Ascended stuff not really a power creep?
Not really a definition of power creep really, the weapons are miniscule in dps increase.
Power creep comes when you’ve gone so far in the game all the older content is worthless to you now. Its one of the reason why the open world is so deserted and why new players wonder why they can’t play with anyone during leveling.
A good example of recovering from power creeping is heroic difficulty dungeons, it improved play while bringing back the old content.
well one player cant be everywhere at once. Zones are going to be deserted, there is no escaping that fact and there is nothing Anet can do to spread out the community. Queensdale is always populated though and that is a starter area.
Heroic difficulty? whats that about? can newcomers trying to level by playing it? If not then how is heroic difficulty useful to newcomers?
Its an example, not a mean for new players. Its to give players who have done everything and who really, have nothing left to do. The only version of it is high level fractals, but they are very unrewarding in terms of loot.
I can notice a difference in dps when dps increases by 5-15%.
Whether its needed or not is really irrelevant to the question in the title.
Its a slight increase in stats for BiS gear in the game, thus rendering Exotic as 2nd best (I am not saying obsolete or anything of the sort, only that its 2nd best now).
So…. A slight power-creep, yes.
if the extra damage from ascended is negligible, why is it there? Just make it same as exotic and everyone is happy?

most people who are at high level fractals know that they aren’t that hard. basically a guardian is required for reflect and you are basically suicide running to complete certain checkpoints.
The overwhelming numbers of spawns and the amount of health they have are so high it is better to just bunker up.
Then again you are talking about increasing your overall power which GW2 isn’t really about. Its more about looking cool and enjoying the content that is there.
+10% damage is not insignificant. That’s what ascended weapons give.
Content will have to be made harder to compensate (for example, bosses may be given 10% more health) which means those who don’t have ascended gear will be at a disadvantage.
Definitely a power creep. And totally awful for WvW.
If increasing the gear cap is providing more players and, more importantly, more RMT, I ‘d find it unlikely that they’d stop increasing that cap. That’s my worry.

Do you think you’d be able to provide that thread you were in? The numbers in there were scary.

Sure, I think you’re referring to this post.

I also wrote this to get a feeling for it without being math heavy based on 5% increase:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Holy-Grind-Wars-2/page/24#post2887333
The damage output is still only 5% increase (minimum), but should give you a better feel how much it is.
Assuming each attack takes 0.5 sec (a guardian autoattacking on a greatsword is 0.5s).
This is 2 attacks per second. For the PvE, any vet/champ/boss fight (ie. fights that actually matter):
10 seconds autoattacking (20 hits) = 1 extra attack (20 hits * 0.05)
60 seconds autoattacking (120 hits) = 6 extra attacks
300 seconds (5 minutes) autoattacking (600 hits) = 30 extra attacks
600 seconds (10 minutes) autoattacking (1200 hits) = 60 extra attacks
Multiply by 2 or 3 to get 10% or 15% increase version.
Power creep it is, or as the devs like to call it: Shallow power curve.
What in earlier days was an unintended, unfortunate side effect of imperfect balancing is now a feature and a psychological trick to keep players in the game.
Whether or not you need the gear for general play isn’t critical to the definition of power creep, or the definition of a treadmill for that matter. What counts is the criteria of exploiting human nature to not feel inferior to their peers. Carrot + Stick = Content
It’s a power creep, just not a massive one.

Aha, thank you sir.
