Apathetic and unfriendly players on Cursed Shore
I will rez a person that shows up on the minimap within reason (the body isn’t sitting under a champion), but by no means are people required to. If someone does go out of their way for you great, but you shouldn’t expect it, imo.
Priorities, what to do?
Spend hours with dye
I’ll always rez a player in need, as long as it doesn’t get me killed.
I agree. Of course it should not be required or expected in all cases. Maybe one of those people were in a serious rush.
This is message was written for the multiple people standing right next to my dead body near a waypoint with no enemies.
Should you expect it in this case?
I always rez people, even if it might get me killed. I might dodge out of the way, but I come back as soon as I can. Can’t say I’ve run across any jerks on my server, I’ve always been rezzed in kind.
3rd Flora Artillery Unit
I will rez where i can.
Last night me and a random were trying for a skill point i managed to get it but ‘he’ got killed before he was able, so i hung around rezed a bit killed a bit (seriously stupid re-spawn time o.O) This must have gone on for a good 5 mins…….. fortunately a couple more people came a long and he got his point.
Expect it, no you should not expect it since its not required and people can be as * as they want to be.
But they should have helped, I would have done it…. well I would have asked if you need a rez in case you were afk or a bot, some people are nice some are not, just don’t start being like them.
Haven’t seen this sort of issue yet. I’ll always try to res someone as long as its not an obvious death for me;)
At least you didnt get tea bagged like in some other game I wont mention. But ya dont be like them.
This sucks. I’m really sorry that happened.
I’ve experienced it a few times myself; I always rez other players, even have gone out of my way and combated a few mobs to do it.
It’s incredible how hostile some MMO players have gotten, which is why it’s so gravely important to support and provoke positive play and interaction through the game environment.
Not to beat dead horses, but I’m sure any psych major would easily place some attribution for the hostile players on the bugged SPs / DEs, bots, etc, while the rest are quite probably overflow from other MMOs.

At the risk of sounding goofy, I am actually disappointed if someone “releases” before I can get to them to rez them. OP, given the situation you describe, I would have been surprised/disappointed, too, at the response you got when you needed that rez. I’m hoping this was a fluke and that your future experiences will be better.

I’ve found that the “helpfulness” of other players has been inversely proportional to the level of the zone. That is, in low level zones, there are a lot of genuinely nice and helpful folk. High level zones are full of trolls, and I don’t just mean the ones in Frostgorge Sound. That is to say nothing of the bots.
My theory: players are getting jaded/embittered at level 80, probably in frustration at the tedious grind to get exotic armor and legendary weapons. They therefore give absolutely no kittens for anyone else.
Rule #1 of the Internet. People can be jerks.
Another thing to consider, however, is that the high level zones at this point have more of those people who thought the game is only about grinding through content as fast a possible. As others have pointed out, they’re the jaded ones and probably not the ones who will form any kind of community.
It’s a bit early to judge the game’s community, I think. It will takes several months for that to truly establikittenelf.
For what it’s worth I will go out of my way to rez players I see on the map. (Unless they look like a dead bot, but a quick tell will answer that)
I was right next to a waypoint with no enemies around.
Why didnt you rez?

Sorry forum gods, I know this is off topic.
I totally lol’d at “establikittenelf”. Hadda take a second look, when I read it in my head it sounded like “I stab a kitten elf”.

“The most important thing in any game should be the player” – R. Soesbee
This happened a couple times for me as well, both cases in high level areas, it is a bit disappointing since I go out of my way to rez anyone I see on the map that’s dead even if it’s a bad situation I will try to help by rezzing little by little. Thankfully not everyone is like this and there are more people that will rez than those that don’t. (at least for my server)
I always rez, but I’m a WvW player. So it’s probably the muscle memory kicking in.
I was right next to a waypoint with no enemies around.
Why didnt you rez?
He didn’t want to spend a silver.
To be fair, are you sure the players you saw were, in fact, players?
I had the same thought about Frostgorge, but after spending 2 nights there It is very clear to me that there are loads of “patrolling bots” now, they will run a predictable route and just attack the enemies in the way with the same pattern of skills(in that case the warrior and guardian would use a gap closer, a whirl attack and then proceed to auto attack til critter is dead, healing whenever health was bellow 60%)
Unsurprisingly, these bots will not ress no matter what, but will always “help you out” with monsters.
In 2 nights I found over 12 bots in Frostgorge, I saw the typical “teleporting ranger with bear squad” and a lot of these little patrolling duos that I once thought to be regular. moody players.
I rez whenever I can. If it’s right next an enemy, I pull up my 6 second Guardian barrier skill and get as much done as I can in those 6 seconds.
However, I have to admit, it irks me when people start calling in my chat asking people to rez them. Maybe I’m just too judgmental or something, and I’m probably the only one, but when someone isn’t willing to spend the small money it takes to get to a WP (no matter how frustrating it is), and instead call out for help in the chat, I just get frustrated and see them as being lazy and needy. I’m not saying you were, and I’m not saying I wouldn’t rez someone who was like this, but I would be annoyed.
But that’s just me and my jerkiness lol.
It’s not that they didn’t want to rez you. It’s just the majority of players in Cursed Shore are bots and CAN’T rez you.

Maybe some kid can teach this bots to be more human… to value life and feel empathy… teach them to say things like “I’ll be back”and “hasta la vista baby”
what?
At least you didnt get tea bagged like in some other game I wont mention. But ya dont be like them.
It is ever hilarious when 6 mobs get trained into you by some bleep who got in over his head and decides to make them your problem. Epecially when you kill 5 and die to the 6th and the guy walks back in, loots the corpses and walks away. This happened several times.
Also, I did a few skill challenges where people just stood there and watched for 5 minutes and shot 2 arrows when the boss was almost dead so they got credit.
Also, I helped a guy through a difficult passage, rezzed him a bunch of times, finally died within sight of the vista and the guy ignored me and hit the vista and ported out.
Remind me why exactly I should be nice to people again. Going to Caledon Forest and annoying some noob by grabbing mobs with scorpion wire before he can tag them is fun. And it’s not like helping people benefits me in any way.
Except for that one guy who was doing a boss in an area that was out of the way and he asked for help and we did the boss together. I almost thought the game had a mature community willing to work as a team. Then I got to the norn starting zone, got called an idiot twice in five minutes because I suggested the classes were not balanced and decided humanity is still scum.
I have raised people at Grenth, not a last minute-coming-to-the-party raise, a full resurrection raise, for them to dance all over my corpse for 5 minutes when I’ve been hit by an icicle.
Yeah thanks, bro.
I still raise people though. I just realise you can’t make everyone grateful and you can’t make them raise you.
This isn’t a new moral dilemma, it’s as old as the mountains this one.
I’m an athiest and the only thing I think the bible is accurate about is the Golden Rule.
I raise people as I’d like to think they’d do the same for me, circumstances permitting.

I was right next to a waypoint
THIS. You where right next to a waypoint, no reason why you couldn’t have res’d yourself.
Also remember that people like to go afk at waypoints, and sometimes mobs attack way points. So if a person keeps getting res’d at a way point then keep getting killed, they will have a hefty repair bill to pay.
I’m sorry expecting someone to res you when you are AT the waypoint? Sigh…..
O-O this whole thread freaks me out :p
I have never really encountered a horrible player in the game.
I have gone out of my way to help and I have been helped by more people than I can count, either by ressing me, killing the guy I’m targeting if in downed state and it is a huge fight or just to get difficult skill points. even somethinfg as silly as finding a last vista or POI
This has made me feel so positive about the community that I go out of my way to return the sentiment.
Same with map chat- people are asking for advice, linking waypoints for events and just generally chatting.
I think it greatly depends on the sever as some servers definitely are more mature than others

Or, you know, the experience gained by resurrecting someone is irrelevant at level 80.
Also, I wouldn’t res you either, OP. I don’t help lazy bums.
Yes OP, there are total you-know-what’s in this game and pretty much all other MMOs. It’s part of the little kid machismo. Some day they will grow up but for now we just have to deal with them. That’s one of the reasons why I started an all-adult guild, no obnoxious little snots allowed.
Cursed Shore is an unofficial South East Asian server, and players there fall under a few categories:
1) They are bots
2) They are unintelligent sub-humans
3) They are smart, but extremely selfish and arrogant.I transferred off Cursed Shore for those reasons, went to the “real” NA/EU servers and never looked back.
Players on servers populated by a majority of westerners are smarter and kinder in general, it makes me feel embarrassed that I have to call myself one of those SEA players.
Apart from the racism, is there some hidden meaning in this post?
Cursed Shore isn’t a server, it’s a location on the map. The level 80 area.
What do you mean? I don’t understand any of what you said.
establikittenelf.
Ok, that is just silly ANet. Silly I say.
He didn’t want to spend a silver.
So what happens when the person is broke ? perma Death ?
And the coast of rezing if anything is about the same as killing a mob and selling the vendor trash on it

Yes, there is a hidden meaning in the post. 3 guesses, prize for guessing is a tray of peach pies.
Ok can you tell me where the real NA/EU server is so I can transfer there? I’m intruiged now.
Peaches? Blech.
If you find folks universally unfriendly maybe it’s time to look for a new server. I would check out the guild subforum, hook up with some folks that have similar play goals to yours, and transfer to their server.
I will sometimes walk past dead players, especially if they’re close to a waypoint, because if they’re AFK, rezzing them is just upping their repair bills. If I was right there and someone asked, I stop and help. I’m sure I may have missed some requests because I was in reading guild chat or sorting my inventory as I was moving. I’m not always looking at my chat window.

I have seen people ask in chat before if someone could send them a silver because they couldn’t res. Hell I have sent 10 silver to a new player because they didn’t manage their money better and died being broke.
It’s called communication, people need to do it more. You will be surprised when people are actually nice and help out! :P
Plus my server is Tarnished Coast, it has a GREAT community!
1. They were bots (tons in Cursed).
2. They thought you were a dead bot. (I generally go by names and amount of armor equipped – I refuse to rez bots that don’t tele out).
3. They were jerks.
Play on Borlis Pass here too. People are frustrated because cursed is ALL messed up for awhile. So most aren’t in a happy mood.
I noticed this as well, once you hit the 70+ zones everyone turns into straight up kittens that will do nothing if it doesn’t benefit themselves.
I think the main issue for this is the insane amount of time it takes to revive someone that is completely downed. If they make reviving someone that fully downed much faster while out of combat then i am sure many more people would take the time to revive.
But now that i think about it more. it seems pretty isolated to the orr zones which are so bad that most people just want to rush and get the zones over with as fast as possible so they can leave, so they don’t want to stop to help anyone else.
This is how it works:
New guy goes out of his way to help people and cooperate with groups to take down bosses, answers “LFG” calls, etc.
As he levels up, people keep harshing his mellow. Things like watching him do all the work w/ DEs and SPs then jumping in to share the kill with little effort, trolling in chat, kicking him just before the final boss in dungeons, walking by his corpse and laughing at him for dying, etc.
By the time he gets to upper levels, he’s bitter and cynical and because he can’t find these random jerks to mess with them he goes back to the lower levels, finds some random new guy, and harshes his mellow.
And the cycle repeats itself endlessly, until you end up with a game where no one wants anything to do with other players unless they get more out of the deal than the other guy.
@MrLee there is a difference between community and being to cheap/lazy to rez expecting somebody else to rez you
I will rez people i come across help out others when i can. But i will not rez somebody because they expect somebody to so they can save a few coins
He didn’t want to spend a silver.

I heard if you can’t afford the fee you can go to the nearest waypoint for free. Not sure if it’s true or not, I’ve never died without so much as a handful of copper. I do know that if your toon doesn’t have enough money on it the game will take waypoint fees from your bank also/instead.
So if Toon A is broke and there’s nothing in your bank and you absolutely cannot revive, just switch to Toon B, sell something you didn’t really need and put the money in the bank. Then you can log on with Toon A and use the bank money.
FWIW I revive fallen players when I see them. I don’t care if it’s a bot or not, if there’s a fallen player lying there and I can do it safely I will revive. Begging for it in chat strikes me as a little lazy/cheap/desperate and while I wouldn’t travel out of my way to answer the call, if I pass by him I’d probably give him a revive.
If I walk by without doing it then I was distracted by something and didn’t see him, or there were too many enemies in the area to do it safely.
(edited by tolunart.2095)
I’m finding the opposite on my server, many times i start reviving a defeated player and yet they still teleport to the nearest WP. wonder if they will still do that once it starts costing a couple silver rather than copper.

There have been times I paused to study the map and decide where to res – do I want to be next to a bank to get money, or a repair merchant? Go to a different area to get a few levels? Just before I hit the “yes” button and port into a new area, I see a message on the screen that someone is healing me. I’m sure there have been times when I didn’t see the message and ported out in mid-revive.
It’s probably something like that, I don’t know anyone who would rather spend coin than let someone revive them.
I noticed this as well, once you hit the 70+ zones everyone turns into straight up kittens that will do nothing if it doesn’t benefit themselves.
I would suggest that many people are “straight up kittens” at every level. They just have an incentive to behave otherwise at lower levels. I also dont think people all of a sudden get jaded, etc. at higher levels as a source of the issue, just no incentive to not be entirely selfish.
So, you have to appeal to the selfishness to help such people help others.
I think a reasonable starting point would be to award a bit of copper for each rez once you are level capped. Maybe make it a bit less than the mobs randomly drop (50c or so in Cursed Shores). It might open some doors to exploiting as well, but it can be easier to plug those holes as they appear.
Just an idea

I would imagine most of those that passed you by may not be players at all but script kiddies… That being said, I dont use map chat hardly at all anymore. If its not in guild or friend listings I dont know about it. You can try sending a tell or useing /say and that will at times get my attention, but 90% of the time I am using voice chat with guild mates on TS and dont even look at chat windows. I would imagine that to be true for many people. If I am around you obviously sure no problem, but with map travel costs even on the same map being so outrageous your asking someone else to pay the fee for you dieing so they can Teleport (TP) to you and res you instead of you paying for that yourself. If someone is in the area sure great but if not and their is nothing but script kiddies your not going to be seeing any help from those bots… I am not looking forwards to ANYTHING in Orr at this point cause I know its completely and totally overrun according to everyone that has gone there so far. I just cant stomach that so I am taking my time and getting 100% on everything prior that I can to avoid it as long as I can.

I am sorry for your misfortune, OP. However, I would not have rezzed you either.
You fell, you will not get an armor repair penalty for dying. If I rez you, you do. what’s worse, 1s for a teleport 3 ft? Or kitten repair cost? I would assume people knew you had fallen and while its a jerky thing to walk away, they saved you a bit of coin.
If your in a dwoned state, I won’t hesitate to pick you up, or try and rally you. I will rally first, as you will not get armor damage from a rally, but if I lift you, you do.
usually people stop to raise you, but I stopped going to great length for this as I had people port out a lot of times while i was trying to get veteran hordes off their back first.
Come play on SBI and we will take care of you!
@teviko
Its odd how I never realized that about the repair costs. I will remember that thank you. However, if the guy was sitting there and asked you nicely – you should consider rezzing him (or explaining what you did in your post even if it takes a minute)? If you do leave spare him the wise comments before leaving (like I got).
I’m surprised by the number of responses in the thread and mostly fairly positive ones.
Some of the responses may have been onto something when talking about bots. I didn’t realize until someone pointed them out yesterday, that there are bots WALKING around in groups. I even saw clan tags on a couple of them. I assumed all the bots were standing at the big events. So I must consider maybe some of those people were not real players.
My specific situation really wasn’t a big deal other than what I perceived. I have plenty of money to rez with. I wasn’t ON a waypoint but was close (near the entrance by a fence). It costs a silver to teleport 5 ft…
Thanks all for the responses. I will not let that situation make me bitter. I was trying to figure out a way for a higher level player to have an incentive to rez someone without giving them some kind of reward that would be exploited.
A level of class is all I can think of. I hope some guilds hold their members to that.
If you are a guild officer / creator make sure the members aren’t bots please. lol.
I’m less likely to help or rez in cursed shore anymore since half or more of the avatars I encounter are bots. I’m starting to feel this way in general since as I level alts I often see more bots than players.
I despise bots, cheaters, exploiters, and I’m extremely unhappy with ANets lack of dealing with the bot situation, so I’m usually in a foul mood shortly after I arrive in Orr since you can’t go 100yds without seeing multiple bots. Sadly, EVERY zone is starting to feel that way to me.
When its obviously a player I always go out of my way to help and/or rez.
There is definitely less of a friendly feeling between players in Orr zones at times, probably because people are there to farm mats and it’s just not a very fun place (tough call on it, the design fits but it’s overall just not that fun).
Don’t fall then
