So there are alot of players voicing there concern over the current DR situation, especially those who are level 80 and hoping to get set pieces from the Orr region.

I am curious if Anet has a plan to reduce them, remove them, or are they going to remain ? If DR was implemented mainly to combat bots/gold farmers for the short term then i would assume that they are only a short term solution and Anet has a more long term goal to stop the bots/gold farmers. If that’s the case i am hoping that we can say goodbye to DR and move back into how GW2 was prior to the Sep.18th update.

Maybe this was posted somewhere that i missed, but i am pretty up to date on all things GW2, so i have yet to see any comment dealing solely with DRs. By the way, i am referring to the DRs that affect the open world PvE and DEs not dungeons which i have already seen mention from developers.

They havent said much on the subject. In a situation like this I think they would want to keep their cards close to their chests so as not to give any info to the enemy.

But DR is far from the bug bear people make it out to be.

DR was in GW1 and I imagine it will remain in GW2.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they modified it to be less harsh though given the amount of negative feedback they’ve gotten from it. Especially once they get a handle on all those gold sellers and bots running around.

Where?
Afaik, they have said NOTHING about it and ninja-d it into the game 2 WEEKS AFTER LAUNCH.
Where was it during the betaweekends?

If this was a temporary solution to the botting problem, however, then I would be satisfied in the fact that it would be removed at a later date. As it stands, normal players are being punished and botting is still at large.

I would refrain from giving them names, their feelings get hurt (i.e. calling the White Knights).

And has been stated, ANET are mum on this subject and on this supposed ‘solution’ to botting.

Are you only in Orr for 15 minutes at a time ? After 20-30 minutes you will be hit with DR in orr because all of the mob types are the same classification (risen) Claiming that you have not been hit by DR in Orr is either disingenuous or you do not spend over 20 minutes of time in Orr.

With Orr aside, this is still an issue in all areas except for those who are constantly on the move in the PvE world.

I am not really sure how this can even be defended, it is such a punitive system that punishes honest players more than bots/gold farmers.

The across the board diminishing returns on loot is negatively impacting the trade post. imho.

On two toons, I was able to use the poor amount of money from wvw or pve as I leveled to upgrade gear via the trade post every 10 to 20 levels. I was able to buy a full new set of green or yellow gear. I got my first rare set around 60. Greens prior to that.

On my first toon, I was able to buy an 80 rare set and some exotic weapons of each type. Then the first round of DR changes went in, my second toon can’t afford that at 80.

Then more DR changes and loot grinding changes, and with the current lower loot drop rates and diminishing returns systems, my third toon finds that prices have gone up by a factor of 5 or more on gear at certain level thresholds and cannot afford to purchase a lvl 40 masterwork set as the previous two could. She also can’t really “Farm” or purchase the “rarer” discovery mats to even grind her crafting up enough to make a level appropriate set.

On off levels it can still be much cheaper than the multiples of 5 are off now, even with crafted gear but the itemization is strange. I find I am earning less money and getting less non node based materials to work on crafting, and going to trade post to search for mats to buy for discover, they also sky rocketed.

The DR system is bad, If I want to raise my crafting and I know certain types of mobs have a chance to drop wool scrap or bone chips, when I could have spend an hour grinding out enough mats, I now can’t and I have to change areas or kill other things or farm loot bags.

My high level toons rely on my low level toons to even have a chance of certain mats dropping because when gear drops that I can melt or mats drop, its relative to their level more often than not. There is good and bad to this design mechanic but the DR system is making the bad outweigh the good.

I really don’t want to have to game the auction house to make money as a meta-game, which I know many players love doing and are successful at and is partially driving up some prices. Most games have a better balance there. When this game launched it had a better balance there. A month later that balance has skewed poorly for the new and casual player experience, imho.

“I wouldn’t mind if DR is here to stay, but I would definitely like to see it refined. At the moment it is affecting people who are not farming, which seems unnecessarily intrusive.”

I think it’s a combination of human nature and hasty implementation. It is probably bugged or overtuned, leading to DR to kick in too soon or last too long compared to what the devs intended. But to tune it they need data, and time to analyze that data.

The other side is human nature. A lot of people here probably aren’t old enough, but when I was young there were a lot of Volkswagon Bugs on the road, and someone taught me the game where you yell “punchbug!” every time you see one and, well, punch the other guy in the arm. Before this I never really noticed them, there are a lot of cars on the road and while the bugs have a distinctive look, they never really registered to me as anything but another car.

After hearing about the game, though, suddenly “punchbugs” were everywhere! A 10 minute ride would yield anywhere from two to twenty of them. I couldn’t NOT see them for years after, until time took most of them off the road altogether.

I think this is happening with DR. If it affects you and you don’t know about it, you might get bored and log off when you’re not getting a lot of “stuff” from enemy kills and whatever, but it won’t really be something you think about. Knowing about DR makes you evaluate every drop, did I get less than the last drop? Should I have gotten something better? And you can’t unthink it. Suddenly every time you get three kills in a row with no rewards you’re convinced DR has kicked in and further play is “useless” because you won’t get any stuff.

It’s just human nature.

The diminishing returns system is extremely disappointing.

Example:

In Orr the chain for Grenth was started. The group failed the last event, and the chain restarted. So we try again, and we failed yet again. So we give one more try.

At this point diminishing returns for karma have already set it. At the end, we failed for the third time probably because of lack of players. We only get about 34 karma.

Most player have quit trying at this point. Why should they continue? We already were not getting any loot, because the cap in Orr is reached ridiculously fast. And now we were getting no karma either.

So why bother to try? We would just have wasted our time.

As it is right now this system is punishing legitimate players. ArenaNet, is this what you want? To force players to quit the game? Because it’s working brilliantly.

Currently, doing pve at 80, if you want some ‘descent’ loot is: log in, go to Orr for 30 minutes, log out. Meah

It’s a good system, I like it. Makes getting things take a whole lot longer as it should. One shouldn’t have a full set of anything in a few days or weeks play. Why back in the day when I played Everquest it might take MONTHS to get an optimum drop in it.

MMO’s are meant to be played for years not minutes.

I’m relatively new to the whole MMO thing, but one of the common complaints I’ve seen about other MMOs is that they give out rewards for little or no effort, and people reminisce about how epic their quests were in UO, EQ1, AC etc. There are often posts wishing there were MMOs like that nowadays where you had to really work for something and people didn’t hit level cap in three days and spend the next six months sitting around polishing their Epic Thunderswords of Awesome.

This isn’t that game, but it’s definitely two steps in that direction.

I would say you comments are in danger of confusing “effort” with “complexity”.

WoW gives out tonnes of loot, but the stuff people chase, which they keep turning up for over and over, is the stuff from raids. Raids take loads of effort, in that you have to get in a team, do your part in that team and put hours and hours in at the keyboard.

However, you can do it all more or less on auto-pilot. The raid leader tells you the simple formula for completing each section, and you follow your part of that formula. It’s high effort, but requires almost no thinking.

I would say GW2 PvE is cut from the same cloth. Sorry, it might be heresy to some, but the inherent problem with PvE is that it MUST follow a formula. As soon as one person on the internet works out the trick to a given thing, that means noone else has to think.

I do believe Anet have been very creative with their PvE. The quests are much more diverse and engaging. But for me, you can really only keep players thinking in PvP, because there they have to adapt their tactics to human enemies, who in turn adapt and keep things lively.

There any positive reasoning behind not replying to the community about the open world DRs ?

All this does in my opinion is give Anet a black eye when it comes to community relations. This does not go in line with the MMO Manifesto that Anet was hawking to the community during the spring/summer.

I know i am coming across as negative, especially if others have read some of my recent posts, but this DR aspect has completely deflated my enthusiasm for this game, i know i am not the only one, and i know there are plenty of others who don’t even bother with the forums that feel the same as i do.

I want GW2 to be the new BMOC (big man on campus) for MMO’s, i just do not see how this can be done with such punitive measures.

Please, do not begin to tell me i am part of a vocal minority, look at all the posts talking about this subject, with a minor few, most of the players hate it.

Mind you, it wouldn’t hurt for them to put something placatory out like “we hear you and will take it into consideration.”

I don’t PVP much, issues and advances regarding PVP don’t really interest me so I can’t comment about it. But as far as a PVE game goes, as I said it’s not “there” yet but moving in that direction.

MMO’s dirty secret is that not everyone wants to raid. I was brand new to MMOs when I went to Rift’s forums and saw someone write about how their guild has the first raid boss, the Dragon Greenscale, on “farm” status. He sounded bored with the raid… I had a mental image of a bunch of warriors trudging reluctantly towards the dungeon with swords propped against their shoulders, walking like the guy from the old donut store commercials. “Time to kill Greenscale again…”

I knew then I would never be a raider. The Dragons in rift are avatars of alien gods who eat entire worlds… killing one should be the highlight of the game, not something you do every Tuesday night.

Don’t forget diminishing returns now is in effect on dynamic events. I’ve had it trigger -while in a party with my roommate- doing one chain event on Cursed shore. We went to fight the Claw of Jormag (which was bugged, as usual), then ended up doing a event near the area instead.

Still on the DR somehow. So not only can people not gather their own crafting materials, they can’t even gather karma for the outrageously priced cultural karma/Orr gear.

It isn’t like Dungeons are fun, and even then, if they where you got diminishing returns on that too.

DR is just symptomatic of a bigger problem among Anet’s philosophy. Look at the latest round of changes. Look at the current “this content is disabled”. You don’t need to throw that in our faces, we already know that on top of not getting loot and karma and coin, that content was disabled. We already know. Who at 80 is expecting it to yield a drop?

Now, if you’re trying to capture Arah (for example), you may fail once (fair enough), but by the second time going, you get diminished returns on karma, coin and XP and loot drops off to, literally nothing. Let me just reiterate to someone who may not understand the gravity of that. You’ll end up killing hundreds upon hundreds of mobs and event bosses and get nothing over a period of hour(s) if you do the whole chain.

Then at the end, you loot the grandest, most epic looking loot chest in any game ever and it yields 1 green and 3 blues <- not enough to cover your death(s) if you failed once.

i spent 3-4 hours capturiing and holding Arah over the weekend for effectively nothing. It helped a few people who were doing dungeons. So I went to farm the normal events and in 30 minutes made more coin and karma than 3-4 hours than Arah event chain. It’s twisted broken the way it works now.

Tried for hours on Grenth only to find the chain is broken over consecutive days, which is just…. -_- There are so many issues, DR is soemthing they really need to rethink and put effort into fixing other areas of the game;

BTW Human starter zone and Norn starter have multiple broken DE and skill challenges—-still!

Yeah, what’s up with that? Is that because of DRs too? Did a long event chain in Orr today (main event?) and got four blues from the epic looking chest at the end.. the loot I got during the event was better…

i would assume that they are only a short term solution and Anet has a more long term goal to stop the bots/gold farmers.

Short term can vary from person to person. How long this short term is, we will never know.

e.g. They expect this game to run for at least 10 years. Having a DR system implemented for a 8months can look like a short term situation in the overall picture.
