Am I the only one that thinks it’s -absurd- that Ascended Earrings cost 45 Laurels and 50 Ectos each? They have lower stats than the rings, and even a single better stat item like the Ammy is only 35.

If anything they should cost 25 Laurels. What the blazes Anet? I understand you’re also introducing them with the Guild Missions system, but as that system really only caters to large guilds at the moment unless tweaked, this seems to be the only viable method for players in smaller guilds.

Am I off base here, or does anyone else agree?

I also feel that the ecto cost should be dropped to bring them more in line with the other accessories. I’m in a smaller guild that has no way to open up the guild missions for a while so I will not be getting these for a long time.

Bad Bad Bad I refuse to join a large guild to do this. The prices to get these are way to high drop them to 30 laurels with ZERO ectos……

Heck I’d be satisfied if they just added them to the daily chest you get from fractals. Perhaps level 10+. Or would it be to much to ask for some pristine love inside of fractals for those items make them cost 15 pristine relics. 30 days for two items would be fair…

This type of artificial gating is the norm in F2P mmos. it allows the developer to take longer between content additions while keeping the player base busy.

it has nothing to do with forcing guild size or “fair” acquisition rate. Its about getting people to use the gem shop(gold—> influence), minimizing the amount of free content being given away, and keeping people interested in buying an expansion.

Well yes why do something if there no reward (well sadly that how it seems most of the ppl on the forms think). They want to make guild part of the game ppl on the forms want guilds to be part of the game (look back a few weeks ppl going on and on about no reason in being in a guild). This is how you do it you wait a very long time or you get a guild AND still wait a very long time because it not too much faster then run guild events vs just waiting out for the Dailies.

Atm one guild event pers week is 2 points you need 12 for each earring 6 weeks. So what is 6 weeks base is 42 points 6 weeks is about 1 month + so that another 10 points. SO for by the time you get one earring you gotten 52 points so you could get an earring and then some from Laurels alone. Now that only with one guild events i am not even sure if the other work atm but there more then AoW the major complain about guild events. Do you guys know if you can unlock and do the other guild events on the other guild trees? Or is every one going off of bad info?

Except your chest piece costs more than your helm in dungeon tokens. They price according to stat, not because it’s an armor piece.

Also why Two handed weapons are more expensive than a single hander in dungeon tokens.

I figured that was the reasoning behind making them more expensive, but this is beyond absurd. Even at 30 Laurels a piece they’re still more expensive and time consuming than doing Guild Events, there is no need to make them ridiculously priced at 45 Laurels and 50 Ectos.

( Just using your information as another point, not disagreeing with you. )

Thats the way I see it. Sadly it’d be quicker for me to get the Laurels and ectos then the guild badges. I’d definitely get all the Laurels before my guild could unlock or complete the missions. The cool thing is with the chest update ectos are starting to drop in price at first its going to be slow but soon ppl are going to stop hording and the price will fall. Even with guild that can upgrades it and run them on day one its still a 6 week wait only one event is do able. There also talk about adding in Ascended items in wvw in the march update. So by the time you get one earring the next way to get something will be out. Things are being updated in this game all the time small things like this are just bumps in the rode and a frame work for the long run.

If it is true (and it’s not so clear-cut. It’s laughably easy in 100+ member guilds. One such guild did a tier 3 bounty on the second day already) then the only thing it means is that ascended accessories cost is too high in both approaches.

No matter the effort to get them another way the fact remains, that the laurel+ecto cost (and time to get) for single eaaring is ridiculous.
And the other cost is actually “join a big guild”.

45 laurels alone is redonculous compared to rings but an additional 50e is plain laughable. That’s ONE FREAKING MONTH of spamming boring dailies and over 16g. I miss the days when all you had to do is farm X place/dungeon to get your item instead of these stupid laurels (tokens in general). I have all other ascended gear on my main and will NOT be getting earrings that are so kitten overpriced. 30-35 laurels with ZERO ectos is what those should cost and not a single laurel more.

Fact: every Thief tells you to “l2p” when the subject is to nerf stealth.

I think it is ridiculous. If they are going to force us to do guild missions to keep up with the gear treadmill, at least give us options to let small guilds have 1 mission that doesn’t require tons of people. Or make it so the cost was more reasonable than close to 3 months of dailies.

So sick of ascended, really miss the days of just getting exotics.

Yes… getting them right now is about the same amount of time it would take to get 45 laurels because guilds need to collect merits to unlock the rest before we can get 12 commendations PER WEEK. Once that happens, 45 laurels will be overpriced, and the ectos are just to sink the item out of the game after their new chest update. I do believe they should be dropped down to 30 or something. Rings and Earrings should have about the same price, I already think its odd the necklace is cheaper than the ring…. and you can get the rings by other means.

All it is for is to help people pick the “best” method to getting everything.
Necklace – Laurels, cheap and only way

They didn’t say there would be no grind, but grind would be less boring (i.e. kill 10000 monsters at only this 10×10 square foot area and no where else, oh and you have to fight other people for loot as well all for a random chance to drop an item that you may or may not even be able to use)

btw, gear progression =/= grind.

Well it takes a lot of time to unlock all the events and you got to run events to unlock more events. We are about 10 days off from the ppl who bought the neck item to get there first earring. Its about 3 weeks to get the earrings from commendation if your guild rushes every thing and has the influence to do it. If not its more about 4 weeks that still pushing it i think so its still on part with getting earrings though Laurels.

Truly though these earrings are berry stronger then exotic they are not worth the work to get these but they are something to work for with these guild events but not worth getting though laurels if you do not have neck or rings.

50 ectos is far from unreasonable for an ascended piece. Laurels are essentially free and the amount is limited only by time.

And if they keep it up like this gating all the gear/content behind large guilds then im going to leave the game, and im sure im not alone.

I like many of you im sure prefer the community/freindship of a small guild, im in one with a few real life freinds and am not giving that up just to be another face in the crowd or a number not even a real person to a larger guild.

And its not like you can join 2 guilds anymore most if not all large guilds on my server now have a 100% represent policy because they can hold the gear/content over your head, so its either disband small guild and join large guild, stay in small guild and dont get ascended items/content, or quit the game. Unfortunatly for Anet i think many small guild members are going to pick the third option and just move onto games where they can have the sense of community of playing with close freinds in small guilds without being excluded from high tier content/items.

I would also like add that we have never said there would be no vertical progression. We do intent to focus on horizontal but we will have vertical progression moving forward with the focus on zero grind and a very low power curve.

They promised a no grind game after people got kitten off back in November. And yet the grind for ascended gear has only continued to grow worse, just as the “doomsayers” predicted back in November. Guess they weren’t as crazy as everyone thought.

Remember when our developers talked about “strengthening the core game”?
How’d that work out for us so far?
Now let’s try some ideas that will really work.

That the thing these earrings are not a true higher tier item and that about all you get as a reward for doing these events. If you MUST have them you will get them over time both if your in a small guild or a big guild. No one getting a free ride here nor are they making life easier for any one its just simply more content.

Small guilds are not dieing inactive guilds ARE dieing these are not the same thing. If your a big guild who dose nothing with there guild mates your guild will die just the same as a small guild who never dose any thing with there guild mates.

I often call all the people who don’t use the gem store free loaders, one argument I hear against this is that all the cheap kiddies are in fact somehow generating content and emergent gameplay… The above would make that closer to true.

Balancing a ranked/rewarded guild system for all sizes and types cannot be done, since GW2 is about all types of people they sacrificed balance on size. Social will mean getting out there with a hunded of more people – not JUST your girlfriend, brofriend and cousin (Diablo is meant for that).

That is a horrible statement. Basically Anet is saying, “play the game the way we want you to play and we don’t care what you like”.

They are telling us, if we don’t play the way Anet wants, we will be punished.

I have bad news for you Anet. “Encouraging” me to do things I don’t want to do won’t make me do them. It will only make me quit and go find a game that I can play and have fun doing so, not being forced into content I don’t want to do.

It’s so odd. Anet is not new to the genre or games. Yet they are acting like a newbie company that has no clue how to make their games fun. It’s just so strange to read some of the stuff they have to say about the current state of the game.

Analyzed, that is basically what the quote says to me.

Most people are in guilds and would really love to work toward rewards together, so why didn’t they just skip the laurel vendor, leaving it to all other variety of shinies, and make the guild content more accessible? They realize that both ways are painful and people are personally choosing the lesser of two, right?

That is a horrible statement. Basically Anet is saying, “play the game the way we want you to play and we don’t care what you like”.

They are telling us, if we don’t play the way Anet wants, we will be punished.

I have bad news for you Anet. “Encouraging” me to do things I don’t want to do won’t make me do them. It will only make me quit and go find a game that I can play and have fun doing so, not being forced into content I don’t want to do.

Between telling people how to use their product and keeping the developement roadmap of their product secret it is hard to understand why anyone would keep paying… (Sarcasm with a kicker).

It is people who go out of their way to play against the developer’s plan or spirit (and blame the manifesto often, why not) that make the game as intended less fun for the rest of us.

Though I hope there is a game for you out there somewhere (else).

I would also like add that we have never said there would be no vertical progression. We do intent to focus on horizontal but we will have vertical progression moving forward with the focus on zero grind and a very low power curve.

They promised a no grind game after people got kitten off back in November. And yet the grind for ascended gear has only continued to grow worse, just as the “doomsayers” predicted back in November. Guess they weren’t as crazy as everyone thought.

Doing a daily or weekly events is not a grind. Even fractal are set up to be a mostly non grind daily chest. See a grind is something you do over and over to mostly progress your hero to a higher level grinding gear is part of this but this is more of the view of what you do in one day. So in this game the only true grind is farming gold to BUY items that you want or to kill mobs to level up eveny thing else is just an intensive not to spend all day on the game and only log in once a day or week.

Its like the view of grinding from mmorpg has changes the sec GW2 came out where in WoW you had to spend weeks doing the same thing over and over in the same day was not a grind but doing something once a day is? I am sry but that is out right morally wrong to call GW2 a grind. Look at other games FF11 the one i mainly know you got to spend days to get 1 level and your killing the same mobs over and over items and gil where comply on a different level. Look at EQ1 the “first” high pop mmorpg from what i know you had to do a lot to get items and level and to even get to new content. If you got to go out side of mmorpg even the new fps games make you kill x number of ppl with a type of gun to unlock other guns that IS a grind.
Tell me what game had no grind in it?

They are obviously trying to kill small guilds and force all players into the larger 100+ member guilds. This is very obvious.

And if they keep it up like this gating all the gear/content behind large guilds then im going to leave the game, and im sure im not alone.

I like many of you im sure prefer the community/freindship of a small guild, im in one with a few real life freinds and am not giving that up just to be another face in the crowd or a number not even a real person to a larger guild.

And its not like you can join 2 guilds anymore most if not all large guilds on my server now have a 100% represent policy because they can hold the gear/content over your head, so its either disband small guild and join large guild, stay in small guild and dont get ascended items/content, or quit the game. Unfortunatly for Anet i think many small guild members are going to pick the third option and just move onto games where they can have the sense of community of playing with close freinds in small guilds without being excluded from high tier content/items.

I often call all the people who don’t use the gem store free loaders, one argument I hear against this is that all the cheap kiddies are in fact somehow generating content and emergent gameplay… The above would make that closer to true.

Balancing a ranked/rewarded guild system for all sizes and types cannot be done, since GW2 is about all types of people they sacrificed balance on size. Social will mean getting out there with a hunded of more people – not JUST your girlfriend, brofriend and cousin (Diablo is meant for that).

Few things wrong with this line of thinking, one is every member of my guild including myself has bought gems for bank/bag slot’s, 2 is according to that website that lists all guilds on the servers my server has only 8 guilds with more than 100 members and more than 200 with fewer than 25, placing the majority of the playerbase in smaller guilds not larger guilds. Third the game was marketed as being able to be played how you want, not being forced into a large guild to get access to all the content/items.

I agree that it’s impossible to remove all grind from a game, because by definition, grind is repetition. And you can’t avoid content repetition. That doesn’t change the fact that the devs promised a no-grind game, and yet are continuing to release content that makes the grind worse. That’s a complete 180 from what they said they were doing.

Sorry, but this sort of thing is completely indefensible, and it’s perfectly fair for people to call them out on this.

Remember when our developers talked about “strengthening the core game”?
How’d that work out for us so far?
Now let’s try some ideas that will really work.

Point one of both our posts doesn’t apply to you (apparently), don’t stress it.

Point two of yours – the majority of the player base scattering out like that may have occured, but it may not have been intent – perhaps they have a very intense focus on big guilds with in-dev content and figured you can have your cake (tiny guild) and eat it too (big guild) so resistance would be illogical…

Early posts in this thread counters your point three – you can play a different way and still get access, it is just inefficient. Choose.

Can you just clarify if you think ALL paths are a grind (in this case – earrings), or just the one that has you attempt to do it alone?

LoL “desperate” i think that you miss my point its “disgust” but i am trying to be nice about it but your making its soo hard to be so.

I am saying that your views on grind are such that any game that has ever existed has some type of grind. They ARE staying for the most part true to there words but your trying your best to make it seem like its a grind. Posting comments to you IS more of a grind then this game.

I have giving you points and reason if you chair to post if they are wrong or right. Would you call WoW a grind? Would you call FF11 a grind would you could COD a grind would you call EQ1 a grind would you call any rpg a grind would you call any thing in life that takes some level of skill (meaning you MUST do it over and over to get good at it) a grind?

The issue with both being in a large and small guild(having cake and eating it to as you put it) is most large guilds now require you to represent 100% of the time, meaning there is no point in even keeping the small guild. Thats not really a great option for the people who prefer the community/freindship of being in a smaller guild.

Personally i have no issue with any of my guild members(im the leader of my small guild) representing a large guild for when they are logged in playing with the large guild and then representing us when they play with us, the issue is this doesnt seem to be a two way street anymore with the large guilds requiring 100% rep.

And i would also like to mention i dont blame the large guilds for this, its not their fault but a flaw in the way Anet has set up the guild system. The way it is now you have a set number of slots, and can only rep one guild at a time. So If im the leader of a large guild and i see people logged in but not reping me i would view that as lost rep and could fill that spot with someone who would rep 100%. And now that the content/items are gated behind large guilds its not like it would be a issue filling slots.

Anet really should fix this so that your re kitten pread across all guilds you are part of evenly, or so that you have a primary guild which gets say 75% of your rep and the other guild gets %25.

Grind does not mean simple repitition, Grind specifically refers to content padding by leaving gaps within content that can only be reasonably approached by low-reward repeated behaviours.

In this regard there are actually only a handful of grinds in this game. The fact some may choose to repeat one “most efficient” activity (and therefore grind) is mostly a choice.

That’s not the correct definition.
Grinding as a term was born from a coffee grinder image, aka repeating the same action over and over to get the coffee seeds into powder.

GW2 has done away with grind gating, and implemented time gating instead, aka the ability to only get a piece of something every 24 hours.
Is it better, worse? You be the judge.

But.
The fundamental problem is that some kind of gating must exist in order for a MMO to work, to not create major gaps between players and make content last longer.
If there is no gating, players will naturally grind what they need in the least amount of time possible – therefore being left with nothing to do and sitting here all day crying there is no endgame / nothing to do.
If you had a MMO you would make hell sure that this would never happen; gamers without goals are gamers that leave for another game.

I strongly believe that time gating is good in regards of progression; most people will get things equally as fast.
Maybe better forms will be created one day, but this is not that day.
This day we have the MMO panorama filled with grind gating, and GW2 based on time gating.
Pick your poison and have fun – or perhaps, create a new evolutive MMO with better mechanics, if you can think of any.
