It seems that Australia gets no “love” from ArenaNet, especially in the 10 year anniversary competition, we are not even able to enter. I’d just like to know why.

I agree. I’m disappointed when there’s something announced – like that testing thread that Gaile put up a little while back – and then it’s “Oh btw it’s only locals so you’re screwed if you’re in another country suckas”

I wanted to enter a competition pre-gw2, but because I wasn’t EU or NA I was unable to. It’s become very tiresome and I don’t even bother to hope for something coming to us anymore. The only thing I can aim for now is getting into the beta.

Many people think this, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s correct. As far as I’ve seen there is no way to see what percentage of players is from where. I run into more Australians and NZ players than I do Europeans, yet EU are included in a lot of competitions (and no, I’m not talking about before the megaservers were introduced, so this is players across all servers that I run into. I’m aware SoS is the ‘unofficial Australian server’).

If gw2 itself was in EB games (and it was), then I see no reason why HoT wouldn’t be released there either.

I’m moving to Australia from Europe this year, could you tell me what it’s like to play from there on EU servers? What’s the ping? Which ISP do you use? Is it possible to pvp at all?

Most of us play on NA servers for the slightly better ping which is ~200 during world exploration – if you’re concerned it might just be my connection being an outlier.

Also, brace yourself for comparatively lower bandwidth speeds. It’s 1Mb/sec if you’re on a decent plan, which is also variable depending on location. Personally, I get ~400kb/s tops.

Edit: TPG is your best bet as an ISP, honestly. Their plans are often the cost-effective in terms of data-capping. And yeah, it’s possible to PvP LOL.

Guessing those 2 are on ADSL speeds if only getting 1-2Mbps (or confused it with download speed). ADSL2+ plans should give around 3-5Mbps, provided you live close to the exchange. NBN’s (fibre to node/home) minimum is 10-12Mbps with optional extra for 100Mbps max. I’m on cable and I get 30Mbps speed (also have option extra to 100Mbps).

Latency Ping wise, you’ll have to connect to the NA servers. Depending on your ISP’s routing, you can get anywhere between 200-500ms. Personally I have to use a ping reducer to get stable 220-250ms. Connecting to EU should give be around 400-600ms before the use of ping reducers.

If it is because of a small player base, why is Malta able to join, their population is 424 721, Australia has over 20 million… We probably have more players than they have population

I believe it has something to do with Australia’s kitten laws and claiming prizes/assets from overseas. Since the prizes have monetary value, it might mean tax needed to be paid for them as it cannot be marked as gifts nor is it a purchase.

In retrospect, I highly doubt the prizes would be worth enough for there even tax considered. However it’s just A-net don’t want to deal with the complex laws thus taking the easy option of opting out Australians and other countries with similar laws from entering.

Also outside of the American countries, Australia should be one of GW2’s biggest market on their NA servers. Many Australians prefer western games in their choices, meaning it’s easier to cater towards than Asian countries like Korea/Philippines. It is a shame, many US companies neglect Oceanic players in that regard.

That makes sense… To be fair, not like we have many Australian game developers to buy from.

Australia has a pretty big GW2 community, i am in and have been part of atleast 5 different Australian based guilds, all of which had near maximum members.

Quoting myself:

It’s only open to the US, Canada and Europe (possibly the EU? Russia isn’t listed). So the entirety of Central and South America, Africa and Asia are excluded as well. Australia isn’t being singled out or anything.

Edit: Just to confirm, the European nations listed are the members of the EU. No more, no less.

You won’t be able to play on the EU servers. I get 360~450 ping on my SFR account and 230~290 ping on my Blackgate account.

PvP is fine on NA servers, but I found it a bit tough on the EU servers due to the much higher ping. Extremely hard to land a good static field when playing an ele with that kind of lag

Switzerland is the same, it’s not allowed by law, that’s why almost every other country in Europe is there, unless you’re Swiss.

As other people have said in this case it will be a legal thing. Either an issue with importing the prizes or simply with running the competition.

Personally I always feel sorry for people in Alaska and Hawaii. When I lived in the USA pretty much every competition I saw was “only open to residents of the 48 contiguous states”. And of course they’re excluded from most non-US ones too.
