Considering the rewards for this – I`d strongly advise that you don’t collect anything, especially spoons.

You`ll go out, get many, hard to find, rare items, including ascended…..and in return, you`ll get back nothing of any use whatsoever.

Collections are basically a jumping puzzle that forces you to spend 50 to several hundred gold before it lets you open the chest. I don’t find that appealing really.

I love the spoon collector achievement. Spoon collecting always seemed particularly random to me and collecting virtual spoons even more so. I haven’t started on it yet but I’ve heard some of the spoons come from odd places, like Tequatl and Orr.

I haven’t actually started working on any of the other collections either but I’ve gotten credit towards some from things I already had and things I’ve found just playing. Today I unlocked one for collecting Krait Weapons by finding a Krait Scale.

Well, that’s the thing, it would be funny, if the reward was a humorous item. I`ve heard it suggested that there should be a spoon great sword, for example. The problem with the collections is that the amount of effort and expense needed is not matched by the amount of thought and effort put into the rewards. I don’t think anyone would mind the cost if the end result was a noteworthy, unique item that could be showed off, to tell people that you were indeed the spoon master.

Quite why this system was brought in without any of that I do not know. It reminds me a lot of the first season wvw reward let down all over again.

I have no idea why they would, but they do. I couldn’t find a Wikipedia page but I did find pages on antique spoon collecting, the antique spoon collectors magazine and even advice on how to display your spoon collection

There are even sub-specialisations. For example my mother in law collects spoons with pictures of fuscias on them from places she goes on holiday.

So certainly not something Anet made up, but possibly something one of their staff is interested in.

It doesn’t make sense to me, but then I’m sure spoon collectors would say much the same about me collecting semi-precious gem stones (mostly the kind you find in new age shops, nothing crazy expensive), obscure vinyl albums by my favourite bands and mini pets in GW2.

As Vayne said for most collectors it’s the collection itself that’s the reward. A combination of the challenge of finding and acquiring the items you’re collecting and having them as decorative and/or functional items.

To people moaning about collectibles – they were a great addition for collectors. Now I want every piece of dungeon gear and all the weapons. Maybe I won’t use the ascended trinket, but I still want to do it.

There are plenty of collections. Check in your Achievements tab in the Collections section. More will unlock as well, for instance if you chow down on a Seared Steak from the bandit-plagued ranch near Claypool in Queensdale.

But indeed, most of them do require a giant investment for a reward you could get directly (eat all the steak, including learning two feast recipes, for a Metabolic Primer. Whee). So have fun filling the collection but don’t do it for the cool reward. One exception: I don’t think you can get the spirit backpack unless you make all the spirit weapons. Whether that’s worth it to you is up to you.

I finished this collection today. It took me 3 fractal runs to find the fractal spoon. The only difficult to find are the fractal, wvw, and tequatl since they are RNG based (although they seem to drop fairly frequently). The others can be bought with karma. The only one that made me wince to get was the ascended spoon- luckily I had some guild comms saved up!

I’ve decided that I’ll work on the cheaper collections and let the other ones come to me. Most of the race specific weapons are fairly cheap to make (krait, hylek, grawl, etc). Plus running around screaming at grawl to give me their grawl paws is pretty fun!

Dulfy has several of the collections listed here, and some are bugged atm http://dulfy.net/2014/09/08/gw2-items-collections-guide/

For some people collecting was always a part of playing the game, and part of what makes it fun.

IMO the important thing is not to make it your sole focus. I could spend most/all my time grinding gold to buy minis, but that would be boring. Instead I just play and as and when I have enough for another one I put in a buy order. Just like how in real life I don’t spend all my free time travelling around looking for shops that sell stones I haven’t got yet. But if I happen to come across a promising shop I’ll take a few minutes to check out their collection.

And if you’re not interested then all the other stuff is still there. You don’t have to do the collection achievements any more than you have to do the WvW ones or PvP ones or jumping puzzles or any of the other achievements.

One man’s junk is another’s treasure.

My late grandmother collected Spoons from all the places she’d been. Many of them are quiet ornate and beautiful. In fact they have become one of my most treasured things since she passed. Because every time I look at them I remember the memories not the item.

A lot of collecting is for this reason (at least in my family) We collect things for the memories. I Already do this in game. now I get AP and rewards (i find many of the rewards rather useful) for it on top of the memories.

Not EVERYTHING has to be a checklist people. Remember: Just because you don’t see its value doesn’t mean that someone else doesn’t.

I think the overall idea is excellent, but some of the achievements baffle me. Collect 25 junk items for eg. Then you bin them. That’s just something shoved in to bump up the number of collections in the list. Collect all dragon jade weapons…but no others. Collect all craftable armour skins…just lacks vision and purpose.

These are minor criticisms, but they feel almost like something put in to gauge reaction to the idea, rather than wholeheartedly committing to something which is in fact a really good concept.

The potential is fantastic – especially if they use them to fully explore the world a bit more and reward appropriately for the time invested.

All the black Lion Ticket weapons have collections, they are just “hidden” until you have at least one of them. So that just means that you only have a Jade weapon(s).

Trash Collector is the only one of that I found fun/amusing. Most of the others boils down to “how much gold or money can I throw at it to make it complete”. This one was “figure out what needs killing and where”. Sure you could also follow a guide but that have pretty good chance of ruining just about anything.

I like the idea of collections but I have three major problems with it. The first is, as stated before, they rarely give anything unique. So far spirit backpack is the only unique skin I’ve seen. If all of them gave useful items with unique skins that shared the theme of the collection, I’d be all over it.

The second problem is that many of the collected items serve no other purpose. Tequatl’s spoon should be an accessory or at least part of a mystic forge recipe that gives a unique accessory. Even if it was just an exotic that i could choose the stats for, that would give me a reason to keep it after gaining the achievement points. I would also be able to sell any extras that I receive on the trading posts.

The third problem is that many of the collections are skins bought with black lion tickets or rely heavily on RNG. There’s no way to earn these in game. You have to have the cash to buy them off the trading post or get lucky. I don’t understand why anet keeps insisting on doing things this way. RNG keeps me from buying black lion keys because I’m far more likely to get something I consider junk than something I want. It keeps me from running fractals even though I want the fractal skins because there’s no guaranteed way to get any of the them, much less the ones that I want. It keeps me from making a legendary because I refuse to pay another player thousands of gold for a precursor just because he happens to be luckier than I am. I am more than willing to work for my skins. Just give me a set path, like the Mawdrey II backpiece, and I will gladly play the game to get it.

That’s precisely the reason they were introduced, no doubt. It’s a way for veteran players with more gold than they know what to do with to spend it on for little things to showcase their uniqueness.

For my part, I’m slowly collecting the items as and when I have the opportunity to do so.

For those who don’t know spoon collecting has been around in real life for many years. Back I the day my sister collected these things they are small half size of a regular teaspoon mostly made of metal some were even silver or silver plated, that you bought at a gift shops and tourist traps when traveling in the US. Usually with the place name and a seen stamped in the metal handle. I think this started in the 1950s but it could be older. Some places still sell them today but I don’t think it’s as popular as it once was my sister had several hundred spoons the last time I visited her and she started I think around 12 years old and is still collecting these thing today she is in her 50s and has them in wooden frames hanging on the wall she has them from every state major city national parks and seashores Disney land and other places. So that’s where someone from Anet got the idea, so family member or friend must have had a collection and thought it would be fun to add this to the game.
