Aurene the first mount?

It will be short: just you. From at least a story perspective, it would be inadvisable to do so.

Gleam its the first born of Glint, wich means its arround 300yo older than the actual cub…
Still… if player cant control a airship due lack of game mechanics how to u expect to ride a dragon??
Ur expecting to much from this game…

They said the same about capes 4 years ago, since there was to much clipping or colision detec required they were scrapped :P
@that is why does not make sense to make aurene a mount and bring back Gleam.
Still i only believe in that when ic it in game.
Mounts still are a horrible idea for this game, so please not.

yeah true.. to make them worth they add at least to remove waypoints, still the areas are way to mob crowed to spam aoe gameplay, so it would be a OP combat mount to carry the pve skirtz, and map is to small to justify the use of mounts..
Still…. making WvW flying airship controlled by guilds…. where we could atack floating islands and conquer stuff from other players -.- …. would be a nice adition but would end not fitting on the game as well…
They probably just said that to ease the mount lovers, they migh have discarded that already since it conflits alot with the game.
If they ever did add mounts to GW2 I’d definitely want Aurene to be one of them. Riding a dragon would be amazing.
But it seems pretty unlikely it’s going to happen at this point.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
Ohh, yes. I just can’t wait until Aurene grows up to be big enough for my characters to ride on her back. To take a nice, comfy seat atop those jagged, crystalline spikes on her back, which will have most likely grown more pronounced by then. To unleash that blood-curdling scream of agony the first time she drops off of a ledge and hits the ground in a rough landing.
I’ll be so thrilled, I won’t be able to /sit for weeks!

how would aurene be the first mount? there’s only 1 of her and thousands of us. can you imagine all of us mounting a well known story character at the same time? weiiird.
This is becoming a tradition

I would not be comfortable with that.
*suppresses a shudder *
yeahhhhnooooooo
I’d hate to see mounts in this game.
But I think it’d be OK to ride Aurene in some big story related fight once.
Meh, mounts are a double-edged sword. The open world is already mostly without danger to the character, as a result of the HoT power creep.
Even the HoT mobs and areas are largely toothless by now, much an improvement as they were. The problem is that the world loses atmosphere and sense of exploration if the mobs might as well not be there, it feels “lifeless”.
If we get mounts which are faster than we are right now ,that’d get worse.
OTOH, there is a good way to implement this:
- Mounts at 35% speedboost (basically what Swiftness is right now).
- Don’t stack.
- Swiftness access more or less removed from the game.
- Swiftness takes the place of current superspeed, stays at 35% but isn’t a boon. Access is very rare and very limited, powerful because it can be used during combat. Otherwise mounts are the way to get runspeed out of combat.
- Mounting up takes 1 second and cannot be done in combat. Means you cannot trivially run away from groups of mobs.
flying carpet, broom.
Aurene by default will not be the first mount.

ArenaNet’s problem is that they try too hard, or at least commonly uses complex cases as the excuse. In the case of capes, that would be capes with physics. Flat capes with minimal animation wouldn’t be a problem and would certainly clip less than backpacks, but what you’d end up with is basically the Grasping Dead armor set (female), but continued upwards.
ArenaNet could introduce mounts in a very cheap way, by not having actual mounts, but by basically using tonics. You are the mount.

I was imagining it being something that’s only available in a story instance.
She is a dragon afterall. Even when she’s young and looks up to the player character she’s not going to follow us around while we’re in town just in case we want to ride her. It’d have to be a special situation.
(And for anything more than that I will continue hoping for a Pern game which isn’t terrible.)

They’d have to use some size altering magic to explain it. Otherwise, you’d need her to be the right size for both the smallest of asura, and the largest of norn/charr.
That just isn’t going to happen.

Reported and merge requested, just because these redundant mount requests just keep on coming.
I wish Aurene didn’t exist. That mission where you have to train her up is very reminiscent of ANet’s earlier attempts at “interesting” new takes on quests – where you get transformed into a dog/toad/flowerpuff with useless skills. For once, I’d like an escort/companion quest where my ward isn’t a useless sack of kitten. Or a blue baby dragon. I suppose she is more interesting than Taimi at least.
People who think this game will have mounts need to double-check their IQ…
Mounts are a bad idea for this game… Unless its done differently to other MMOs. It would need to be a situational function similar to how they added gliders. For example people like to cite the junundu from the papaya leak. Well the junundu wurms were more of a combat vehicle only usable in the sulfur sands of the Desolation. You could only ride them in that area, and they had specially balanced combat skills with specially balanced packs of mobs tailored just for that part of the campaign.
Soooo… people who think the junundu wurm leak is somehow proof of mounts, you might want to adjust your expectations. It’s more likely we get another version of the glider mastery designed for the new expansion, not a traditional mount that you pop anywhere to run faster.
Hahaha it was fun to read your comment guys (even though some insults made their way to this feed XD). Indeed, with your arguments it would unlikely, even inappropriate, to add mounts to this game.
Thanks for the answers!
Aurene, the child of the great crystal dragon Glint.

I’d hate to seem them outside a lore-respectable setting.
bad mounts: in base game
good mounts: in a map where it logically makes sense the asura wouldn’t have planted waypoints, like the Sulphorous Wastes, where you’d the wurms to travel around.
The game will be around for a long time so I suspect that eventually mounts will happen in some form or other. Taimi rides in a golem, we’ve already seen mounted mobs and, as mentioned above, we already have travel toys like the carpet and broomstick. Mounts don’t have to be animals…
Personally I can’t really see any need for adding mounts, or any real gain. I doubt they’d be much quicker than running with swiftness, plus we have gliding which I think is a lot more fun, and quick with lean and advanced gliding masteries.
I’m not really sure mounts would look right either, especially due to having to fit and look right with all different races. You could say have different mounts for each race, but from a development & Gemstore point of view I’m sure if Anet did mounts they would want universal ones that could be used by all.
The worst thing though is imagine how much more cluttered areas of the game would be during world bosses or metas. On top of that there are the performance hits to consider, minis are already hidden after a certain point to help. But if 150 people have mounts, that’s a lot more meshes to render, and a hell of a lot more draw calls.

I used to work on the game LOTRO and that is exactly how we did mounts- you were really putting on ‘horse pants’ and running faster.

That is amazing. Now every time I see a screenshot of LOTRO with all those cool mounts I’m going to think of them as ‘horse pants’.

Better than pants horses I guess.

Never forget that a great deal of wow magic is implemented by having an invisible bunny rabbit run around casting a spell. Kittens were named as the GW2 version of the same, or chickens.
Half the reason various changes turn out buggy in updates is because so many things are done by way of “horse pants” or some equivalent of sticking it together with duct tape and crazy glue on top of whatever features the engine has in place.

Why? We already have a riding broom and a flying carpet.
Imagens a norn on Aurene… eh…. nvm. She is not even half the size of them. Poor dragon would be flat out and dead..

It’s not so much the existence of mounts as such, but rather, the speed boost that comes with them — and in the case of flying mounts, the painful changes to mobility and content that derive from it. At least to my taste.

Right, that’s what I was thinking about your post.
I think it would be more epic if it were the other way round. The player being Aurene’s mount. Carrying her big reptile kitten around and then launch her at the mob, like an angry, scaly rocket.
Also Taimi needs a mount. Taimi in front, Aurene at the back. Just the dialogue options give me the chills… ‘stand down, or I will hit you with my magical dragon. Or worse, this chatty asura teenager who never shuts up.’
