One of my main issues with the game is the lack of international guesting / guesting out of your home region.
I tried to ignore and forgot about it for a while, but recently a friend of mine bought the game and as much as I’d like to show him the ropes, he’s in a NA server and I’m in a EU one. Transfering is expensive and it means leaving the people on EU server, which would cause the same problem, just from the opposite side.

I’m aware that the lack of this feature is related to, uh.. Dataservers, issues with ping, right?

So can we expect any way to solve issues like the one above in the future? Perhaps some special kind of servers that allows for connection from both, EUs and NAs?

Hello,

I fully agree with this, we -need- a solution for this problem. I have a few friends who bought the game and went to a European server and I can’t play with them. And paying to move to Europe isn’t a solution, as I would have to pay again to go back to NA servers.

I don’t care if I can play WvW with them, I just want to enjoy doing dungeons and leveling with them.

I’ve been thinking of many options that wouldn’t be too hard to implement:
- Having an “alt” home server in europe where you can transfert to -for free- but limited in time (like 1 time a week)
- Having international instances. It wouldn’t work for leveling but at least we could do dungeons and fractals…
- Having the character being bound to a home server instead of the account

Right now the community is splitted in two and it’s a shame. We can be in the same guild but we’ll never get to play all together, this needs to change.
If we can send items and stuff to people in europe it means we should be able to share more datas…

When switching regions, your account data is transferred one datacenter to the other. This would cost them bandwidth and database processing to transfer the records and verify them. The last thing you would want is a simple transfer without a backup and something to go wrong, so the amount of stored data they would have would be doubled, increasing costs.

They have to transfer the data, else there would be major lag in anything that interacted with your character (which could reveal dupe exploits), plus you would have to assume their servers even support accessing cross region data. The amount of communication between the datacenters would greatly increase, increasing costs. I doubt they’d do cross region instances either, due to this cost.

If they were to implement cross region guesting, it would have to be very limited. Transferring account data shouldn’t be a common occurrence. They would have to make a special guesting option to permanently guest until disabled, with something like a 24+ hour cooldown once disabled. I’d guess they would also charge a fee for it since they wouldn’t want everyone to do it.

It would still be certainly nice to have, despite its limitations. I would be more than willing to wait for Anet to test the bugs out if it meant I could play with friends from overseas.

Here’s how to do it without spending money:

Step 1 – Delete all your characters
Step 2 – Transfer servers for free
Step 3 – Make new characters

You pay Anet for the process of transferring character data over to different data servers. If you have no characters, the only data your sending is what’s in your Bank tabs.
