Is it better to leave auto attacking on your number 1 skill for pve and pvp or is it more beneficial to turn it off?

Definitely leave it on. Other skills you activate will override it or you can just cancel the chain, and it’s mindless damage. Plus a lot of builds use autoattack as one of the main damage sources.

Ranger sword being a notable exception, leave it on.

In pvp if you are a projectile user and eating lots of reflect, you might choose to turn it off.

For the elementalists’ weapon conjures all the AA are turned off.
In wvw if I get into a golem I turn it on.

There are a few exceptions where moving your auto skill to a utility can be useful. Mostly in PvE. Otherwise I say keep it on 1.

I won’t stop because I can’t stop.

It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….

In some burst builds, You don’t want to be wasting your +x% damage modifiers on your auto attacks either, so in those situations, you would leave it off.

Those armadillos would be a lot cooler if they looked more like real armadillos. mmm armadillos
