Appreciation Thread
- hidden stuff: really love how there are things hidden in the world. there are jumping puzzles and hidden chests, but also tons of dialogues and npcs who may tell you something interesting. For example in the pirate cave in lions arch, you can speak to one of the pirate leaders, and if you are an order of whispers agent, you get an additional dialogue option that makes that npc tell you about the hidden pirate jumping puzzle in LA.
- free content updates: the karka one-time event was awesome, also the whole festive content (haloween, winters day), and the now added super adventure box. Lets see what Flame and Frost: Retrebution will bring us. Also they added fractals, a lot of new weapons and stuff.
I agree. It may have one or two rough edges (what MMo doesn’t?), but overall it’s superb – and as for value for money, OMG!
Especially notable are the zone scaling (you can enjoy every zone, even when you hit max level), and the way the game accommodates and even rewards more people participating in areas and events (“Sure, come join the combat – the more the merrier!”).
OP didn’t play a lot of MMOs apparently.
Anet has done some things right. Art, very much so.
The rest? Degrees of Mediocrity and tbh done before, and done to death.
I play it. I love my Norn, the pretty world and um.. yeah, bout it. It’s something to do.
Well, I have played a lot of MMOs, and this is the first one I’ve really liked, so I guess maybe you don’t know what the OP has played and didn’t play.
WoW…dull as dishwater. No reason for my character to be doing what he was doing. By rewarding players instead of characters, it took the RPG way out of the MMO equation. I didn’t much like WoW at all.
Aion…better than WoW, but when I played it, you HAD TO PvP and I’m a PVe’er. WIthout PVPing you really couldn’t go anywhere in the game at all. In fact you ran out of quests and the only way to level was to grind bosses, until you could get to the PvP that you had to do.
AoC – Nice game, particularly the first 20 levels. Went a bit downhill after that. At any rate, kept crashing on my machine, no matter what I tried, till I couldn’t play it anymore.
DDO – Not even sure why people call this an MMO. It was almost as instanced as Guild Wars 1. Turbine’s Greed made this game a complete turn off for me. Otherwise not too bad.
Lotro – Too much grinding for gear and traits, unless you wanted to spend money in their shop. Again, Turbines greed destroyed that game.
Rift – Probably had the most potential of the games I’d tried, but too little too late by way of what I was looking for in an MMO. More should have been done with the open world, instead of forcing people into dungeons and raids as the only form of progress.
Perfect World – Actually wasnt’t that bad, but it was grindy as hell. Not that you can expect much else from that company.
Eve Online – Great idea, but required far too much of a time commitment to do anything with it. You had to live, eat, breathe and drink the game to enjoy it.
Everquest 2 – Not too bad. Hated the graphics style and it felt way too generic for me.
TSW – Probably my second favorite MMO…nice story and voice acting, but the combat didn’t feel good to me and the choice not to voice the main character left everything a monlogue which got on my nerves fast.
There were others too in that time. Guild Wars 2, for my play style is better than all of them…and not just a little better. Significantly better.
Sure there are problems with Guild Wars 2, like any MMO. But to assume that someone who likes this game hasn’t played other MMOs is just a kittenumption.

Oh don’t get me wrong I did, and alot, Aion/rift/Tera/WoW Reached end game in all of them, but didn’t felt as good, I know GW2 isn’t perfect but it has the most potential.

LOL! Seems like we’ve played a lot of the same games. I’m in agreement with you. Guild Wars 2 probably isn’t a great game. But compared to other MMOs I’ve played, it’s definitely a breath of fresh air.

I think its the first time I’ve ever been in agreement with you.

You left out Guild Wars ;-)

Cause I don’t consider Guild Wars 1 an MMO, that’s why. I did play it for a long time, and next two Guild Wars 2, it’s one of my favorite multiplayer fantasy RPGs. lol

I’ve said several times I think this is a good game, with the potential to become great. It has lots of short-comings. However, unlike you, I think most of those short-comings are to be expected from new MMOs and will be fixed over time.
Please don’t agree with me again, it makes me doubt myself. lol

I don’t know if GW is an MMO or not (and I neither care nor am I intending to resurrect that debate!), but it’s definitely the most fun I’ve ever had online. That’s mainly what matters to me.
I appreciate GW2. The game has spoiled me. I will never again pay for an MMO that roots me in combat on every kitten skill that is not "instant,’ that forces me to race to get to nodes before that other guy, that does not have an option to deposit crafting mats to bank from anywhere, that has the standard quest hub with NPC’s playing yo-yo with you between the hub and the quest area, that does not provide something akin to dynamic events or that charges a sub fee.
I really love this game. I’ve tried other popular MMOs, and for one reason or another they never stuck quote like this game has. That doesn’t mean I don’t take breaks (I just started playing again after 1-2 months of absence), but the fact that it will always be there no matter what is great. It really takes off the pressure. I can play because I want to play.
People gonna complain about minor things, that’s what they always do, but no matter how much they’ll complain that won’t change the fact, that GW2 as a whole is the best MMO RPG ever made.
Wow, this thread got derailed. Whole point of it was to say what about this game you appreciate…and of course someone has to stroll in an crap all over it. Which then sparks debate. Sheesh…
I love the art, the design, the beautiful Tyria that Anet created
I love that each profession has its own identity
I love the constant content updates
I love how excited I get to try new things
I love my Engineer
[TTBH] [HATE], Yak’s Bend(NA)
I’m not paying 15$ a month for this
The best thing about the game, by far.
Thanks Anet.
