What are the arenanet points we get from doing dailies and other achievements used for? Or are they just a status symbol?

Do you mean Achivement Points? if so for now yes its status and a couple of titles only.

They are going to be used for something, but nobody knows what yet. It could be laurels or an entirely different reward system.

They will be converted to laurels…eventually.

There will be in the future rewards given based on achievement points. Which means that those of us that lost achievement points today will be getting less rewards unless they fix the mistake.
