You double click him?
Since you’re an engineer are you spamming ‘1’ instead of autoattacking?

I have this happen on all of my ranged characters. Basically only happens when I’m tab targeting and it targets something out of my range. Once I kill whatever I was actually trying to kill, if whatever I accidently targeted happens to come into range, I’ll just fire off a random shot.

I blame lackluster tab targeting more than anything.

Pretty sure “1” spamming is what’s happening. Personally I do the same thing and I aggro things I’d rather not have constantly. I understand it’s not effective, but I have never, in any game, been able to stop doing that. Probably dates back to DAoC, I would go through my rotations hitting each button repeatedly until it fired.

I have noticed it too. Sometimes if I’m running past something maybe its my finger lightly touching the mouse when I go to see it’s; name and I target it, then randomly my pistol shoots it. Im also an engineer.

Yes, I get this sometimes. It’s really annoying. It’s like my character has a life of his own.

On more than one occasion while I was not in any way targeting another mob (left/right mouse buttons held down heading towards an objective decidedly not near a mob) she just decides to start ripping off arrows at something well off to her left.

I’m cool with it, girl likes to kill stuff. I gotta be honest, if I were a hero capable of rattling off 60 well aimed arrow shots per minute I’d probably want to kill stuff too.

i get it on my engineer. i don’t play any other toons so can’t comment on them. however, i thought i must be getting hit by a turret or some cannon i missed. usually stepping in a direction 5-10 steps away makes it stop. no idea what causes it.

It’s the out-of-range as others have described. The game remembers your attack status even if you change targets, get out of combat, etc, and will attack the remembered target once it becomes valid. If you notice yourself targeting accidentally, hit esc a couple times and it clears the command. Auto-target may be a culprit as well, since it will queue the attack command on an out-of-range target if you hit a skill.

i thought it might be a mob i have hit and it is re-attacking, however, i have been alone after killing a few and still get random hits. i have rotated 360 degrees to make sure there is nothing i am missing (turret/cannon for example) and have noticed i am solo mea when it occurs.

not saying it isn’t some mob i slapped around and just didn’t kill, but i was more suspect of it being a mob under the world.

OK so I’m not crazy. Saw this last night on my Mesmer when Greatsword was equipped at least twice. didn’t think much about it, other than wodnered how the heck I started attacking when all I did was tab.

That’s actually a good thought. I’ve had it happen to mobs stuck in walls, now that I think about it.

Yeah, even if your target’s out of range the autoattack status indicating “arrows” slightly pulse, which means whenever I do get in range it’ll shoot. Holstering your weapon resets it though (key not bound by default).
