Are Tengu coming?
If it does happen it would give me a reason to fix my computer. Soooo… hopes to your theory being true.
That would be cool and awesome, however, lore-wise it wouldn’t make sense for the Tengu to come out due to Zhaitan’s rise and his massive army of undead, especially Claw Island where you try to hold off against tons of Risen, the undead ships that rise up, and especially Blightghast (Tequatl look-alike.)
Same goes for Scarlet’s Invasion on Lion’s Arch and how the Tengu were on high alert attacking and killing anyone or anything that came near their gate. Yeah it’s over now, but there’s still the threat of the Destroyers and whats left of the Risen to deal with before the Tengu will/might consider opening their Dominion of Winds to the rest of Tyria.
I like the idea of a surprise update. But I can’t see it happening any time soon because ANET loves their Sylvari.
Its highly unlikely given that they’ve been working on the China version. The changes to the English client (NA and EU), is mostly long-term projects that finished.
This was said in the developer livestream, something like “we’re working on alot of things all of the time that people don’t know about, and we can’t say anything even though we’d like to” and mostly that these changes were started long ago.
After the Chinese release we will likely see an upsurge of developer activity. So a change like this might appear in living story season 2.
I’m usually really sweet… but this an internet forum and you know how it has to be.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the game and am on a good bit, but they sure do know how to hype up things that turn out to not be quite as awesome as they make it sound. I really don’t think they would want to miss out on a chance to over hype something like a new race!
I wouldn’t mind a new mysterious territory opening up with new things to do. I doubt I’d roll up a Tengu though. Just never cared for them. And if I want to, I can always switch to my Norn and take Raven Form… for a whole 30 seconds once every four minutes.

Maybe in 2020. I doubt they will ever give us something like that =C
It is a cool theory…but it’s also just the same one theory brought up in different forums whenever a patch+sale on char slots are on. I suggest you don’t get your hopes too high.

Hmm…Having the Tengu at the Chinese launch would make sence. That way they’d be able to play with the new race right from the beginning. ‘Course, then it wouldn’t be a new race for them, when they could hold hold off on that and bring it out a s a globally new feature later on.
Why is everyone obsessed with these lame, bird-brains.
I can’t wrap my head around it.

Because the Tengu are awesome. Maybe you have to play through Guild Wars 1 and the GW: Beyond content to full appreciate them though.
That being said, this isn’t happening. Such a big and bold move as this would be well beyond anything ANet currently do with the living story; And if it was happening they’d have already hyped the crap out of it for extra publicity. As there’s been no mention, it isn’t happening.
From this monday’s interview over at mmorpg.com:
Will we see them close themselves off from the world? As things clear, you’ll see them maybe come out a little bit, but I think in the interest of their preservation, they’re going to be a little bit wary of anybody they encounter. From a lore standpoint, we still think they’re a really interesting and intriguing race and culture that we want to explore when the time is right.

Followed the living story? it’s after what happens in the personal story. Zhaitan was killed at the end of the personal story and now a new dragon is rising and maybe other enemies. I think it’s time for Tengu to come out.
And I HATE surprise releases on that magnitude because they are kittening stupid.
This game exist in a competitive market. People come and go. Staying visible and relevant in the gamer awareness takes constant work. Committing a huge investment in creative man-hours to a project like Tengu without maximizing your gains in awareness and player attraction is how good companies become empty buildings. Media presence takes coordination and a fair bit of advance planning.
You do not hide selling points under a heap of leaves. “We’re adding a new race!” is a BIG selling point.
Daydream all you like, but its not going to be something they spring on the live servers by surprise. Frankly I don’t think their test server information security is good enough that they could do something that big by surprise if they wanted to.
I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”

Here’s a cool theory that I was thinking about for fun. The Tengu are coming out in the feature patch. They haven’t put them in the game files yet because they don’t want them to be data minded. Just stop and think for a second. The starting areas and cities are being made into mega servers (to handle tons of new characters being created), theres a sale on character slots and they just released the avian/bird mini pack.
Could this Tuesday be the day we see Tengu on the character creation screen.
Ive being saving ranger for this!Cool picture I found below.
Except the starter areas and cities are not part of the MegaServer roll-out, so I don’t think Tengu will be part of the patch. If, and when, they may come, it will surely be either part of the Living Story, or however they do ‘expansion’-type content releases.
Discounted character slots: So people can rush a couple toons to 80 before trait system changes on the 15th, discount it by 20% and more people will be inclined to snap a few up. Some will grab 1 or 2 just for extra storage space
Would think we would see new explorable zones well before we see a new playable race.

That would mean still another year or so before we get tengu!
Bc they’re not gonna put in on hold just for a month..
fingers crossed for tuesday
Lots of new mechanics lvl/buildwise, and a new race would defiantly incentive to start new characters.
I hate to burst your bubble, but devs have said already that this patch won’t have an expansion-like content like new races, regions, professions…

They would not release such a big feature without hyping it up for months and drumming up interest for it.
When it comes, if it comes, it will be a HUGE marketing event.
Personally i’m against any more beast races, since they would only make it even more complicated to create new armor sets because of even more clipping issues.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.
Hmm…imo the only clue that really leans toward the Tengu arriving are the avian minis. But I don’t think they’ll be playable characters. That’s something that Anet would have revealed to us and marketed. It would be a big draw for new & returning players.
However, I can see them emerging from behind their wall in LA. LA is a blank slate more or less for the devs to work with. Maybe the Tengu will emerge and expand their little slice of land, fortify the gates to LA, and begin a new LS chapter of diplomacy and tension.

I like Sylvari and since both Tengu and Sylvari fit with the lore of GW it will be nice. Remember, Ventari was a Centaur you meet in GW1 and Ronan is a human you meet in EotN expansion so the lore for Sylvari was started.
An expansion could be also for a Sylvari LS where we try to find the 2nd Pale Tree which was discussed in one PS branch from the Sylvari.

In GW1 there were 3 types of Tengu. If they do become a playable race, it will be interesting to see which one. Also, this would be a connection to Cantha but since A.Net was told not to do any ‘Oriental’ Theme, it would be hard to go there.

There were actually 5 tribes: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Tengu
However, apperently, they have united in the time between GW1 and GW2: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Tengu

You do know, the Tengu live in Kryta and not in Cantha right? http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dominion_of_Winds
Unlikely. They would have announced it.
The main marketing purpose of the feature patch plus sale in the first place is as a direct competitor to the newly released The Elder Scrolls Online – they need to prevent player egress, and hopefully get a few new ones.
Adding something as substantial as a whole new race with all the racial quests… that would make it so much easier to interest the players so they bet on GW2 rather than hopping on TESO.
P.S. No way in hell I’m giving up GW2 time to play that…
On April 15, we get a feature patch. Later, we get a content patch. I’d guess that if ANet does add Tengu, it will be in the content patch later this year.
Adding a new race would be a major effort by ANet, but it might generate a lot of goodwill with Cantha-lovers. I wouldn’t bet on Tengu coming in, but I wouldn’t bet against it either.

They also live in Cantha – you meet them on the starter island in in Kaineng City – http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Tengu
Also try the story of Master Togo, if you got the History add on, explains the Tengu war with the Humans.
It was an april 1 joke, there’s no confirmed tengu expansion for the future.
I like the idea of a surprise update. But I can’t see it happening any time soon because ANET loves their Sylvari.
Whenever I look at the concept art of how Sylvari was first meant to look vs how it ended up looking, I really do hope they take more time with their new race.
At first, Sylvari were meant to be some kind of evil looking, Entish-like dark Elves. What they are is: colourful trees.

Where does it say that? I went through the lore and no where does it say they left Cantha. Just because they say united, doesn’t mean there are no Tengu in Cantha. You are over reaching there.

yeah, the armor clipping issues would be complicated to deal with if Tengu were playable. There aren’t really too many Tengu npc’s though, and I haven’t seen them with a whole lot of armor.
Even the Hylek have a decent looking set of armor for them, but I really don’t like the look of them. Koda wouldn’t be too difficult because they use the same model as Norns.

There is a link for the various professions of Tengu in GW1. In GW1 they were really a pain to kill.
well, Tengu were really only a pain in the Shiverpeak Mountains and other high level areas, which made them more difficult to fight. And of course Hard Mode doesn’t make it any easier. I hated fighting the dwarves a lot and also in the other expansions, especially in Cantha, they were harder just because there were ritualist and assassin tengu as well…so yeah

Well, for one the Movement of the World says:
Usoku unified Cantha behind a strong national identity and began to drive out all non-humans.
The wiki page on Tengu says:
When Zhaitan awoke in 1219 AE, in an event the tengu call the Great Tsunami, the tengu of the world saw it as a sign to return to Tyria. It was a descendant of Talon Silverwing that led the charge through Zhaitan’s risen forces, and when the tengu reached land, they built their Dominion atop the island once known as Sanctum Cay, and unified their clans into the four modern houses, one for each of the winds.
So no, I don’t I’m overreaching.
Please stop playing with my heart.

Didn’t ANET put the conclusion of the living story in the game file a couple of weeks before it actually ended ? Unfortunately, I doubt they’d be that careful with that.
And knowing how they love to overhype things, something like the Tengu becoming a playable race (which for some reason quite a lot of players around here want) won’t be stealthy release.
The day they decide to do so, you are probably going to get a few hints 6 months before, followed by 2 months of hyping it.
I’m 95% sure it wont happen this patch lol. But hopefully we will see them playable in a year or 2.
