Armor longevity
dont buy expensive gear unless your level 80.
go for blue stuff or karma items here and there. it gets the job done.
IF you’re talking about rares, they’ll last you a long time. Obviously there will always be a better piece than the last, until you hit exotics.
I generally go with masterwork (greens) items every 10 or so levels, starting at 25. Up to that point I just get blues every 5 levels, starting at level 10-11.

Just play and if you notice that maybe the mobs are getting tougher or you even find yourself dying when this normally shouldn’t be a problem – then check your gear to find out it’s 20-30 levels lower than your current level.
But there is no direct formula.
