Autorun toggle irritation
Or you could just hold both mouse buttons down to run, put your finger over the toggle, let up on the mouse and tap the toggle for a microsecond hiccup in your motion.
If you want to turn off the autorun option, unbind it from any key.
If you want to turn off the autorun option, unbind it from any key.
Simple solution.

are you complaining that you stop for a split second to turn on autorun? because that’s your fault, you are messing up. I turn on autorun without stopping at ALL. just hold down w, press the auto run, then let go of w. it’s like…basic human functioning of pressing buttons. I’m concerned for you if you can’t do this.
@ Donari:
That is pretty hard considering you are in a fight clicking aiming your infiltrators arrows for example. Pressing R to run and expecting it to work would be a lot easier now wouldn’kitten

@ Nausiation:
I’m not messing up if I’m running with “W” and then click “R” to run. Because it is IMPOSSIBLE to know whether its on auto run or not from that point. Obviously you don’t exactly know what I’m talking about here…
Especially the way you respond to this thread you should be more concerned about your own disabilities.
By the way, it shouldn’t be hard to implement an option to turn the toggle version off.

Read the thread. Twice. There’s two ways to interpret what you wrote. 1) You don’t understand the mechanics of autorun 2) You don’t know how to use the the mechanics of autorun. Both are your problem and no one else.
Unbinding autorun is your answer. There doesn’t need to be a notification if you are using autorun or not. If you can’t remember if you are using it or not that is your personal mental limitations. So, yeah, after the 1st response to your OP, the thread needed to end.

The OP is only asking for a new keybind option to turn on auto-run, or a checkbox option to have the keybind for forward not turn auto-run off. (I think)
Currently, the only keybind option available does both functions of turning it on or off. During actions it may get complicated remembering if you’ve turned it on or off last.
2 other binds turn it off. Forward and Backward.
The situation where this can come up is the OP likely took over action from auto-run instinctively, and in the action hit W for forward. Then, they get their bearings to take off and their character stops, because they’re used to playing with auto-run on all the time. Or, maybe they hit their auto-run a couple times in combat and just don’t know if the last thing they hit was forward or auto-run.
There’s no reason to insult the OP for wanting a way to keybind their controls to what they’re used to.
Now imagine you are being chased while doing one of these things, and you are blinded by skill effects and fire balls around you. And you press autorun to run for your life. But your character is not moving.
I request an option to either turn the toggle off, or remove toggle all the way.
I never press autorun in these situations. I only use autorun when I have the time and no pressure at all. Anywhere else, when I’m near ledges, in a fight, running for my life, I use the normal run. That way, I’m 10000% sure I am running where and when I want.
this is how i think autorun works.
1. if u press autorun you will go in autorun mode (it doesne matter if you were moving or not moving while pressing autorun. letting the W key go will still have autorun on, untill you press W it again)
2. autorun will be active untill you press forward or backward key again (at this point autorun stops and you need to activate it again if you want it. also, direction keys will not turn autorun off)
Umm I have auto run set to my “W” key and never use the other way that I guess 99% of you people do (holding it down to move constantly). I see no issues with the auto run feature at all. I really don’t know why anyone would prefer to hold a key down nonstop tbh.
Actually I lied perhaps. I do notice sometimes that my char delays to run or seems to just stand there sometimes when I am for example running in wvw and am paralyzed. After the effect wears off my guy does not run straight away and sometimes I have to hit the run again. Happens when gathering sometimes too I think but I always just thought this was a “me” issue. At times I spam the run key to start running and of course it stops then starts and stops me again of course lol…

Well that indeed is one of the cases in which I die bescause my character just doesn’t move. Even tough I know the mechanics of running my character starts running after gathering or building. And sometimes he just stands there untill you press R. Now this is in a peacefull setting. When stunned for example in the middle of skill effects where you can’t see your character you automatically assume you are either stunned or immobilized.
This is my irritation. So I simply request an override autorun option. On which upon pressing your character WILL run 100% of the times.
Its an easy to implement option and it has absolutely nothing to do with understanding mechanics as some people claim here.
Bump
I still have irritations with this mechanic each and every day.
The tooltip says it all: “Your character will move forward automatically without holding the forward key”
It sais nothing about a toggle, which it is at this moment.
Give me at least one good reason for ANYONE on this planet to use “R” to stop moving!
Autorun wasn’t made to run from fights. It was made for traveling long distances. Autorunning in a fight is just….well…odd.
In a fight, you always want the most amount of control you can have. That lets autorun out.
Agree with OP, if I understand it correct. Autorun should activate as soon as you press that button and everytime you push is.
But why in the world do you auto-run from a battle? In this game it is good to have an irregular movement to avoid some attacks. … We all have our seperate playstyle, but I must admit I think it is pretty uniqe, no?

I think the OP is misunderstanding what some people are saying…
1.) Hold W to run.
2.) Press auto-run.
3.) Let go of W at the same time that you toggle auto-run.
4.) Surprise, you’re still running.
It’s really not that difficult if you time it right. And yes, I do this in WvW all the time, though frankly if you’re running for your life from a zerg, you really shouldn’t be worrying about auto-run.
I haven’t seen auto-run not implemented as a toggle, in any of the games I’ve ever tried. In all of those games, auto-run worked the same way. Use W or S while auto-running, the auto-run toggles off. I don’t see why it would/should be different here.

I never use normal running, only in special occasions. Why on earth would you want to press “w” all the time while you could be pressing more important buttons in a fight? And yes, you understand me correctly. It should ALWAYS activate, it would be like a break that doesn’t work as it should in a car.

This is stated nowere, and even more important. It is OPINION not FACT that you would not want to use autorun in a fight. As I stated above, you can see that statement as the sort of control I have in a fight. Even then, why would it be so hard to just put a toggle on it? Even more so, if you guys only use it to travel long distances. Why would you even care in the first place?

Did you really think I didn’t know that?
You are all missing the giant point being made here.
It doesn’t matter what you do in a fight, what matters is that autorun shouldn’t be a toggle and cause irritation with that. I only gave the fight examples as it was the best way to describe the circumstance of when the irritations arrise.
Why it should be different in this game? Well I gave quite some reasons didn’t I?
Now give me one good reason why they shouldn’t implement a simple tick box to make this into a toggle/non-toggle?
It wouldn’t hurt a single baby seal on this planet, and it will probably make a lot of players happy. A simple tick box instead of:
1.) Hold W to run.
2.) Press auto-run.
3.) Let go of W at the same time that you toggle auto-run.
4.) Surprise, you’re still running. (such surprise, wow much skill)
…i don’t get it. does it even make sense for autorun NOT to be a toggle?

At first it didn’t make sense that the world was round, whats the point you are trying to make.
Are you talking about when the char just stands there with one foot kinda lifted when you try to run?
I have that alot, never linked it to autorun though.

No I didn’t, thats another thing. I know what you are talking about tough.
I believe you can reproduce that by walking in small circles really fast: WASDWASD
At a certain point your character will be stuck with one foot lifted up in the air.
I am talking about how Autorun in a toggle. So if you are moving, you stop moving by pressing “R”.
In almost any case this is not what you want, as you naturally stop moving by pressing “S” (to walk back).
For example: if you fall off a cliff, and your character goes head first. Smacks into the ground. And you press “R” to make him move. Your character will actually stop moving. As you were already autorunning, while laying on the ground.
Personally I use my middle finger to press skill #2, so naturally I press “R” to run and #2 to do an attack for example. (to all the people wondering why I use autorun instead of “W”.

As I said before we all have our different playstyles so I won’t argue to why you use Auto-run instead of W but as you asked the question ‘Why would I use W all the time while I could be pressing more important buttons’. Well, W is probably the most used button on my keyboard but I (Notice I say I) wouldn’t be able to move how I desired with Auto-run enabled like that since I don’t run strait forward when I fight, I strafe, I back up, I run farward+strafe, I run in circles and stuff… So I would be totaly disoriented by using Auto-run as a feature in battle. I use auto-run when I am safe running from point A to B and feel like chatting or have to go turn the lights on or quick stuff like that

So now that you know that, can’t you just not hit R again after you fall and let it resume movement naturally (single the toggle is still on)? Or won’t it run anyway after the fall?
I understand how your preference is different from how it is built, and how it might actually hinder gameplay during very specific situations. But you seem to be in the minority and it’s really a minor issue, if it can be called an issue at all. I mean, some games won’t even give you the option. Is it not a possibility for you to just adapt? Just hit W or both mouse buttons once in a while.
Are you saying you accidentally hit R again to turn it off and/or forget if you are on auto-run currently then hit R thinking you weren’t and then you stop because it turns out you actually were on auto-run?
I mean, I auto-run pretty much all the time. Yes, I’ve had my character stop and have had to push R again. I’ve never been irritated by it though. We are talking about hitting R. That’s one key away from D, which is where my index finger usually is already (and where yours should be).
I’m gonna rate this issue 1/2 potato on my small potatoes scale.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….

autorun MODE ON/OFF switch is very intuitive
i get your point that its uncomfortable for you, and you want separate bindings for ON and OFF – that would be nice QoL improvement – it’s sad that its expressed as rant instead of as constructive suggestion
i personally use autorun only for running long distances (both for wvw and openworld), because in combat strafing is a must. as for chopping trees and falling, why would you click ‘R’ again, if you KNOW you are already in autorun mode
