I’ve played GUILD WARS 2 for quite awhile and noticed many things are “bound” in

some way, Soul bound, Account bound etc. and honestly I can understand the need

for some things to be bound. I have also noticed that the number of “bound” items

(I’m using this as a term for most in-game objects, equipment, etc.) is rather high. I’m

not saying there needs to be some big change or anything and I know bound things are

important for balance and other various reasons and that a lot goes into making a

game, but for things like Crafted items materials and such…… why bound them?

Crafting professions take time and gold to level to 400 and even more so to master to

500, I’ve personally mastered two to 500; Leather working and Weapon smithing and

do not really want to spend time and ALOT of gold to level more, ESPECIALLY to 500.

This brings me to my Main Thesis, Why bound crafted materials, weapons, or

items in general? Part of the fun of games for many people (_as someone who has

played many games and taken a certificate course in Game development_) is being

able to craft things and sell them or trade them. This holds true even more so if it’s a

high rarity item that requires much work, coin and materials to even be able to craft

in the first place. In fact Being able to find someone in game and get them to craft

things for you is an amazing thing, and should be encouraged in this game!

Honestly I’m surprised that in GUILD WARS 2, a game that prides itself on "playing

how you want" and more importantly companionship and teamwork, would NOT

allow this. Now I’m not going to list these points, without also stating a viable solution,

which is why after this long speech (_thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts

and opposures_) I would suggest “GUILD BOUND” as a type of binding. not only would

this allow everything I talked about prior, but it would also increase the usefulness of

actually being in a guild as well. PLEASE JOIN IN with thought’s and discussions on things

you might think could help this wonderful game grow!*

My only annoyance with bound items are when it comes to weapon drops. You’ll be running around Orr & receive a level 35 account bound weapon. Only option is to destroy the item if you do not have any low level alt. Either stop placing these low level items in level 80 zone or get rid of them.

An interesting point, but my biggest complaint is in account binding the ax, sickle and pick tools to an account. Many is the time that I have wanted to offer a colleague or a passer-by one of these items and not been able too as they are account bound. Personally, I’m of the opinion that such items should be freely exchangeable between players only if they are unused.

Legendary and Ascended mats or items need to be bounded , but I don’t see
a point to bound anything else other than those items.

PS: Most games become P2W if you don’t bind the bis items.

not too many, in fact, there are more unbound items than bound one. Bound crafting materials usually for high end tier craft only (legendary, ascended, or unique exotic), as for low level bound equip, most of them drop from personal story or quest rewards. For crafting, that is the way this game limit the speed to complete your crafting progress (HELLO PEOPLE OF LION’S ARCH; I JUST COMPLETE MY MEGA EPIC LEGENDARY AFTER GRUESOME 15 MINUTES HARD WORK). Most basic crafting materials are not bound, i can’t event name one basic material that is bound (please don’t name craft material that required for ascended/legendary or end game equip).

edit:
after a bit of pondering, i think i have found the issue with your problem. I believe what OP regards as bound items, are what he bought off NPC (with karma or gold). Those items are bound/un-salvage-able, to limit the availability of materials from NPC, so the market run with LESS dependency of NPC, not “without”, but “with less”. Of course there are also item from NPC that required in high tier crafting but account bound (like Obsidian Shard), you won’t need that for basic crafting, and items like that are the so called “time-gating” (or karma-gating in this case).

My only annoyance with bound items are when it comes to weapon drops. You’ll be running around Orr & receive a level 35 account bound weapon. Only option is to destroy the item if you do not have any low level alt. Either stop placing these low level items in level 80 zone or get rid of them.

Are you sure this ever happen? and in Orr at that? I never get 35 drop from such high level map (and high level character), probably with the exception of personal story rewards. This only happen when my 80 toon running around queensdale or slaying lv 5 mob (which drop ~lv 5 items and/or bags with lv 5 to lv 80 items inside).

^ You can definitely get the newer lower level rares from 80 only zones. I have received several from Silverwastes. The ones that you have to pick between two stats.

The only really issue I have with account bout items are ascended. Get what’s supposed to one of the best drops in the game, and you might have no use for it and nothing you can do with it but merch it for next to nothing, but that also has to do with not being able to forge or salvage it as well.

Personally my problem with bound crafting materials for Legendary, Ascended, etc. Is

that some things can only be made by certain professions, and If you don’t have that

profession then you are out of luck, the same goes for crafting ascended weapons. Say

I want an ascended pistol for instance, but don’t have huntsman, so there is no way for

me to get one aside from luck in drops (If you can even Get one) and getting the

stats you want, well good luck with that…… other than that I would have to spend time

and much gold on leveling that profession to 500 just to be able to craft it……. What

If they implemented a system that let someone craft it for you? Let me explain what I

mean, Instead of trading the materials or whatever to the player (and for bound things

you can’t) there could be a menu in the station where you go to the crafting station,

and maybe click a “craft for commission” button/tab or something this could bring up

a screen where you can “invite” another player to, and they put in all the materials

for whatever it is they want crafted for them and a gold for the commission. the

person crafting would not be able to interact with any materials put into this area and

when all the materials are put in then the invited player could click some button like

“Get Commissioned” or whatever and would be in the player who commissioned it’s

inventory (like normal crafting would). Then after the item is crafted, the player who

had the crafting skill would get one gold for the commission from the player for their

help. I think being able to work with Other crafters would help the community and

also Attract More Players to the game!

I can confirm this does happen, the new low-level consumable items that let you pick one of two or three stat options are dropping in high level zones. I’ve picked up five so far, one level 15 and the rest level 35, all of which were either in Orr or the Silverwastes.

Yes. Level 36 in fact, 55 & 60 items from Orr. See screenshot.

Just for good measure; today a level 3 account bound item dropped in Cursed Shore.

Actually I was referring to bound items in general, but mostly crafted bound items.

My reasoning against things players craft being bound is that they worked hard to get the materials to craft something (or spent alot of gold in most cases) so they should be able to share/sell everything they craft.

Another thing I strongly believe in is that players should be able to craft ANYTHING they are able to craft for themselves for another player IF they wish to do so, that is something in a lot of MMO’s that I’ve played that are a part of what make them so fun and attract players who would play for crafting and stuff.

one example would be someone I know who doesn’t really play much, they tell me all the time that they only really play to craft and to help craft for others. but seeing as how the crafting is so restrictive they are very limited in this regard.

If the crafting was more free and players were able to share more things in game (crafted and not) It would attract more players who it doesn’t currently.

Sharing stuff is fun and good! Don’t limit us in this! saying unbinding things would mess up the TP or what not is not true (yeah maybe for some things formerly bound for a small time) but it would quickly fix it self quickly, it’s constantly changing and would be fine.

While thinking it over, using my former idea of the assist crafting menu (i’ll call it that for now) nothing would need to be unbound, It could craft the things into the other players inventory as if they were crafting it themselves (which they would be sort of) this would remove any problems associated with unbounding things.

I like this idea. I would like to add this to it however:

Have another window where the crafter can add items as well. This would allow a person that needs something to get it faster (since 2 people will be working on it together)

for example, say you are working on crafting a Vision Crystal. This requires an Augur Stone and 5 bloodstone bricks, empyreal stars, and dragonite ingots. Say the person commisioning adds the augur stone, 5 bloodstone bricks, and 5 empyreal stars. The crafter could add 5 dragonite ingots to finish it out and craft it. (the commission could account for this although the rate would have to be fair to both parties). neither should be able to take the others mats

This could really help with guilds. perhaps the commissioner only does wvw and the crafter does world bosses (as seen in the example above)?

I agree on the bound items. Way too many of them, especially at lower levels. Imo, the only items that should be account or soul bound should be level 80 and above.

Some very good ideas, imo. And fwiw, yea, I got several crafters.

thank you!

and I believe the more ideas everyone puts forwards, the more the game can grow! and honestly I do not agree with the fact that you have to level a CP (crafting profession)
to 400-500 to get the high lvl/tier stuff, and there’s no other way to get it, I have 3 at 500 and do not wish to level others just for the things that are bound….. which makes me think….. what does everyone think about some kind of dual crafting, in the sense that, 2 professions come together to make something special otherwise unobtainable?
