It is impractical and dumb, plain and simple. If you happen to be pressing skill 1 manually (which people do a LOT), the shout would never go off even though it is set to auto-attack. The only time it can go off is if you briefly pause for a moment and not press any skills while in combat. THEN it works. So I ask: what is the point of having it set to auto-attack in the first place if you have to even think about it??

This happens with pretty much every skill. It’s annoying and useless because the only time a skill ever auto-casts is when I stop doing everything else, which means I might as well just leave autocast off.

I tend to agree that I would look askance at a player who had configured one of their shouts as auto attack. As tempting as it is to make sure “for great justice” gets cast on cooldown in the heat of combat. Although you never know when your fingers won’t be able to keep up in a mesmer “time warp” bubble.

However, ArenaNet did the UI design right, allowing the player to make that choice. A very wise application developer once told me that customers will always use a program or feature differently than how you expected when you were writing the code…and she is right.

I just set my mouse’s thumb button to hit both 1 and 7. Whenever I click it in to do a normal attack, I also use For Great Justice. The only thing that’s a bit of a pain is switching to another mouse profile when I hop on a different character.

Another useful one: a macro to very, very quickly double tap f1 on necros, for the fury after death shroud trait buff. Or autofiring surprise shot off your toolbelt as a rifle/static discharge engineer, similar to the warrior’s FGJ thing.

Meh, i think ANet should forgo the current auto-attack scheme and simply have a skill trigger if it comes out of recharge and the relevant key is held down. Would make life easier for transform heavy professions, races and grenade tossing engineers.
