Are videogames art or just entertainment?
Now I want to ask you, what do you think? Videogames are art? And more, Guild Wars 2 is art or just entertainment?
What an incredibly insightful question: are videogames ‘art’?
My short answer: Yes, and no.
My long answer:
Several months ago, I purchased ThatGameCompany’s ‘Journey’ collection, so perhaps that’s a good place to start.
Journey, for those that haven’t experienced it, features no spoken or written dialogue of any kind, no ‘boss monsters’ and no combat at all; as you play through the game, the story plays out through imagery and musical cues, which creates a much a ore personal experience.
So, in short: are games ‘art’? They’re getting there.
Ebert still getting mileage off that plea to get noticed again?? Siskel was always right, Ebert always wrong. Fade into history, end of story.
If I’m not mistaken, it was approved that video games are art by the Supreme Court so they can be protected by the Constitution, though that’s just in the USA. Art is merely subjective, I could find a dog pile to be a swirling mosaic of life, beauty and simplicity as easily as someone finds Van Gogh’s Starry Night in a similar fashion.
Games like Bastion, Braid, Journey etc provoke far more reflection, introspection, thought and even emotion than many “modern art” pieces.
Tracy Emins “unmade bed”, or any bewildering number of “modern art” involving flat coloured bands or hopelessly random splatter on the other hand is considered “art” and yet provoke none of the above for most people (including me).
As one poster said video games may be “getting there” in terms of being art; but I’d also beg to differ that “art” itself is sliding backwards and lowering the bar to entry to the point games may be more art these days than art itself. xD

Absolutely it is art. It is a creative work with many themes, the same as any painting or song. Why do you think art and entertainment must be mutually exclusive? Is art not entertaining? Go ask any developer if they feel what they do is art, if they say no then they aren’t any good.
EDIT: Software development is art in the same way that writing is.
They’re an art, art is entertaining.
There is art in everything you see, feel, smell and hear. Art is biased since it reflects on personality and overall ones perspective on the world which one is surrounded in.
Games are a medium, like movies and theatre, where senses are stimulated thus achieving a sense of art and entertainment.
So, yes, games can be considered to be art if one wants to perceive it that way and while more than just an entertainment medium.
