Anyone else have trouble playing?
You customize later using traits, not skills…and also by changing runes and sigils, plus the armor that you use. There’s still quite a bit of variation left.
For open world I love minion builds, but they’re not great use in dungeons I’ve found. I love well builds for dungeons, which use completely different traits. I sometimes have used a condition build as well.
And switching out weapons really can change things around too. Limiting yourself to one weapon is one way to limit your enjoyment of the game.
Upgrading your skills through traits/gear/sigils/runes is meaningful progression, maybe you should try various content too.
There is not one build that works best in all content :p
Though if you don’t like aesthetic rewards you are not going to have a good time.
This isn’t one of those asinine “I quit” threads, but a genuine concern I have.
So my necromancer has reached 33 and I realize that not even halfway through leveling I have every single skill I will ever use and this has left me quite concerned.
After getting a set of gear that isn’t ugly (think every classes 1-20 gear) and finally seeing how powerful a condition necromancer can be, I realize there isn’t a tremendous amount of development in store.
I just don’t see myself playing the next 40+ levels with the same exact skills, it seems kinda dull.
When I started GW2 I was averaging 10+ hours a day losing a lot of sleep, now I haven’t played in almost a week. Just don’t see the point If there is no more meaningful character development why play? Like I get there are trait points but acquiring new and more powerful skills is so vital to core RPG mechanics I’m sitting here thinking wtf.
Is this just exclusive to necromancers or is this just the game?
trait combinations and certain traits can alter your playstyle as much as skills. For a condition Necro it may not be as obvious or entertaining as some other classes, generally speaking the things a level 80 can do via traits and runes/sigils far outclasses what they can do at level 30 when they dont have access to master or grandmaster traits.
I will say that a cursory glance at condition necro traits, while usefull, doesnt seem that exciting although they do increase power and ability to stack conditions.
But for example on ranger a grandmaster in power gives signets effects that were on pets to the ranger, allowing things like 1.5x damage on next hit, invulnerability, stability
Mesmers can count themselves towards shatters, allowing them to use any shatter at any time and increase the power of other shatters or, getting addition skill use per cast in mantras
Engineers get auto might with a certain kit equiped or explosions AOE heal, or 50% faster endurance.
many of the traits or combinations of certain traits are more powerful than a new skill, and actually make more sense for refining your chosen builds, because hey, more skills dont really effect 1 chosen playstyle.
That said, i think you should consider the possibility of other interesting playstyles. I really think ANet needs to look into making either some sort of gear locker, or storing armor/stats/runes so people actually can try other builds. The large inventory and inventory management issues prevent many people from trying new builds, even with max inventory multiple gear sets is still a pretty big hassle.
no offense but at level 33 you know two things about your class: jack and squat. There’s more; a lot more.

in his defense, necro traits for conditions dont seem to give you any really big game changers playstyle wise.

It’s all good mate, you’re not the only one who has felt that way about the combat system, and don’t let these crazy Gw2 fans shut down your views.
In comparison to many other MMOs that you may have played, Guildwars 2 does have that limit on options when it comes to all the abilities and gadgets available (at one time). Most of the time you will find yourself only using 4 abilities while all the others are on cool down from being previously used.
This can get boring after awhile because you’re spamming the same stuff. I suppose it’s like that with other games also, but its more noticeable on here due to the small action bar, and sure you can swap weapon sets to gain different abilities, but you’re still limited to XX amount of active abilities at one time (Instead of a range of abilities)
I think what you’re feeling is perfectly normal, just you need to either adapt to it.. or let it bug you.
2 weapons + Death Shroud + 5 utility slots – 20 skills in total is not enough for you?
I especially like GW2 because it’s simple (not many useless skills like the most generic MMOs), and yet with high learning curve (especially with some classes) plus good combat mechanics, that keep you engaged. The traits and the gear customization add so much to the game as well. Also what kind of skills are you using in the other mmos? Fire arrow-fire arrow-fire arrow and occasionally fire ball or something?
If you feel lonely in the world, find a guild, make friends. I know it’s easy to say it, but maybe you need someone to play with. GW2 is appealing to the solo loving players, maybe you are not one of them. I was leveling my first char with a friend, and it was a lot of fun
Well on a condition necromancer you only really need scepter+dagger, I only weapon swap to destroy inanimate objects. I have no need to switch skills, just use 3 corruption skills plus deathly swarm. I only deathshroud to mob creatures but I’m so stacked in condition damage it doesnt come up a lot.
Like from 25-33 I’ve used the exact same skills the exact same way and I’m getting stronger and stronger as I stack more and more condition damage, but its the same thing no matter what encounter.
Can do it from memory: cripple, bleed, might, deathly swarm feast of corruption 1 on 1
If multiples i kite them together in time to cripple, bleed, poison, might, epidemic, deathly swarm, feast of corruption, basically 10 conditions there when I transfer my conditions, which makes feast deadly.
Didnt have to go in game to check anything, been doing this exact formula for 8 levels.
And I cant imagine doing the exact same skills in the exact same order for 47 more levels.
You may find, as time goes on, that condition mesmer is not ideal. It’s fine for soloing. Maybe some PvP. But because of the way conditions stack in Guild Wars 2, when/if you start doing dungeons, or even in larger dynamic events, you’re going to find some of your condition damage is completely wasted because of the stack limit.
