This is the first company who has made an MMO in the last 8 years who gets it. They understand the MMO community, they love MMOs themselves and are inspired to create the game they want to play. They communicate with the GW2 community, they understand the difference between whining and legitimate feedback. They understand what PvP is all about. I have not been more pleased with an MMO company.

I feel Blizzard had this at one point with WoW but has lost touch in recent years.

EA/Bioware did not understand the genre, community, or fine details of gameplay when it came to SWTOR. They emulated WoW (even the bad parts) because they did not have the inspiration to come up with their own ideas. They did not respect the community and made bad decision after bad decision expecting to have auto success due to the franchise. Eventually they failed with their lead designers “resigning” and the game going F2P.

Funcom repeatedly rushes what could have been decent games. All their MMOs are released too early with only starting content, and enormous amount of bugs. Their games always fail quickly.

Thank you ArenaNet for finally being the ones to get it right. This is the game I have been looking for since vanilla WoW. I can’t wait to see whats in store in the future.

I’m not sure why so much hostility is being thrown around at people who acknowledge that the game is good but bring up some of the glaring flaws that are quite frankly dampening a great many people’s enthusiasm for the game at the moment.

I had to log in just to reply here.
By removing meaning full character progression and roles they have shown that they do not understand what a rpg is or what drives a rpg player.
Even fps games have more rpg elements today.

This is also the reason gw2 only lasted two weeks for me.

Uh, no…that’s not what happened at all. Maybe for the other guy, but I’m not defending him nor claiming to speak for him. After all, making sweeping assumptions about other posters isn’t going to get anyone anywhere, nor is throwing down stock and vague phrases such as ‘Get. A. Grip’ when I’m quite easily prepared to engage in civil debate and discussion.

More fool me for trying to play the devil’s advocate, I guess.

I enjoy the game, and after playing it, can’t go back to WoW.

WoW just feels bleak and looks dull and dreary. Dumbed down beyond belief for the younger audience. In general Blizzard games have massively gone down hill. This game has real potential, and a great first expansion or big content patches could really build momentum for interest.

Ditto. Love it. I usually wait 6 months after a release to play because bugs are expected. Even the smoothest launch will have bugs. I was too excited for this one though to wait!
Yes, they got it right. It matters to them. It shows. The non-competing between players, the endless things to be discovered by exploring every nook and cranny, the amazing voice acting work put into it, and on, and on………..
I can handle the mild annoyance at things bugged or not quite right here and there, because I know it will only get better. It’s already great, so can’t wait for the future!

Thank you ArenaNet

I have searched the internet for years and tried many new games just hoping for one that would be ‘for me’, not leaving me bored before level 40 came. Not only is the game great but I have so much respect for ANet as a company. I have never seen anything at the level of interaction they have with the community. I recognize issues with the current state of the game as any objective player would, but I have never seen something valid brought up by the community that they have not immediately addressed which is so admirable. I am inspired by this game and what ANet brings to the table as a company. I think people are forgetting that no game is ever released with 100% of the content that it has after a few months or years. This game has barley been out for two months and players are already getting so impatient. The only thing that truly depresses me about this game is checking the forums excited to hear news about events and features, only to see twenty new threads about the bots (which ANet is already actively involved in fixing) or threats to leave the game over a bottle of spilled Elonian wine. I am starting to feel sorry for the devs who have to read this every day. I think anything that costs me $60 which gives me hundreds upon hundreds of hours of enjoyment is a great investment, after all, a 2 hour movie costs me $15. Call me a fanboy for life, happily at level 60 and going strong.

Well said. I will not give them a high five because they completely missed the topic. They watered down and degraded the RPG elements which are THE most important in… Well, in a RPG game. Fail.

They watered down stats based progression and gave us virtually unlimited freedom with builds so we can play in our style. About time someone redefined the mmo. No one cares about RPGs. People just wanna have fun. Stats based progression can be fun in single player games.

Im not sure i like them much anymore. Im annoyed that my Guardian gets nerfed and changed every week. Its really started to get me down. The game should have spent more time in beta before release! God knows what they will change next week!

That’s not true, a lot of people care about RPGs … but here’s the secret that some of those people are forgetting: RPGs aren’t about stat based progression, they’re about immersion in a character and a world and Tyria is a deep world that sucks you into its lore an locations very well. RPG isn’t a mechanic, its a feeling and a way of playing that a game can support but a setting has to embrace and the players have to make happen.

I do a lot of roleplaying in Tyria … in fact, the game has been more roleplay friendly than any other MMO I’ve every played. I love the game, and I don’t need to be able to fidget with my stats to make that happen. (I do wish they’ve give us some more clothing though ;P )

I’m sorry I stepped outta yer box, don’ worry, if
ya whine enough they’ll put me right back.

Really enjoying my time in Tyria.

Haven’t managed to log onto my Guardian yet to see how I get along with my buttons moving about, but I’m sure I will cope.

The depth and immersion into the world itself is what I really enjoy about the game.

As far as stats based progressions goes, it caps at 80 and I like that. It’s not like there aren’t any options for stats at 80, given there are x amounts of builds you can head into. (Went Power/Healing myself).

As for the statement about RPG’s being about stats, your aware RPG stands for role playing game? As in you play as a character, statistics are just a numerical display of what your character is good at, which you determine based on how you play and where you choose to allocate said stats.

Meaningful progression for me isn’t about how big my numbers are or how many achievements I have. It’s about doing things I haven’t done before, exploring, gathering sets, collecting things (I love dyes), genuinely playing my character for fun and not just trying to get better and better gear. I don’t need better gear, I like having a plateau.

I highly respect ANet for the work they’ve done on the game. They defiantly made the right move in the MMO genre to fix the glaring issues that yesteryear MMO’s had.
They really did their homework to build a game where the world feels like more than just a lobby you tool around in waiting for a group or PvP.

With Dynamic events driving players forward and the way they get broadcasted on the map spontaneously brings players together to work on the objective at hand, and many many other little features that gently socially condition players to work cooperatively together.

They however could have done better on their end with security and not having the forums up at launch when they had the entire beta period to get them up and running was a bit of a downer are area’s I think most would agree they could have done better on.

@Lorrides: The progression part can be debated, but not having that trinity abomination anymore is NOT the same as removing roles and the term roleplaying is certainly older than WoW. I cannot remember ever having a GM who let the monsters pound on the most unkillable PC for 20 combat rounds because he waved his hand at it while the dude behind threw bolts of lightning and the guy next to him made sure the shielded turtle had even the slightest scratches healed.

It makes me sad because so many people loved ArenaNet’s stated design philosophy carried over from Guild Wars into Guild Wars 2. Now they’ve gone back on that and added gameplay elements we were trying to escape.
