Hi! No i’m not a perv, but I just haven’t seen interracial couples in the game.
I’m not trying to start anything but I was just wondering are there like norn/charr , charr/human, sylvari/human idk relationships? Or do other races just naturally not think of each other in a more than friends or sexual way? I just haven’t seen it stated anywhere and was wondering.

Thanks!

Well, have you met Logan and Rytlock yet?

On a more serious note, it’s been said the races are not cross-fertile, so probably nothing more serious than “like family” except maybe in the case of sylvari. Remember, they’re all about new experiences and trying things out to build the Dream. Though true love is probably beyond their grasp.

Frankly and logically, there should be. If people can fall in love with ugly people because the person is a great person, personality wise, then why not a 10 foot tall hulking charr with 4 inch claws, or a sylvari? Obviously its easier for norn/humans/sylvari, since theyre all humanoid…

But seriously, if Mass Effect can make it work out, GW2 should too.

They are also infertile within species, so neither race nor gender should make any difference for them.

There was something that a staff member wrote WAY BACK (before launch I think) about some sylvari “experimenting”, especially some of the first borns.

Here’s what people thought of GW1 when it first came out: http://tinyurl.com/bntcvyc
“A release is 7 days or less away or has just happened within the last 7 days…
These are the only two states you’ll find the world of Tyria.”

Well, yes, the sylvari are a special case if you’re talking reproduction. They’re just plain weird like that. Which, probably, is why they tend to be wooden when it comes to emotional scenes that I’ve seen them in. (Pun totally unintended. Cross my heart and hope someone else dies.)

I’d say at least some of it comes from them being children (dream can impart knowledge, but i don’t think it can be a substitute for emotional maturity), that are imitating emotions stolen from other races.
It may be a little bit different with still-living firstborn, though, seing as they are older and might have developed some emotions of their own.

If Caithe and Trahearne are any examples . . . seems they’re still kind of struggling with that whole “complex emotion” thing. And the Nightmare Court doesn’t seem to get it either.

Lack of cross-fertility would help explain a taboo on cross-species relationships if there is one. That’s how it worked in the real world, we taboo’d everything that wasn’t useful for expansion. Some behaviours that used to be taboo in the real world don’t seem to be a big deal in Tyria, such as homosexuality, but I don’t know if that has to mean they’re also more open to anything else, or if it’s just a reflection of developments in the real world. I tend to believe the latter, because the Sylvari make a big point of gender not being important, while none of the other races do the opposite.

I’m not sure how well a relationship with any other race would go over in the Asuran society. They seem to be highly xenophobic. Similarly, the charr society doesn’t seem to be very forgiving and it seems like romantic attraction to a human might be seen as a weakness. I also don’t even really remember many friendships between charr and humans being mentioned, on the other hand there are quite a few between charr and norns. However if charr sexuality works anything like feline sexuality in the real world, any romantic relationship would probably end in tears (multiple kinds of).

My Edit: The Mod edit removed a few parallels to the real world, without which this post makes little sense. I’d like to apologize but I can’t really make my point if I can’t even mention similar behaviours in the real world, and how society deals with them.

They are different species, not races right?

Or am i incorrect?

Race refers to a group with common (usually biological) features. So race is still correct, but I can understand why you might think not. Consider that we are the ‘human race’, which is because we all share the same features, so anything that is different to humans but shares features within a group is also a race.

The word itself can be used rather loosely, and is used rather loosely so I understand your confusion. But it is right :P

-snip-

I wouldn’t say the Asura are xenophobic. They have no problems with the other races as evidence by their love of using them as labour, experimenting on them, studying them etc. They just view themselves as vastly superior. Which is itself of course a reason why they probably wouldn’t fall in love with members of any of the other races, they place such a massive importance on intellect which they see as something only truly possessed by Asura that I can’t see them loving anything non-Asuran.
That being said, they MIGHT potentially show affection for Skritt, who can be insanely smart. But of course the second that Skritt was alone the intellect would be gone.

Actually, asura view skritt as an epidemic that needs to be exterminated. Back when they lived underground, this is exactly what they did. It was only after the other surface-races started objecting to the asura genociding an intelligent race that the asura stopped doing it (at least outside of their own lands).

Still, asura view skritt with disgust, so I would reckon that no asura would ever fall for a skritt’s charm.

Anyway, the only instances where I’ve seen this referred to in game were when a human used the (for him)derogatory term “Charr lover”, and I think a dialogue where a human talked about thinking an Asura girl was coming on to him.

I guess interspecies relationships in Tyria are about as rare or common as interracial relationship are in our societies.

you are halfway off, races actually refer to organisms with singular phenotypical sets of characteristics that can reproduce with different members of the same species, including other races of that species and producing offspring that is still fertile (as there are a few off-beat combinations that can reproduce only infertile offspring, like ligers). So the term races is wrong here unless they could reproduce, given the lack of mixed descendancy makes that rather improbable. The monicker “human race” is also scientifically incorrect, but language does not work within these confines.
