First of all I have to say that once you have full exotic gear (and even before) you are quite powerful in almost all zones lower than your actual character level. Mobs fall like flies already…

so my question to you:
Do we really need more power?

There is one other game I can think of (maybe you have more examples) which has a different system. New weapons don’t necessarily mean more power. Instead they mean: different playstyle, which may cater to you or not. Can you guess the game? TF2. New higher tier weapons do not only have advantages, sometimes they have disadvantages in certain areas too.

what if…

  • an Ascended Longbow would shoot 3 projectiles instead of 2, but each with less damage (20,20,20dmg instead of 30,30) – stats would be the same as exotics
  • an Ascended chestpiece would grant you 1000 more healthpoints but 10% of all dodges would eat +30% stamina.
  • Ascended boots would give you +1000 healthpoints when moving but -1000 healthpoints while standing still. – same stats as exotics

etc.

What do you think? Do you really want more power to a long-term item? So that players who spend much more time than you playing the game will have an advantage to you. An huge advantage… 12% per piece.

Only if they fix the lvl 80 gear to work in high levels areas. Many people say people farm champions in Orr, but the truth is that the champions are the ones farming the players.

Ahem. no. I hate ascended gear. Anything would be better.

Edit: So far, ascended gear has more stats, but you lose flexibility.

Anything I post is just the opinion of a very vocal minority of 1.

We don’t need more power. Players will want to farm the advantages that exist because it deals with competence issue. PvP mode where one side has advantage in stats just because they have played for longer time is poor design.

I’m sure a lot of people would also love ascended/legendary gear if they would only add new effects to skills instead of power creep, what do you think?

I know Legendary gear is 100% cosmetic + same stats as top tier items, so no advantage. The thing is… ascended is not.

No, we really don’t need more power creep. We don’t need stat progression in order to make the game feel interesting, like we’re ‘growing’ as a character. As I’ve stated before, all climbing stats does it make for foes with climbing stats. They hit harder (to counter our higher defense and hp) and have more hp (to counter our higher dmg output). This is monotonous, and boring. I wasn’t pleased with the announcement of ascended back in November, but I have accepted that it is coming. Hopefully though, it will be the end of the ladder.

Personally, I’m with Marcus, if ascended and legendary where simply ‘elite skins’ I’d be good with that. We need some ‘elite armors’ to work towards, and most of the dungeon skins (which I think might have been Anet’s idea for elite skins) just don’t cut it. Many of them are too easy to get. In GW1, elite skins weren’t really hard to ‘get to,’ but some of the materials needed to make them could be prohibitive (Vabbi armor anyone?). Since crafting is something else in this game, we can’t do elite armors quite the same way. However, simply making them challenging to get to might work. Something like you have to complete x chest chain, and overcome y test, etc etc in order to even spawn the merchant to buy it. Or you have to build some encampment or outpost and then go hunt down the merchant and persuade him to set up shop there (Command post build quests from Nightfall). Such things are interesting, fun, and depending on how its implemented, potentially very challenging.
