Ascended rings from merchant: 25 laurels and 250 badges (in WVW)
Ascended accessories from merchant: 40 laurels and 50 ectos

Anyone know why the hell there is such a discrepancy here when rings give you HIGHER stats?

Because (as they admitted at that time), they didn’t want players to get them using that option.
It’s only there so they can say “You have a choice. Yes, one option is intentionally bad, but you do have it”.
Kind of like they did it with fractal ascended armor/weapons vendor costs lately.

Actions, not words.

Actually, my major task lately has been getting ascended rings/accessories/backpiece/pendants/aquabreathers lately on all 15 of my characters (yes, it will take awhile). Part of that was breaking down the total UM cost in all 3 S3 zones. Depending on the drop range for salvaging/eating UM it looks like bitterfrost is the most expensive, even though the item (berries) is more common.

Do you mind sharing the numbers (for curiosity and my laziness’ sake)? I only have 9 characters but an eventual goal is ascendeds for all, and I’m not sure I follow what you said here.

These days, the best source for any ascended trinket is farming the LWS 3 maps, especially since they are the only ones in normal PvE (i.e., outside of Raids) that allow you to choose the new stat combinations.

Before that, it was like this:
Rings —> Fractals (NPC)
Amulets —> Laurel Merchant
Accessories —> Guild Commendations

Assuming what you get from eating/salvaging the zone item is the average of the minimum and maximum here is the UM cost adding what you need to pay in UM and items:

Bloodstone Fen (rubies)
Backpack 12500
Pendant 7687.5
Ring 5750

Ember Bay (wood)
Backpack 12500
Accessory 9625

Bitterfrost Frontier (berries)
Backpack 13800
Ring 6400
Accessory 10600
Underwater 17000

The winterberry ascended pieces are HoT stats as well, I have not done the LWS3 farms for ascended pieces, but the winterberry route is very simple and quick. Each run nets me roughly 50 berries, and on 14 characters I have more than enough for a backpiece or ring and accessory per day. Each run takes me about 10 minutes, less depending on which profession is doing the run.

There may be more efficient ways but this one is still very rewarding for very little effort.

Isn’t it better that the thing that gives you better stuff cheaper?

Consider that usually the hardest thing to get are the backpiece and the breather but it also matters the least whereas weapons are generally the easiest to get but make the biggest difference.

This is for the most part intentional and allows people to do fine without the fancy stuff right now.

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards,
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

I average 2 characters per day doing the dailies in both ember bay and bitterfrost frontier (the other gets the zone items and about as much time there as the zone’s daily). Typically that means 100-150 berries/day and a few thousand UM (I salvage most of the petrified wood).

I worked out at the start that it actually made sense to buy the unbreakable tools for that many characters compared to buying them from the merchant. Unfortunately, then I found out about UM tools so now use those anyway.
