Automatic map switch is a bad idea
Server switching in GW is catastrophically bad, usually to another server that is also about to switch. Really needs sorting out because it’s getting rather unplayable.
And yes, please go back to the GW1 districts system, the current system is rather embarrassing.
I haven’t yet been automatically switched, I have though been offered a new server because mine was empty 3 times in a few minutes.
I have also been on a map with an upcoming event and been offered a switch to another map. Second map the event was over and emptying…
I have also been offered the same ‘your map is empty’ offer when in a group of 60 people. Yes, they were all on the same map with me.
Switching back would cause as many if not more problems. The reason it was done was many of the maps were empty, really empty.
It also saves server space and hamster power. Do you know how fast those poor hamsters have to run to keep the server going? Do you?
What we need is the software improved so you don’t get offered to be moved to a map where the event you are waiting for is finished. More selective in when it offers, and to which map.
Not counting game crashes, it’s so rare for me to be automatically switched that I assume it’s some kind of bug/server error when/if it does happen.
I have been playing around in HoT maps more lately, and I haven’t been super impressed by the volunteer-switch system. Seems like the maps are often worse than the one I’m on, I lose my map participation, and there have been times when I switch, only to be told five minutes later than my new map is also closing. Get it together, volunteer system.
I’m not talking about right after a map meta finishes, either, when you expect populations to be changing rapidly.
this is rather embarrassing for anet, but going back to a gw1 district system is hardly a solution. no, actually its not a solution at all. i dont know what it is, but my brain seems at the very least allergic to such a response. i’ll force myself to think about it for a second and it seems it gets forced out of my conscious collective considerations.
one permanent instance of the map + a way to choose which shard you’re on is the solution.
GW1’s district system would actually be the pre-cursor to the megaserver. It worked the same way. Players fill one server then the system spawns another when the cap gets reached. Only there you had the choice of what server you’re on.

The problem is, it’s exploitable, just like guesting before the megaserver. They would have to either change how some things worked or lock you to an instance. The other problem is that it’ll allow you to estimate the game’s active population, which every MMO tries to hide.
Taxis already exploit the current megaserver system. /edit: What exactly is the exploit?
The system doesn’t work either. We get map events where you need people but they’re spread out across 5 different instances of the map. It would be easier for players to get people to do AB for instance if they all just lumped into “Auric Basin district 1”. If the district is full use a queue system to get into it.
Megaserver is districts without a clear way to choose one.
ps: i’ve had to taxi every time i want to meet with my friends in musician’s guild of tyria and if they’re not repping i almost never end up in the same divinity’s reach.
When did this start happening? I agree that this is a horrible idea. I was soloing a champion in Verdent Brink and fought a hard battle to bring it down to less than 5% only to be abruptly yanked into another instance right in the middle of the fight! So frustrating!

And why would it not be a solution? Perhaps you could elaborate on that, because you give zero reason why this would not be a reason, so I don’t think your opinion is based on anything.
Now, I suspect that to implement this in GW2 might not be so easy, so I am not expecting them to do this, but the GW1 system actually worked much better for me, because it opened instances as needed and you could select which one you wanted. You could even play together with people from other parts of the world. It just felt a lot more stable and solid than what they’ve done in GW2.
Locking this up to avoid further necroposting
