How true are the following statements for you on a scale of 0 to 5?

1) I felt like I had little to do once my main character hit level 80, I got full exotic gear and 100% world completion. By the time of the patch my enthusiasm for the game had already lost a lot of momentum and I was really looking forward to new content.

2) Obtaining ascended gear gives me something new to aim for and boosts/refreshes my enthusiasm for GW2.

3)The lack of a tier after exotic is something that always bothered me. I feel that equipping my toon with better and better gear is something I look forward to in a game and that element was missing from GW2.

4) I believe that future paid expansion packs should introduce new tiers of gear.

5) In my wishlist of things to come for GW2 three months after its release (new areas/foes/weapons/events/skills, fixing bugs, tweaking class balance, anything at all) the introduction of a tier slightly better than exotic ranked pretty high.

So you want new expansions to be only available to players with Ascended gear. And old content to be obsolete.

This would do thing to generate gem sale, because all new content would be geared towards rich players.

2) – 8 (it’s exciting, but not super exciting. This sort of thing I feel is standard for progression)
3) – 10
4) – 0 (no payed expansions, please.)
5) – 5 (I was more interested in class balance and the addition of more misc. items to collect and things to craft with them therefore, but an extra gear tier is ok I suppose)

I’m not one of those GW1 hipsters, by the way. I like my games with meaningful content.

Should I expand and explain why?

1 – I did hit Level 80, 100% map completion, and I was looking forward to new content. I did feel like I had little direction as I didn’t really want to do dungeons without my friends.

2 – It does give me something to aim for, much like in GW1 I had Obsidian Armor to aim for. I made no serious attempts at it then, I won’t do it here . . . but it remains in the back of my head that it’d be a nice long term goal. You know, when I am really bored.

3 – I didn’t give thought at all to a lack of tier between Exotic and Legendary because as far as I thought . . . there was instead “General Exotic”, “Named Exotic”, “Precursors”, and “Legendaries”. And all of them weren’t really on my radar except for one: “Crafted Exotic”. (I’d just finished 400 Leatherworking and 400 Huntsman)

4 – I believe future expansion packs would be the best place to add such, if they wanted to at all. Do I want them to? No, not especially.

5 – See 3.

Just a small clarification about 4) cause judging from this post I think maybe I wasn’t clear enough or perhaps my English failed me a bit.

By paid expansions I’m referring to massive expansions like factions or nightfall for GW1 introducing extensive new content like new classes/races and a brand new continent roughly the size of the original game. Sort of the WoW equivalent of MoP for example. I think such expansions are sure to be released and they’ll unlikely be free (makes sense they wouldn’t be). I’m not referring to added content like the lost shores.

2)5
3)2
4) Ascended should be the last tier.
5) I do not want anymore higher gear tiers. I do want new weps and skills etc.

Basically this 1 tier is just enough. More stuff to do and things to aim for that’s it.
Some people have more than 2 hours a week to enjoy this game so they get things done and get bored with stuff alot faster…, I am only on fractal lvl 11 while people are on difficulty 23 with 2 rings and backpiece ascended. I got no ascended items so far. I am not bothered one bit. So far it hasn’t stopped me and soon enough I will get my items, they are fairly easy to get as well. Tbh I’d have them but I prioritize my legendary hunt over ascended atm. I just keep playing my own game and not worry about others.
People moan for stupid reasons. ‘Anet lied’, ‘I have to keep up with other playerz!!’
Get over it and move on, this is how it is and they’re never going to change the ascended items stats or whatever lol. They can only NOT bring out any more gear tiers, which I hope they really don’t, it would get really silly. New zones/skills/events/races is what I hope for.
Now decide do you want to play the game with this new gear tier ? You don’t ? then get out and stop moaning. You wanna keep playing ? go play then…

2)0 I had just got my exotics on my 2nd toon and was looking forward to playing how I wanted -not forced into playing something I dont want to do for gear that is need to remain competitive in PVE/WVW

3)0 That was what legendary was for plus I had expected new content would have had new skins to chase after not stats.

1 – (2.5 )<I have several 80’s, and LOTS to do on all of them to keep me busy for a long time, but if I had only 1 character I would’ve had almost everything done by now. New content is always welcomed, only gave it a 2.5 because I did not need it due to being “bored”

2 – (4 ?)<This is a “what if” type score, I love the fact they are adding new items, finding different skins/stat setups can be fun. “IF” at launch with the rescent patch created pathways and content for all playstyles to obtain new ascended then hands down a 4.

*BUT being the way ANet handled it by creating gated content for only one playstyle in one place and this is a sign of things to come then I have to give it a big fat (((0! )))

3 – (0) < Never bothered me, cool looking skins is more than enough to keep me going, also as primarily a Wv3 player gear/stat advantages are not cool, I like knowing I beat my opponents straight up not because I had a higher tier of gear than them.

4 -(5 !)for new content its always welcomed and appreciated/ (1)if it involves higher tiers of gear. Done the gear treadmill for far to long in past games GW2 was supposed to break away from that mold, would be done playing this game if that happened.

5 – (5 !) for most of that / (1 )on a new tier only due to the fact they created a gated content system for only one playstyle, If content and pathways were created for all playstyles in obtaining that gear than I could deal with a small grind for my +2 of each stat.

1) 1 – I have several level 80 characters, do not have 100% world completion, was looking forward to new content, had lot of things to do and my enthusiasm wasn’t diminishing,

2) 1 – Obtaining new gear does give me something new to aim for – however, it diminished my enthusiasm instead of increasing it

3) 0 – The fact that top tier gear was easily achievable was one of the best points of this game. I would have been completely okay with no new tier above rares, actually. Constantly needing to update my eq to a new, better one is something i wanted to avoid in GW2

4) 0 – If i could give it a negative value, i would. Introducing better gear in paid expansions is exactly the worst possible approach you can do – those expansions stop being optional and become necessary.

5) 0 – the introduction of new tier of gear was never in any position on my wishlist. Not introducing a new tier of eq would have been likely close to the top.

Ehh. I’m going to assume you don’t know this, otherwise you’re just antagonizing. “Toon” is a term more popularly used than “Avatar” or “Character” and simply means the same thing – Its not a Toon Town term, and circulates as the primary slang in most MMO’s out there (and thus the MMO community as a whole).

I didn’t like it either, at first, but it grows on you, I guess. Refuting the lingo now is not going to get anyone anywhere, I imagine.

Honestly, I was looking forward in getting all my exotics and Skin Hunting. I wanted to get the best cosmatic style of armor and future items like the Legendary weapons for new skill animations and such. I was also looking forward to using transmutation stones to transmute them.

Getting easy max stat and having easy access to hard/challenging contents with lots of these rewarding horizontal prizes is what I was looking forward too.

It’s why I wanted to play GW2.

This vertical progression needs to end in my opinion.

All questions are similar, thus all shall receive the same rating=0

I do not mean to troll-just that new gears tiers were highly unnecessary for this particular’s player gaming experience. The game was doing fine as-is, and not everybody had 5 characters fully decked with exotic accessories, armor, and weapons (I even doubt that the people that didn’t have “anything to do” really didn’t have anything to do, seeing as I always had something to do in game-granted, I only have 700+ hours invested in my characters, and mostly on my Guardian.)

It is very selfish to imply that because you have “nothing to do” everybody else must feel the same way. If it was me, and I had REALLY nothing to do, I would just play something else, rather than demanding that a game that wasn’t designed for vertical progression was shaped to my willful demands. So it’s not wrong to like that sort of “progression”, but I feel it’s wrong/rude to demand that everybody sees things their way (in any case, the company should not have listened to that kind of player’s demands in the first place, especially considering their initial goals-no offense to ANet.)

It’s TOTALLY OK to like and love a MMORPG without vertical progression, even if it’s not the norm. Let people like what they like, as we do not need to follow each other like sheep for its own sake. And again, I totally respect your right to love vertical progression, but understand that there ARE people who utterly dislike that sort of thing, even if you think it’s all about being a supposed “majority” (which is sheer conjecture.)

After getting full exotic was planning to focus on changing my build and weapon set. And as far as what to do, I had plenty from WvW, guild nights, redoing my favorite dynamic events and leveling my alts.

2) 0
My enthusiasm for the game never diminished. I truly was having fun and just taking my time experiencing the wonderful content Arenanet created. Did you ever find all of the secret hidden places and quests/events they put in the game? If no, neither did I. So I bought the GW2 strategy guide. I planned to do some of the things I missed on my first trip to Lvl 80.

3)0
Never bothered me because Arenanet said that they intentionally built their game that way. I read the marketing materials and interviews. I knew why they did it. And I was happy with having a gear stat cap.

4) 0

5) New traits, new skills, new dynamic/group events throughout all the zones, new gear based on looks differences only, fixing of the bugs blocking access to DEs and other content, new types of SPVP, fixing known issues in WvW, adding more tools for guilds, introduction of Guild vs Guild battles. I have a long list and none of it has anything to do with raids or new gear with better stats.

Can you feel it? HOT HOT HOT

How true are the following statements for you on a scale of 0 to 5?

1-, 0, 0, 0, 0-

1) 1-. I had plenty left to do, the main issue is that leveling alts just means visiting the same zones again, and that the long term goals were too grindy and RNG based.

2) 0. The entire concept of the dungeon and the gap bridging to legendary would’ve been great… the added agony resistance, fine… until they decided to add stats. Which breaks a major promise of the game in a wowification move that serves on purpose, other than selling out to try to get more sales to mainstream MMO players.
Had the stats been equal to exotic, this’d score a 4 or higher (depending on whether these can be upgraded eventually to legendary without grinding just FotM).

3) 0. It’s false, because there already was. Legendary. Just no more stats upgrades, as the game’s been saying long before we could ever buy it.

4) 0. I’d hope for a system alike GW1 where an expansion gives tonnes of new content to play through, and the only possible ‘powerup’ would be new skills and alike (horizontal progression). Things that give you new options, but that aren’t actually stronger.

5) 0-. Lower if I could, it was ranked among the “absolutely do not” list.

That being said I wont invest my money in the game I dont believe in paying to keep up if the vertical players can support the game Gratz you just added a new game to the collection of hundreds of options out there but if you cant so sorry Anet you gambled and lost.

1) 0 (plenty to do, never felt bored once)
2) 0 (with these insane materials required at the MF, I won’t ever bother with crafting Ascended stuff, and given that none of the dropped rings so far appears to match exotic “Cleric’s” gear, there is absolutely no incentive for me to get them, either)
3) 0 (the very opposite, I was extremely happy that with exotic gear, I could complete a character in stats, aim for armor and styles I like, get gear for alternative speccs, start a second character etc.)
4) 0 (alongside with a raised level cap, even higher tiers of gear are the things that would really have me questioning whether I should not just instead quit the game instead of following it through with expansions)
5) 0 (the introduction of better gear was completely unfathomable to me, having read all the blog posts, manifesto etc., and the announcement of ascended gear was quite a shock to me)

0 for all of them.

This game was not supposed to have us chasing the newer better gear carrot over and over again. Now it does and it sucks.

After getting full exotic was planning to focus on changing my build and weapon set. And as far as what to do, I had plenty from WvW, guild nights, redoing my favorite dynamic events and leveling my alts.
2) NEGATIVE 10
The introduction of FRACTALS and the related gating, and making it the ONLY source of the best gear in the game has encouraged and resulted in a large portion of the playerbase standing around lion’s arch for hours on end acting like insufferable kittens. “LFM FotM, must be level XX, link exotics or be kicked, be 80 or be kicked” While the rest of tyria is swallowed alive by invading dynamic events which go unopposed, and the dungeons that DO require skill instead of simply agony resist go unplayed.

Yep add my vote for the goose egg crowd (0’s down the board).

I got this game after seeing the manifesto and truly hoping for them to stick by it.

Was I bored at level 80 – not in the least, but even if I had grown so in time, I could have put down the game, done something else and come back. Knowing I would not have to climb back on the treadmill made all the difference. Ascended was a bad mistake, BUT if they state publicly that there will be no more tiers added the I will give them the benefit of the doubt. But they will have to add other ways to acquire it (karma/crafting).

If they had only fixed a few bugs and added 30 or so DE’s in the last patch I would have been ecstatic but a new gated dungeon and an event I couldn’t even play BAH HUMBUG!

0 across the board.

Vertical progression isn’t necessarily a problem, until it becomes the central (or sole) focus behind “end game” (I loathe that term) play. Then it creates all sorts of issues.

I’m waiting to see what happens. If future content isn’t balanced around this new tier, and/or if multiple paths are introduced to obtain it, my game won’t really be impacted at all.

2) 1 – The problem is that the Ascended gear is inadvertently a new tier with increased stats i.e. vertical progression. While it’s a “new” addition to GW2, it’s not something that nearly every MMO has; its addition represents a possible shift in business model and target market.

3) 0 – Numbers really aren’t that beautiful to me. I’d much rather have gear with aesthetic upgrades, rather than plain-looking gear with increased stats.

4) 0 – This game doesn’t need expansion packs. If Anet wants money, the Gem Store just needs some serious work and expansion.

5) 0, or negative infinity. I’d much rather have any of the following over vertical progression:
(i) BUG FIXES
(ii) profession balance
(iii) new PVP modes
(iv) housing system
(v) Guild expansions / Guild Halls
(vi) new areas
(vii) new foes (i.e. interesting ones that don’t just have enormous HP bars)
(viii) new areas
(iv) new dungeons
(x) new weapons types
(xi) new skills
(xii) new sets
(xiii) Gem Store expansion
(xiv) new skins
(xv) a new tier of weapons that does NOT increase stats
(xvi) new stories
(xvii) new lore
(xviii) new missions/events

Vertical progression doesn’t deserve a spot on this list, but I suppose it would make a good coaster for my drink!

Eh most games have a vertical progression, heck even halo and COD. People like to see power rise as they invest time into it.

IF you want horizontal progression, go to facebook or something …

Except that this game had been advertised and marketed for years as not having vertical progression.

See, this is the gist of the problem with the pro gear grind crowd. You just can’t seem to get it through your heads that the problem that most of us have with the gear grind is that most of us dislike that treadmill mechanic with a passion. We realize that its just a lazy design concept implemented simply to keep players on a treadmill chasing the almighty +1. Had they been honest with us from the beginning and simply gave us the slightest clue that this would turn into a gear grind hamster treadmill game, we would have stayed far, far away from it and let the gear grind hamsters have at it. Instead they strung us along, and a short two months after releasing the game did a bait & switch and turned the game into exactly what many long time loyal GW fans hate about MMORPGs, and they did so without warning and only AFTER TAKING OUR MONEY!

Despicable is the only way to describe it!

So let me get this straight, you want there to be no new armor at all added to the game at lvl 80, you want no new content added at level 80 unless its equal to old content but why do it then to begin with? You want people sitting around doing absolutely nothing at all at level 80 when map completion is done? What the heck do you expect people to do? You do know that breaking down walls or getting zerged in WvW gets boring after a while right? What do you expect people to do? You want same mind numbing dungeons but without any upgrades so you can feel special and not have to work for anything? Why even have a level up system? Some of you people just baffle the hell out of me.

Oh wait wait, it’s okay to add armor as long as it is exactly the same stat wise as the crap there is now as long as it isn’t stronger right? You don’t want to put any effort into anything right? I mean god forbid having to put some effort into a game to get something nice. Still enlighten me, what the heck do you expect to happen? There HAS TO BE SOME TYPE OF PROGRESSION or the game will die, you have to give players something to do at max level or they’ll just leave, and screw that power creep crap kitten

You don’t get it, do you?

There are many more ways to implement a sense of progression other than introducing a gear grind treadmill. The list is endless and only limited by the creative imagination of the developers. But to name a few … it could be any of a number of cosmetic options (armor appearances, city clothing, dyes, unique armor acquisition such as a variety of hats, masks, etc). They could reward us with extra skills and special effects. They could also give us titles, animations, the introduction of additional specific content such as more complicated vistas, crafting. They could enrich the other areas with content for higher level players to engage in … the list is endless.

Surely, you will agree that a design concept that revolves around simply rewarding gear with +1 that can only pass as progression because it is then pitted against mobs with +1 hp bars, is an antiquated mechanic that can only appeal to a simple mindset?

The longer gear grind supporters continue to support this archaic and mind numbing design concept the longer it will be before game developers are challenged into innovating and releasing well thought out engaging content that will revolutionize the industry and ensure its survival well into the future.

^ As I said..pretty much rewards that really are worthless and doesn’t increase your power whatsoever. Here’s an example how I see it:

Brian “Hey man! Look at my new mask, what do you think?”
Jason “Not bad, what do does it do? and how long did it take to get it?”
Brian “..Well It took me a few days and it looks awesome!”
Jason “Right..but what type of benefit does it give you? Does it increase the power of your character in any way at all?”
Brian “Well it doesn’t do anything for me at all, it’s just for cosmetic purposes, but it does look good..”
Jason “So let me get this straight, you spent a few days working on getting an item that does absolutely nothing for you at all besides making you look different?”
Brian “Yeah..I guess I did.”

See the problem? Maybe you like working for useless items but I sure don’t.

I was indeed kinda bored and quit playing for a while. Not because of a lack of content/gear, but because the content felt kinda shallow and repetitive. I just lost interest.

2) 1
I’ll admit that I’m kinda looking forward to getting Ascended rings. But the real reason I’m back is that i like FotM more than the old dungeon system.

3) 0
Never cared about new gear tiers.

4) 0
New tiers = Hell no. I want vertical progression.

It seems you just seem to have a problem thinking outside of the box. The possibilities are not limited to the options I posted. Those were posted on the whim and only as quick alternatives. The point is that there are many other ways to implement progression other than the archaic, mindless, mind numbing treadmill design that simply rewards you with a +1 that only passes as progression because it is then pitted against a mob with +1 hp. To repeat, at this point I don’t care what they implement so long as its far removed from this stale “WOW clone” design. Its frankly insulting to still be sold this design concept nearly a decade after WOW introduced it into the industry. We are humans not hamsters. Can’t we innovate and move on already!
