Hi all,
I really enjoy big fights against dragons and I’d like to do them whenever I can, however I think that at the current state of the game, it’s just a waste of money and totally not worth it, here is why.
As you may know, currently there’s no way to know if a dragon has spawned in any point of the map, so you are forced to travel from a WP to another and check all possible place where the dragons spawn. If you are lv80, this costs a considerable amount of silver, and there is a large chance to not encounter any boss and just waste your money. This make me really upset, at the point that I didn’t partecipate in a boss fights since 2-3 weeks, even if I really like them.
What’s your position about dragon fights? Do you do them regularly? If yes, how do keep track of spawn time? Do you think they are a waste of money?

Feel free to share your thoughts and sorry for bad english.

I only do the dragons when I happen to be in the area at the right time. They were fun the first time, especially Jormag, but I don’t see the fun in repeating them on a daily basis, let alone keep track of the timer (I hate the timer. It takes the D out of DE).

People kill them for the loot. Generally not for fun.

No, dragons are fun. You get loot and it ‘s a major world event, with a lot of people participating, and you clearly see how many people are on the map currently, which is exciting, you know you are not alone in this. Besides the whole fight is thrilling, with some great music and nice combat from the dragon. I’ve only fought Tequatl so far, so don’t know about the others. Dragons rule, they should make the randomly appear on the map, maybe burn a village or something like that, before we go and fight them.

Guild wars should be war between orders, because orders are guilds too.

Guild Wars Temple’s Dragon Timer covers most, if not all of the servers. It’s been a great help to me and is quite accurate!

The Shatterer actually flies over a majority of the map in between dying, I remember my first time up there I ran around trying to spot it every time I would hear it roaring.

Guild is the best source for dragon news. Other than that, I just stand at the dragon spawn, and play WvW all the time, and if I crash or something, I check if the dragon is there.

For the time you sink into them you would probably get better loot just killing level 80 trash mobs, for those that do it for the loot. That is assuming you can kill at a decent speed.

I don’t go out of my way to do them. I’ve killed them plenty of times. I haven’t gotten a single rare from boss chests in about 15 events so I’m pretty much done with them.

Really? That’s odd, I got 4 rares from 5 fights, one time I even got 2 rares, both perfect weapons for my class. You must be doing something wrong.

Not sure how one could do something wrong in regards to luck. I used to get a decent amount of rares, but like I said, I’ve had a very long dry spell. I get a rare medallion here and there but I don’t really count those since they’re just as much garbage as all the blues/greens they come with.

I mean maybe you didn’t do enough damage? I believe this is the primary factor when calculating the odds for the rare loot. If one would just stand there and contribute one range rifle shot, he wouldn’t get anything , I guess.

I was wondering that same thing. Does total amount of damage dealt have an effect on your rewards from the chest?

If that’s the case, does it only factor in damage dealt to the dragon, or does it factor in damage dealt to summoned minions or summoned structures as well? On that same note, shouldn’t contributions such as healing and support be added in as well?

Don’t forget that the starting zone bosses also give loot chests that are equal to those given by the dragons. You may be scaled down but the loot rewarded is your actual level. Those alone give you 8 lovely loot boxes to go after and I’m sure there are more out and about.

I know for sure that contribution matters. Once I only got there at the event in the last 3 minutes, and I got nothing. which is logical. I’m afraid that support and reviving the players also don’t count toward the contribution, so the best option is to deal max damage to the dragon itself.

Guild wars should be war between orders, because orders are guilds too.

For me it’s the thrill of the fight rather than loot that attracts me. The Shatterer is particularly fun, with the way he flies around rawwwring between fights and the earthquakes that erupt in the area.

And these critters are impressive. I’ve even had a family member watch over my shoulder during a battle with Tequatl (“Taco”, as he’s known on my server) and say, “Wow!”

It true in general for large events especially in high level areas, especially in Orr where traveling on foot is at best risky and tedious.
Often there is no way to see if there are people at an event even if it is nearby (ie Altar of Lies). You can ask but if there are people doing the event they are probably to busy to notice map chat and/or to busy to answer.

Same on Dragonbrand. When a dragon spawns or the meta-chain kicks off, map chat tends to be flooded with announcements, complete with linked WPs. I’m never concerned that I’ll miss a dragon event if I’m at least somewhere on the map.

I always get gold for these boss events, not difficult to do. Pretty sure if you can open the chest you get the same loot table as anyone else, and the same odds for items. It’s not that I’m not getting loot, it’s that I haven’t gotten any rares from chests in while, just greens/blues/yellow medallions. Used to be I could go to the Wayfarer Foothills boss and I’d usually get at least 1 rare from the chest – had similar luck with dragons; just not anymore which is why I tend to not bother with them. I do priests though just for the sheer number of trash mobs for the events which tend to be far more profitable than what’s in the chest.

Firstly – as posted before – there is a way to find out when a dragon spawns, it simply depends on the community if the list is being kept updated. gw2events.de is a great resource for eu servers.
Secondly, what is everybodies problem with traveling costs? Even if I start in Orr and go for the triple dragon tour, I will be back at Orr having spent about 12s. 12s for three chances of finding rares, a bunch of xp, karma and the general fun of reading the chat while waiting for the dragons / dancing on mortars.

I don’t follow them around anymore like a tour groupie as I did in the beginning but I still visit them regurarly to say hi

I leave a character parked at the spawn spot, and then log in to them when the timer says it’s about to spawn.

It’s an inevitable win. I don’t think you could lose a dragon fight if you tried. Eat your tarts!

It’s not a waste of money if you a) are going to the area anyway or b) don’t die a lot. It can however be a waste of time. You can really dominate any event with a chest at the end and still get junk, so I don’t believe it’s based on damage dealt, providing you get a gold medal I think it’s all the same chances. This is however speculation so I could be wrong.

“meta” this, “meta” that. Please stop saying the word “meta”.

i kill them for the chest fingers crosses i get something good however it often turns out i used 5-8silver on waypoint and the reward was worth less. i still do them and it mostly turns out the opposite. i wish they would change position and be a bit more deadly so you wouldn’t have to press 1 then wait a few mins then dodge his aoe and repeat until dead. right now its just another mob to grind.

People are very nice about rezzing one if the unthinkable happens, even when one is underleveled for an encounter as my thief is for the Claw’s fight.
