Are the phone apps still being built?
No, it was pretty much cancelled.
Instead, they will one day release an API so that the community can build their own apps. They probably will release a demo for the API however, which will probably be a simple version of the “extended experience” they originally showed off.
Then why are they hiring people with mobile device development experience?
To develop an API?
To develop an API?
No, that’s the beauty of an API, you don’t need knowledge about the system that will be using the API. You only need knowledge about the system the API will be unlocking.

Where’d you get this info? I’ve seen people still asking about this and never have I seen an official reply with this kind of information.

I see. That is a bit curious then.
it hasnt been cancelled just pushed back the people who were working on it are working on other things first. it was talked about in an interview resantly i would link it if i new were it was
They didn’t straight out say the development of the mobile app was cancelled. However, when asked about it, they shifted to talking about the API. Since their app would be based on the API which is not yet released, the app would have to be put on hold until the core of the API is finished. With that in mind, their first app, assuming they make one, will most likely come out along with the API as sort of a demo.
Since the API is designed to allow the community to build their own apps, the original extended experience probably won’t happen. What’s the point after all, when a dedicated player could make a better one at no cost to ArenaNet, where they could then feature it to further popularize it.
The original interview:
Q: I was pretty excited about the announcement of the Mobile and Web Apps, from the blog post it seemed like a much more complex project than your traditional MMO Companion App. Will the Apps be ready for launch day?
A: For launch we won’t have any GW2 apps available for use for players. However, soon after launch we’ll be launching a robust app development program in conjunction with our community that should allow for the development of some truly spectacular GW2 app and website development. We’ll discuss this more post ship, right now we’re focused on making the release of the game the greatest it can be.
Yeah it’s dead one of the biggest reasons i bought this game was because of that. It would have been nice if they let people know prior to buying. I miss the one for Rift, it was nice to have a lottery where you could scratch off or roll for free currency for in game items every couple of hours. I liked playing that coming back to the game and buying the things I wanted to enhance my gameplay. Or chatting with friends about the day while they were running around the world, it would have been nice to see that occur in Tyria.
There was a thread about this recently. A dev replied that the phone app has been put on a temporary hold while they work on more important things. In other words, no one is working on it at the moment, but it’s still on the to do list.
A dev recently talked about this. He stated they had to move the people that were working on it to help with fixing the game. So currently no one is working on it, but it is something they still have plans for.
Ok, thanks for the info. I have been curious about it for awhile.
Going forward, we definitely have plans on the table for discussion in the near future, to at some point address the issue of starting to plan for beginning to conceptualise a mobile API.

I’m going to strongly disagree with that. The more you know about potential client apps, the better you can design your API to handle their needs.
Making a mobile app API without knowing anything about how mobile apps work is a ridiculous proposition.
