Awkward Controls?
Having been away playing other games I have to say, the movement/controls in this game feel very off. I guess I got used to it playing this for a while, but they’re slow and cumbersome compared to other games. Just not feeling fluid to me. Maybe it’s just me?
Can you elaborate a bit? What feels clunky? The first thing you want to do is remap your movement keys to move forward/backward and strafe, and turn with your mouse. Maybe that will help.
I gotta ask, what game did you come from?
I came here from SWtOR and I found the controls so frustratingly different I stopped playing. After a few months of my friends telling me daily how much better the gameplay was I came back here for a second try.
Turns out it wasn’t the controls, it was just what I was or wasn’t used to.
I recently poked my head back in to SWtOR and the exact reverse of my problem happened.
Turning with your camera when standing still with right click should turn your body as it does while casting or moving instead of mimicking left mouse button camera controls when still. It makes life hard when immobilized for no reason.

Check your ping in the options dialog. Games that have realtime combat (such as GW2) require a low ping in the 50-250ms range. Higher than that and it starts to result in very sluggish responses and feels like you’re playing in tar.
I’m usually really sweet… but this an internet forum and you know how it has to be.

I have the opposite problem. I find other MMO’s horrendously clunky. Took me ages to adjust back to Lotro when I tried… The fuidity of the game is something I find attarctive here.
But, it’s all down to experiences/ I’ve probably suffered with clunky games for a long time
What is hard to understand about WASD, 0-9 and right clicking to manipulate your camera?

I find the WASDQE controls to work just fine.
The only awkward thing about the controls (imo) is that right click doesn’t turn your character unless you move it in some way. If you don’t, it just moves the camera. I’m used to it at this point, though, so it’s not even a big deal.

Maybe it’s the POV cam. It does feel a little off, but they just put it in so still a little rough. But, still a lot better than no POV cam at all, terribly needed for certain situations. For someone like me that has always switched cam modes, it’s not an issue.
But yeah, it feels a little slushy in POV, and aspect ratio isn’t quite polished; like no real peripheral stretching/lateral fish eye to make it look more human eye like, rather its like looking say though a flat box. I think on wide screen it is more noticeable (passively), so then moving looks a little odd, a little less natural compared to RL vision. This way when you move, the corners of the screens seem to move faster, giving you a better sense of velocity, and a stronger feeling of peripheral vision.

I came from SWTOR, but I played Guild Wars exclusively once I came into the game. The controls didn’t strike me as off then. I started playing Tera for a while and currently play Vindictus, neither of which have tab targeting, so I’ve gotten use to faster response and what to me feels like more intuitive camera rotation. I asked in game and some players agreed about the controls feeling strangely, some said they were fine but their friends coming from other games thought they were odd.
I understand that it’s not really paramount once you have your target chosen. You can whirlwind through a boss and charge right back at him without issue no matter where you’re looking. Just feels off to me though.

Hmm, I guess there’s a different feel for different people. Personally, I thought GW2 had some of the best, most intuitive controls/mechanics in any MMO I’ve played when I first started and I still feel that way today.
When I tried Rift, for example, I thought the controls mechanics were incredibly awkward, stiff, and cumbersome, but I know lots of people were fine with them.
It took a while for me to get used to the WASD controls as well, I expected point-and-click movement as with most MMOs.
Wasn’t difficult to master (as you will find) but it can be a pain for melee characters, gotta manually position yourself in front your targets rather than simply clicking for auto attack.
Clunkiness depends a lot on your class and race. Norn and Charr seem to move like they’ve got lead in the shoes, and the classes that don’t get +25% movement speed passive suffer a bit as well.
Depends what games you played before … It took me at least 2 weeks learn the controls to
I tend to get vertigo if the images on the screen rotate or change too quickly. Fwiw, I don’t have this problem in GW2, but did have it in Tera, but only while playing a Warrior zoomed in close. Ergo, I think turning is a bit more responsive in Tera than in GW2. That said, I popped into Rift a while ago, and everything movement-oriented seemed slow, clunky and awkward.
Hah, I will say nothing can touch the original Resident Evil for cumbersome during battle. Unrelated, but man, those were some bad controls.

Most MMOs? That certainly is not true for the MMORPG segment, what major games are played by point and click? If that is an option beside “wasd”, you are conditioning yourself for a very hard time. Point and click is completely inferior in all MMORPG I know (where it even exists), mainly because you give up quick and precise mouse turn/look. That is especially noticeable in pvp, but also a hindrance in becoming a good pve-player. Probably as bad as “skill clicking”.

I play MMOs for years but never was a shooter player and for me games like Tera
and Vinductus are just plain unplayable. I simply hate it when the camera shakes
everytime i move my mouse just little bit. Also starting to hack with my weapons
when clicking a key is just horrible for me. And even worse if every attack also
drags you some steps forward.
The only Point & Click MMO i remember was the very first i played : Lineage 2.
After that i played EQ2 and every other MMO i played so far had WASD movement.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

Off the top of my head….Neverwinter, Age of Conan, DDO and LotRO. There is WASD movement, but also an option for simple point and clicking as well.

Can’t remember they had point and click. WASD still was the main movement style
and i think, you could click maybe both buttons to run like you can also in GW2.

It’s because of GW2 I almost cannot play other games. The movement of this game is pretty good.

WASD is still the primary (and superior) method of movement in those, though. That being said, Mabinogi was all mouse movement and did it quIte well, and Flyff had both but mouse movement was much better.

DDO and LOTR have point & click movement??? The only thing I am aware of is clicking some NPC or other interactive environment and your character moves there. In DDO, combat certainly does not work in any way reasonably like that. Not sure about LOTR.
The one thing I miss is a right click → Follow that other games I’ve played had. I hate holding up my friends if I need to brb shortly for a drink when I could potentially just follow their character.

That’s a part of it for sure.
But, full disclosure…I am getting a bit ‘long in the tooth’ and probably confusing my memories of different games. Neverwinter definitely has a point and click component though.
For me controls are almost perfect and every other mmo feels like total kitten. Only problem is that some classes can’t use skills fast enough. Sometimes in hectic battle you push buttons too fast and you will miss some skills.

I play with 900 ping all the time and the gameplay still feels fast paced to me. /shrug
Can Engi please have more than one viable skill set in PVE? Turrets maybe?
Ping definitely isn’t the issue. I get around 35-50ms in pretty much every game that I play. I’m just referring to how the controls feel as a whole.
I am using a different mouse (Razar naga) with allot of buttons..
Without this mouse i am really bad :-P cant walk and press buttons at once so thats why i bought this expensive mouse
I think a lot of it is simply what you’re used to.
For example I’m currently going between GW2, Elder Scrolls Online and Dragon Age: Inquisition and I use fairly similar keybinds in all 3. Whenever I switch games, and especially if I’ve been playing one more than the others for a bit, there’s always things that I miss from the other games, and things that confuse me because I forget that it’s different in the game I’m playing.
Some things are obvious, like after playing Dragon Age I really miss the ability to pause in combat and save my game. Others are more subtle and I find it hard to decide which I prefer, like ESO defaulting to mouse-look while GW2 defaults to having the cursor on screen and DA:I (relatively recently) added a toggle that makes it easier to switch between the two than in either MMO. That’s when I find myself thinking I prefer whichever system I’ve been playing with most recently and struggling to adjust to the others, but I know if I spent more time in one game I’ll get used to that version again.

O_o?
Turning is instant in GW2, can’t see how it can be more responsive unless you are using keyboard turning in which case …. yeah not that great.
Movement and camera controls feel very similar to other MMOs I’ve played, minus those mouse=camera ones like Neverwinter, TERA.

I use mouse turn. Perhaps I should replace “responsive” with “loose?” Maybe it’s a screen wobble issue in Tera which does not happen to me in GW2. Maybe it’s not the controls, maybe it’s some issue in how the games render rapid scene shifts. However, it seems that its due to rapid turning. I just know that I had issues in both Tera and in ES:Ob and don’t in GW2.

Sounds like a mouse sensitivity issue.
