Armor Durability (or Lack of)
I always thought it was a random piece, but it could well be that it’s actually weighted towards higher rarity armour. I would have to experiment to give you more information ^^,
Are you asking why a piece of armor breaks on death or why it’s always the same piece?
If the former: because that’s how the death penalty in GW2 works.
If the latter: No idea. I also remember a dev blog post that said it’s supposed to be random, so maybe that’s a bug.
Actually you don’t have to fix it immediately. The stat loss isn’t affecting you until *all 6 *main armor pieces are broken.

There are 7 pieces of armor. If you have them fully repaired, you won’t need to repair any until your 8th death because nothing actually breaks until then. If you need to worry about repairing armor frequently, you need to really examine what you are doing wrong.

I got the impression he seems to get his shoulder slot broken first, and want’s to know why it’s that lone piece that keeps breaking. As opposed to the direct mechanics of how armour degradation works.
I die a lot personally. But then I do know exactly why; I am magnetically attracted to cliffs & deep holes.
I lasted all of 15minutes going for the achievement without dying, I charged up to the Vista above the bear cave in the Norn starting area and promptly fell down the hole and died on the cavern floor.
Ironically however, I’m pretty handy at the jumping puzzles. Odd
Pants: obtain the survivor achievement through crafting ^.^
On topic: On one of my characters, the first piece of armor that breaks is the back. It is a rare item and the rest is all exotic, not counting the breathing mask. But it is the first to break every single time for her. (had that backwards heh)
On my mesmer, who is in all rare items, the first item to break every single time is the pants.
Maybe it is random per character?

Yes it’s always the Shoulders, 100% of the time. I’m a stickler about having it repaired immediately so I don’t even really know what might break next. To be completely honest though I just kind of assumed that when a piece breaks, the stats and bonuses from it are then not effecting you until repaired. So, at the very least, thank you all for opening my eyes to that fact. Heh, if this post ends up serving only one purpose, thank God I’ve now learned that. Who knows how long I would have gone on believing that a piece’s stats are gone as soon as that piece breaks.
Another facet of my question though is the fact that it always and invariably takes one and only one death and like clockwork – Shoulders are broken. One single death seems like a fairly weak measure of durability, especially for an exotic piece. I guess it just makes practical sense to me that the better the armor the more durable it should be. But no, it’s not 2 deaths nor 5, nor 105, it’s just one death and it breaks every time. Again though, I guess I just made an assumption based on what seems common sense to me that they should last more than just 1 death. We all know what they say about assuming though…
In everyone elses experience though, does at least 1 piece of your armor always break after just one death?
