Are they really planning a Guild Wars 3?
Where are these article you talk about? Have link?
People that are unhappy with Guild Wars 2 tend to say things like that. However ANrt has given no hints of abandoning this game. Indeed, they’re expecting it to continue to be popular.
I think the biggest lessons we learned were from all the things that came out of launching Guild Wars 2 and everything that came out afterwards," says game director Colin Johanson. "I think we’ve applied most of those to the way that we’ve built Heart of Thorns – everything from starting by focusing on how we build the expansion, not just thinking about it for today, but also eight or 10 years from now when it’s still a really popular game. So we make decisions that enable us to continue to support the game in the future as well
ANet may give it to you.
It’s all player chit chat… aka rumours.. often false.
Unless there is info brought out from the devs them self… ignore any Player chit chat

Didn’t you read the thread yesterday? They made gw1, 2 and 3 and all the expansions years ago when they had heaps of developers and now run a skeleton staff to just do the required maintenance.
Lol.
Not likely. The genre really haven’t advance. We are probably seeing the limit of mmorpg, unless some big change comes.
Also with the amount of money GW2 makes, they are more likely to keep going. When GW2 starts to slow down, they might think about it.
Guild Wars 3 is going to take place in Cantha and Guild Wars 4 is going to take place in Elona.
well i dont think so.
unless they change the genre, like maybe gw3 will be hack and slash ?

That’s what I said in another thread basically. I think it’ll have PSO2 like mechanics since the trend is towards simplification unfortunately. I like PSO2 and it’s a bit more complex than a typical hack and slash but hack and slash games are typically console games, which are a notch above cellphone games.
they stated that they will never (at least not planned) make guild wars 3 because they can just update the gw2 engine if they need new stuff.
Canthan whispers, eh?

Until you run into Lu Bu.
I see these threads every time a new WoW xpac releases, no, the game is not going to die or be abandoned (like they did with GW1…) because it is a major release & probably has many many years ahead of it.
Guild Wars 3 is going to take place in Cantha and Guild Wars 4 is going to take place in Elona.
Guild Wars 3 will have capes and Guild Wars 4 will have mounts
If I remember correctly they only made GW2 because they wanted to include things that were impossible with the GW1 engine (mainly dynamic events if I remember correctly), and apparently they made the GW2 engine with that in mind so it’s easier to make big changes.
So I wouldn’t rule out GW3 completely, if at some point they decide they want to do something new and different that can’t fit in GW2 and they think a sequel would make more sense than a new franchise. But I haven’t heard anything to suggest they’re planning it now, and it seems unlikely to happen any time in the foreseeable future.
I especially don’t think they would do it just to follow the same ‘pattern’ as GW1 releases did. That would be an extremely strange move IMO.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
A weird article, especially the part where he is saying that they used their experiences to create HoT – given the amount of critics about how it differs from the main game. One would almost believe he is talking about a completely different game in future. Not GW3 though…
From what i remember they said like a year or two ago. There will never be a Gw3, it will just be Gw2.1. Which is basicly just updating the game and bringing out more expansions.

Why not make a completely new IP and have a MOBA with some fighting game mechanics? There’d be dueling mode where it’s purely a sideview 1v1 fighting game with all the MOBA mechanics absent and winning a duel results in the opponent having a much longer respawn time. You only have one duel and in 5v5 you could theoretically duel six times per match (everyone challenges you at different times and you challenge someone else). Not all moves from the fighting mode would be available in the MOBA overhead but the MOBA mechanics would be simplified to accommodate some of the fighting game mechanics. There would be no EXP or gold, just straight up strategic and skill based PvP. Talent from Virtua Fighter can be poached to balance the fighting game portion (one of the best fighting game series in existence due to its balance).
Of course there will be a GW3. If GW2 continues to be successful and if developer ideas exceed the limitations of the current game engine.
That’s how every game sequel is born.
I want the entire world explorable first (including Cantha) before we move onto Guild Wars 3.
It makes more sense economically to sell expansions to a game with an established player base.
If they created a GW3, most of the GW3 customers would be GW2 players who would stop playing GW2, stop buying new GW2 expansions, stop spending real money on the GW2 TP, and put all their money towards GW3. That’s a lose/lose proposition for ANet as it is more expensive to roll out an entirely new game from scratch versus creating a new expansion to an existing game. They would end up spending more money in order to have fewer customers. Of course they might pull in new players with a new game or bring back old players that have left the game, but the same could be said for an expansion.
Unless there is a fundamental shift in gaming, such that games like GW2 are considered old and outdated by comparison, I don’t see a GW3 coming along.
If they make GW3, they’ll have to move most of their employees to GW3 teams. And have a few years of low profits until GW3 is out.
Dont’ make much logical sense, since GW2 is doing fairly well.

Why on earth would they have “few years of low profits” because they start developing GW3? For PvE they can just keep it on life support (SAB would keep us content for like half a year), in WvW they just have to let it die and in sPvP they only need to do constant rebalancing breaking the game every two months and a half a dozen PvP seasons a year and another dozen contest that they put ads about all over the game.
That said, I do doubt they will really consider GW3 until the income reach a critical low. Something pretty dramatical has to happen for GW2 to be abandoned by the community. Even if WvW is mercy killed by Anet, the PvE farmers will no doubt keep the gemstore running.

When they decided to make GW2, they have a small team of 4 on GW1. If they move all their staff to GW3. I’m not sure the player base will stick with GW2.
But I think the more crucially is even if they make GW3, it won’t necessary mean more money.
And it is usually a bad idea to start developing an mmorpg unless you are all in. Because technology and market keep evolving. If you decide to make an mmorpg, it best be out in a few years.
If they make GW3, I hope they’ll let us move characters from GW2 to GW3… because I’ve done a lot of work on my account.
TINFOIL HAT ON
Let’s assume that there will be 2 more expansions. Next expansion will be in development this year and released next year. Repeat for the second. 2018 at that point.
Development for GW3 would probably start alongside or before the final expansion. Let it develop for about 3 years (2017-2020), continue to support GW2’s final expansion until GW3’s release. 2019, GW3 is announced, alphas and betas happen. 2020, final betas in progress and release slated for mid year (preferably between April-August).
Just so the stars align, GW3 is released on the 28th in NA of whatever month it’s released in. GW1, released April 28th. GW2, released August 28th. Mike O’Brien has no hair left… anywhere. Colin Johanson’s smile no longer consist of his natural teeth, but are dentures. Guild Chat is renamed and GW3 will use DX11 while every other game has moved onto DX12, 13, or Windows ’95.

When I see these threads, I can’t help but recall the old conan obrien skit “in the year 2000.”
sounds about right, GW1 was 10 years, no reason why GW2 wont be the same. Aside from that what would GW3 give, gfx are already gorgeous and extra fidelity is not going to add to that, map size is limited to the 32 bit memory register and it will be a few years at least before the majority are 64 bit. GW2 has a lot of story and map to give and that gives more value for us that throwing away everything and investing hundreds of millions to start again with different pixels

It’ll give them time to step out of there “not invented here” mantra and evaluate 3rd party game engines and find the one that would be easier to extend to do what they want to do. After all the asset creators aren’t using home rolled tools. And the web group is using Coherent UI.

Anet will ditch GW2 and start working on GW3 this year.
I really wish they could revamp the engine a bit for DX12 somehow, but i imagine thats not to easy or cost effective :<
I hope they release a GW3 sometime in the future. I’ll dearly miss my account but without a hard reset there won’t be much to innovate.
