with Additional Crafting License) – This is an arguable item. I bought one 250 expansion because it allows you some leeway when it comes to Material Storage. Also be warned: this does NOT apply to regular bank slots i.e. if you pull 500 Bloodstone Dust from your expanded material storage slot, it will only move 250 stacks over at a time.
  • Black Lion Salvage Kits are nice but they drop so often from Daily Achievements & Map completion, you should have a bunch of those built up just from playing
  • Mystic Forge Stones are nice but they too drop in-game from Login reward chests & Achievement chests so probably not worth buying

Well that is my list. You will note there is no ‘Style’ items in there because I don’t much care to pay for style personally.

Everyone needs a talking robot that comments on everything you do

On a more serious note I would go with:

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Copper-Fed_Salvage-o-Matic

And the unlimited gathering tools when they are available.

Thanks for the quick reply, but which gathering tools should I go with? There’s a few different ones for each tool.

only one that matters is the watchwork pick, as you get bonus sprockets, for the others..choose the animation you like best

The ones whose animations annoy you least^^

Seriously, though, if you plan on buying those things with gold, just be aware that you can buy A LOT of orichalcum tools for that amount of currency. They really are just for convenience, and with the merchant in Heart of the Mists that you can access from anywhere and then return to the spot where you left they are not even that superior anymore.

Any must have items to buy with gems?

No.

No must have items at all.

Anet have done a good job with the gem shop, stocking lots of tempting items but nothing you absolutely have to have.

I have been tempted into buying quite a few gem shop items but they are all fun items or make the game more user friendly, like extra storage, character slots etc…

Copper Fed Salvage-o-Matic is probably the most useful item I’ve bought from the gemstore. It’s not essential (no gemstore item really is), but it’s easily the handiest by far. Next in line, I agree, is the watchwork mining pick.

Just be aware that the convenience of these items goes down with the more alts you have. =P

Watchwork pick of course because it makes you earn extra money.
Sickle i would buy the consortium or molten because they are the fastest.
Axes don’t have anything special .. so its only the animation.

I don’t think there are any must-have items in the gem store.

But things I’ve found useful are:

  • Infinite Gathering Tools – purely convenience, it will take absolutely ages to even break even on spending the same amount on normal tools but I really like having them.
  • Bank slots – I’ve only bought 2 so far, but if I’m going to max out any of the upgrades it’ll be this one.
  • Character slots – I’ve only got 1, but it means I can have 1 of each race and 1 extra slot to try out other things.
  • Noble Count Outfit – this is entirely personal preference but ever since Morrowind I’ve liked the idea of having something other than armor for my character to wear in non-combat situations, and especially something fancy for situations where armor looks out of place and this is perfect.

CFSOM is probably the best convienience item available, if you salvage more than 100 times a day. Same goes for the silver fed som, if you salvage more than 100 rares a day, its a must have.

I also really like the royal terrace pass but im not sure, if its available atm. If you find yourself porting more than 10 times per day to a hub because you want to talk to a npc, I would get it. Saves you quite a bit of coin over time for wp costs too.

Like already mentioned, watchwork pick and other perm tools are nice just like extra bag and bank space. But for those I would probably wait for a sale and make a personal storage guild first, unless youre short on guild slots.

Like other already said Cooper-Fed Salvage-O-Matic and unlimited gatherings tools are pretty convenient. But its really about convenience as they usually won’t save you gold.

The Salvage-o-matic for exemple. It will take 2 millions salvages before you get back the gold you put into it. That will take several years before you reach that amount.

For unlimited gathering tools you will need to use 36 millions charge to get back your gold. With the Watchwork Mining Pick it will be between 1-0.5 milllions (hard to estimate I don’t have the average sprocket you get from it)

So in the end, you will probably never get our gold back from these items, but they will be convenient.

1. Copper Fed Salvage O Matic.
2. Watchwork Mining Pick (skip all the others, they don’t have bonus items).
3. Any unlimited Axe and Sickle.
4. Home Instance Nodes (quick daily completion).

Thank you all for the very useful input. Gathering tools seem to be a general consensus but my last question before dropping 3k gems on them is this: Will these tools work in HoT? Is it likely or unlikely ANet will make it so you have to buy different tools for the next ex-pac?

Might want to wait, they probably (maybe will) be on special when the exp drops.

I highly doubt they would change it so existing tools don’t work in the expansion. after all, nodes are nodes. More likely to add even more tools to choose from. I only hope they even them out so all offer the advantage of the sprocket one.

1. Bag Slots
2. Bank Slots
3. Copper fed Salvage o Matic

Everything else is FLUFF, 6900+ hrs, 8 characters – 1 of each, and all i can say is buy this 3 and youll be set, the unlimited harvesting items are not so big of a deal , i have them but meh. copper fed salvage of matic will keep your inventory clean of greens and blues, use mystic salvage kit for rares, black lion for exotics.

Depends on how many characters you have. I have 10 fully geared 80s that I regularly swap around from dungeon to dungeon. I have no issues keeping current gathering tools and a host of cheap salvage kits on each one. The ‘convenience’ of the infinite versions is quickly lost when I would have to move them from character to character via the bank.

The infinite salvage kit is higher valued than all the cosmetic harvest tools by far as a convenience item, since you will need to keep a decent stock of salvage kits on each character and you only need to buy 1. The harvest tools are 1000 gems per, thats over 30$ for something you will never earn back from things you harvest (its ‘possible’, but dont lie, you know nobody will even if they harvest lots of stuff everyday for years). The harvest tools are convenience only, and I would highly suggest against them unless maybe you only play 1-2 characters.

I purchased extra bag slots on my first 2 characters and stopped afterwards. Once you can get free 20 slots for every character you make (fractals), extra bagslots seem less useful.

The home instance nodes are a pure rip-off.

The home portal is a pure rip-off.

Storage expander sounds nice but its a rip-off. Theres no real reason to hold things over 250 (just sell stuff) – or if you really want to keep more use bank tabs or make a guild storage bank (which is free).

And speaking of bank tabs! This is pretty much the only thing I recommend buying at least 1-2 of. This is something all your characters can share easily, and you gain lots of space per gem.

TLDR:
I’d buy a ‘shared bag space’ for my account easily, even if it only held like.. 4 slots. Most people I know in this game play lots of characters so the convenience of many items is quickly lost. If you have to go to a bank to move them around, you might as well just buy new tools/kits, which are sold in more places than there are banks. Consider that for the cost of 1 full set of harvest tools, you could’ve purchased 3 copies of GW2 (10 :bux:) on that sale they recently had, gotten 3 more login dailies, 3 more account banks, 15 more guild storage banks.
