Are gathering nodes changing intentionally?
That’s the least they could do.
Anet definitely do move them deliberately, but I’m not sure how often or when.
In the early days there were a lot of bots that were programmed to run or teleport to the location of a node, harvest it and then move on to the next one. Moving the nodes around stops this happening by requiring the programmers to find new nodes and re-program all their bots so frequently that it’s (hopefully) not worth doing.
As I said I’m not sure how frequently they’re supposed to move, or if it’s supposed to be random. I suspect we’re not supposed to know because it’s another way to make it harder for botters.
But generally the nodes should be within the same general area. If you go to the location it was at before and check your map you should be able to see the new location.

They change when a new build is applied.

They generally don’t move except when there is a new build(server reset). There are some exceptions which might be caused by the zone crashing or emptying out. Recently I noticed the nodes Malchor’s Leap moved without a new build but it also coincided with the broken events for Temple of Dwayna being reset.
The locations of nodes are also not truely random. There is a static set of possible spawn locations for nodes and a random subset of that is selected to spawn when the server starts. That is the case for metal nodes and plant node anyway. Haven’t paid as much attention to trees.
The randomization might affect some bots but they wouldn’t have affect the teleporting ones much because of the above. They would just need to record the list of locations and then revisit all of them each time there is a change. Since they are teleporting around that wouldn’t take very long.
They have been moving for a VERY long time, I believe right from the start. It used to be common for players to call out the current location of nodes.
There are a few that stay, like the ori node in south sun near the champ, but far more that change positions. It is intentional and not a bug.
As far as I’ve seen as an explanation on the forum before, the nodes move for one reason, the map was empty. The map is emptied when no one is in there and whenever they have an update. When the map is empty it ‘disappears’ and when it reappears when someone then enters the map, the nodes reset.
Malchor’s leap might be the only one that empties out occasionally and that also has a node tracker kept on it. The only practical way to test this theory would be to track nodes on a low population server and a low use map and see if this happens.

On Desolation the only map (out of all the maps with a daily chest event) I see this happening frequently is Mount Maelstrom. The fastest I’ve seen was something like I do the golem event, grab a few platinum, switch to another character for a different event then go back to Mount Maelstrom and it has already changed.
It is very easy to notice the node movement right now because of the toxic seedling patches but it was always easy tell in Mount Maelstrom.

Maybe it was Mount Maelstrom that I keep reading about the nodes moving, not Malchor’s. That map might be far enough off the beaten path to occasionally empty out, even if it’s only for a few seconds.

I see the nodes on frost gorge changing all the time, and that map is never empty with the champ trains running. The nodes also change all the time on queensdale as well.

I do Frostgorge runs for ori and ancient wood every day and the only times I see the nodes change there is after an update. I have alts parked at a node at the end of each days run and when I log back on the next day, they are still beside the node. None of the ones on the map have moved.

Funny, the ones on my server change all the time. Sometimes they are right next to one of the champs, then across the map by where jormag spawns. Never seem to be in the same spot twice.
They change when a new build is applied.
Ori and Ancient move for new builds like Facepunch said. They’re usually in the same place for a week at a time though. Most all the other nodes move daily, although MM always has that one rich platinum vein off in the water by the golem. Timberline Falls has 2 of the other rich plat veins, and Dredgehaunt Cliffs has like 2-3 rich iron veins that move around a bit :P
I run my 5 alts through Ori/Anient node runs, and they’re always in the same place until a new build comes up.
T6 nodes only move during new builds.
most rich veins are in pre-determined locations, although a few float around
Normal nodes seem to move daily.

What server are you on? Could it be one that is low population and that map empties out sometime during the off hours?
They used to change weekly or on patch days, has this changed? because it was still once a week last i played?
I’ve never known nodes to shuffle except for when a new build happens. Southsun being the only exception. If the zone does reset when no person exists in it like Astral Projections said, thats the only viable reason i can think of. Either that, or the zone crashed twice in two days. :\

Was always under the impression nodes changed location every week.

Hmmm idk. That one is listed very high.
All I know is that I never see the FG ori/ancient wood nodes change sites unless there is an update of some kind. Once I find them, I make my route and I don’t have to look again until the next update, no matter how long it is.
Edit: I use this source here and as of the time this comment was posted, the nodes on the maps I’ve seen haven’t changed sites since the last update. http://gw2nodes.com/index.php
