Dyes like white, black, celestial, the limited-time dyes, are 20g and above. I find this to be a bit much. I wondering what the rest of the community thinks. Should these be so expensive (and thus a status symbol)? Or are they so expensive that it’s not worth buying?

Of course they aren’t. If they were ‘too expensive’ then no one would buy them and the price would come down until people did.

The demand for celestial/white/black/abyss is so high that people can sell them at these prices easily. If the demand was lower, or if there were more sellers competing, then the price would go down.

The Fire/Frost dyes are another perfect example of real world economy as they are a consumable item (‘destroyed’ upon use) that have a /very/ limited supply since they can’t be obtained anymore. Thus the 50G+ prices.

The new achievement rewards are generating a crazy influx of gold too, so I expect the prices of pretty much everything to go up for the next month or so. Once the influx of achievement rewards dies down a bit (as back-logged people catch up) prices will normalize again – although I expect the rare dyes to stay about where they are.

Nah. They’re expensive because they’re really rare, and the most “pure”, I guess? Dyes of specific colors. Like Celestial and White are the cleanest, whitest dyes..Abyss is the blackest black dye…etc. And on the trading post, everything is supply and demand, so if nobody bought them at those prices, they wouldn’t be sold at those prices.

Guild Wars 1 was the same way, the highly sought after dyes were expensive and rightfully so. The GW series is all about looks, why else would they keep pushing out new skins and new dyes for us gobble up. I personally have no problem with this.

Why is this so surprising, these colors are always the most expensive in any mmorpg ever created it’s a fact of mmo development.

which is why you should always buy them at the game’s launch when they are dirt cheap, I bought all my white, celestial, abyss, illumination etc. back when they were all less than 1g each go me muahaha muiaahaha muiahaha

Black/White are always the most expensive colors of any game ever.

Special dyes like Flame and Frost are expensive not only because they are limited, but also because they physically alter how the armor is shaded. They are not the same as any other ‘red’ or ‘blue’ dye, and anyone who says so obviously did not preview them in the game.

To be fair, 20g is not really all that hard to make. Also, these are not just any dyes they are the most sought after…

They are expensive, but there are much less expensive alternatives you can buy. Eventually you will have plenty of gold to spend and it won’t seem like its so expensive.
