Every time ArenaNet sends me a little something in-game mail, I feel a little appreciated and it feels nice.

Anybody else feel that way?

Yes! No other MMO does this, so that’s why I always say Arenanet is the perfect company… everything they do is awesome, I can’t believe I ever played other mmos!

I feel insulted when they mail me stuff. Like the WvW experience booster, for example. 50% for 15 minutes?!!? Absolutely useless. I would feel less insulted if they just came out and called me ‘stupid’ to my face.

Unfortunately, no, I’m not. I only wish there were a ‘report’ option on that mail. I didn’t ask for charity and if I were to, I surely would not be asking for such a useless item.

I find that pretty hilarious considering the context. If I were to walk up to you and give you a handful of fecal matter, would you be thankful? If you weren’t then I could look at you and say “what a sorry state today’s youth is in it, they are so ungrateful”.

What I find sorry about today’s “youth” is that they often speak, or write, without even the base understanding of what they are communicating about. People like to assign arbitrary definitions to things, then when confronted by the actual definition of things they become irate.

In the above case, why should someone be grateful for something like this. To be grateful is :
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/grateful

a : appreciative of benefits received
b : expressing gratitude <grateful thanks>
2
a : affording pleasure or contentment : pleasing
b : pleasing by reason of comfort supplied or discomfort alleviated

Under 1a this person must receive a benefit, but if they do not use it then it provides no benefit. 1b is a self reference, meaning that it must be in 1a/2a/2c. Obviously it is not 2a, and 2b must relate to 1a. So for a person to feel grateful it must provide either 1)a benefit, 2)a comfort, or 3)remove a discomfort. Now if none of those are true, then this person should not be grateful.

Gamers are the most entitled social group today

But within that social group are MMO players and they’re the worst.

I understand that when you play a subscription every month, you’re entitled to stuff.
But I don’t think people understand the maintenance and development costs of an MMO compared to a single player game. So it boggles my mind that people expect the world out of an MMO, as if every single patch should be bugless and that if it doesn’t cater to one subset of the playerbase, it is an immediate failure.

And here in GW2, we don’t even deal with subscriptions. So it is also surprisingly we have that level of entitlement in this game.

I really think that Elbegast is trolling but it would not surprise me if he isn’t. There are plenty of people that think like him and it’s a shame. Because I know the devs read these threads and probably feel like all their hard work is pointless. It must stink to work in the gaming industry because you very rarely hear tokens of support from happy players, while all the disgruntled players do their best to beat the kitten out of you no matter what good you did.

Yeah, is 15 minutes too short? It is, but I’m not going to complain about a gift. It was unexpected. I wasn’t promised anything. It’s a bonus, even if it won’t affect me significantly.

This rant went too long so I probably strayed off topic..

It’s kinda nice. But it reminds me that one of the few things I don’t like about the game is the lack of communication. Especially playing a game now where it’s a complete 180 experience with developers who post actively in forums and engage the players and explain why things were done and ask for opinions and suggestions.

Here, we have a few CMs that scold you and that’s about it, as far as I can tell.

Here’s a few simple ones:

1) Why would you make the preview be not what the thing looks like?

2) Why did you take an item that I paid money for and break it so it’s not as fun to use? Plush Griffon. Used to swim, now doesn’t swim? Did an intern need a new project so you just let him mess that up without a care in the world? Was Plush Griffon overpowered in WvW by swimming? Was he unfairly always at the top of the sPvP leaderboards? Would could possibly have been so wrong with that one little game item that you actually expended resources and breaking it?

There’s more, and I’m sure everyone has their list of ‘small’ “what-the-hells”, those are a few of mine.

Overall, I’m happy with 99.9% of the game and play. Just the little, ‘crazy cat lady’ things that crop up that drive me nuts, and absolutely no way to get any communication about anything out of them.

I have a feeling you are arguing just for the sake of arguing yet completely missing the point. You get a free item and complain about it? Or even more absurd, compare said free item to fecal matter? I also do not see any anger, passive or otherwise in Jrunyon’s post, which leads me to believe you have misunderstood his/her post. If anything, your post has angry undertones and contains no constructive criticism. Instead I see you bashing Jrunyon because you misunderstood him/her.

They’re just saying it’s a little asinine to complain about generosity. A free item is a free item and it does in fact provide a benefit, provided you use it. If you don’t use it, then whatever; that’s your prerogative but to complain about getting a free item is just a little odd and may resemble that of a troll post, regardless of the poster’s original motives.

As far as youth goes, it has little to do with age. There are plenty of adults with generally negative attitudes. Not saying that’s bad, it’s just the way the world turns.

I think you’ve drawn the wrong conclusion from what I posted. My post wasn’t to defend anyone in particular. Am I grateful for the WvW experience boost? No, because it provides me with nothing. Mine is still in the mail where it will collect dust for the foreseeable future. I’ve earned plenty of ranks in wvw, but mostly the things I do would gain no benefit from this item. I upgrade towers, I escort yaks, I do the boring stuff. None of that would really benefit at all from this item. That is a different discussion though, and one we’ve tried to have with Anet. They’ve mostly ignored that discussion though.

My posts were simply about the language used. If people had said “this guy is rude, and while the item may not be of any use to him I appreciate the gift.” I would completely agree. For me it is a useless item, but for others it is a great item. It is not my place to judge this particular gift. I have enjoyed past gifts though, and I will continue to show my support of Anet through gem purchases.

Consider my post less of an attack on you, and more of me simply trying to point out an inaccuracy. Just ignore the guys post next time, and express your opinion. People may not agree, and they may not like it, you are allowed to have your opinion though. You are, to my knowledge, allowed to express that opinion also.

That’s what 50% boost in EXP for 15 minute is really.

I’m level 80 so what 50% boost do for me? So yes, that’s like Anet handing me a pile of kitten — or in a more polite manner, a piece of trash — so there’s no real reason to be grateful.

The minis gift they sent me is well received because they are worth something.
